What makes you think we'll know what exactly went down in a few days? I'm guessing we probably never truly find out unless stuckey is the one that states it.

It may be as simple as freeman put the offensive staff on notice that they MUST be better. Freeman believes in Parker and Parker believes the WR room/development is what held them back. So Freeman is moving on. If I was stuckey i'd be pissed as well unless I was part of the issue around no PA, our awful wr concepts, etc.

Freeman literally said he was hopeful to have everyone back. That is definitely leaving the door open to changes.

I'll say this, there's a time to let the players run the coaches and a time not to. But we don't have a single WR worth bucking a good coach for on this roster, let alone in the transfer era where you can quickly fill spots.

So there has to be something more to this than player upheaval against Stuckey.

I get the impression that because of what Freeman said on Monday, several people on this board and throughout the ND fan base immediately assumed this entire staff would going to return for next season. He didn't speak in complete absolutes compared to some others in the past.

Regardless of whatever he said, how could anyone automatically set their minds to the idea that none of these assistants were going to be gone. What about this profession do people not understand? The very next day an assistant was off the books and while it was surprising, it should not be in anyway shocking nor should it call into question whatever was said the day before.

I have no clue why Stuckey was let go, but my first thought upon hearing the news was that it was probably because it was obvious to Freeman that he was not "on board" with having Parker come back as OC.

As a head coach, you just can't have division within your coaching ranks. Every coach has to buy in. MF may have made a bad choice in retaining Parker as OC. But once that decision is made, you have to move on from coaches that don't buy in (at least outwardly).

In regards to Freeman's "hopeful" comment. I get that it may have been an attempt at providing a "non-answer". If that was the case, it wasn't a good choice. You simply can't say that and then the very next day, fire a coach. Just a bad look.

I'm all for firing guys, and letting guys walk to develope the next Samardzija, Tate, Floyd, or Fuller. It's been way to long since ND had a game changer at QB and WR. I have a sense it's coming. Can you imagine what SH could have done with a Tate and Fuller on this team. Estime would have put up Ricky William numbers.

EDIT...Forgot Porker would have been calling plays. Oh no, we suck again.

Is passing game coordinator, if not the OC, just a title to throw some more money at a coach or are they actually doing more than a typical receiver coach? Serious question about what the additional duties are. I'd assume the receiver coach is inherently coordinating the pass game to some degree.

Oh I agree with you. It's sub-pumping season with the carousel, transfer portal, and ESD coming up. But there are a lot of things that point to Shephard as an interested candidate other than just Loy guessing.

It looks like Freeman is going to succeed or fail with "his guys". Rees, Harry, and Stuckey are now all gone and will have been replaced by guys that Freeman is all in on. Am I optimistic? Not really, but Freeman is the HC and he needs to be able to do it his way. All we can do is hope it ends up being the right path for the program.

Loy also says Gilbert has not gotten back to anyone on if this effects him.

Obviously I hope Micah comes on board as planned, but it's kind of shortsighted of him and his family to make a decision like this based on a position coach. There aren't many position coaches who stay at the same job for 4+ years

I remember the narrative being that Freeman chose Stuckey over Shephard- is that accurate? If so, I'm surprised Shephard would have interest again. He must really want to be at ND

He's had a great season. He probably has lots of schools in his ear right now.

I was going to post something very similar. The timing of this points to an element outside of "performance review at the end of the season".

The only possible explanations I can come up with:

  • Interpersonal conflict: this could be between Stuckey and offensive staff, Stuckey and Freeman, Stuckey and players or who knows?
  • Dereliction of duties: unwilling to do things as Freeman or the offense wants. This is really hard to believe but I guess it's possible.
  • Character issues: this is the most unlikely, Brady Quinn has gone to bat for him as have others. I feel kind of back for Stuckey.
It can't be recruiting related, he has two - greatly improved classes between 2023 and 2024.

Part of me wants to feel encouraged that Freeman is a strong leader and willing to make a difficult decision when it needs to be made and part of me is fearful that we're beginning to see some fault lines in his approach. And the only real way to judge these moves is see how the offseason, and ultimately, 2024 plays out.

Got it backwards it was freeman who wanted Shephard, Shep wanted to have input on the offense, but tommy didn't want another voice in decision making so him and the TE coach heavily influenced the Stuckey Hire.
