One of NDs assistants interviewed for a head coaching job today? Blue and gold is reporting
Gotta be Elston, right?
EDIT: Chip Long to Troy is a good call. I am chastened.

It's not a coordinator, so it's not Chip.
Hope it's him and not ElstonNo info, but I'll guess it's Chip Long for the Troy job. He's from Alabama originally.
It's Denson with Charleston Southern.

If Denson goes, I say full court press on Alford.
Getting him back would be freaking incredible.

Good for Autry, he seems like a genuinely good guy. On the other hand, I wonder why Mike Elston never gets more of a look from other teams? He's coached since 2001, has coached, LB, DL, ST, TE, recruiting coordinator at multiple schools. Even coaching multiple position groups just since being at ND. Kelly has even mentioned him in press conferences saying he has all it takes to be a head coach. I could be wrong but off the top of my head I think he might even be our Associate head coach, and Kelly has talked about letting him sit in on important decision making, kind of like high end on the job training.
Maybe in the few interviews he has had a chance at he might not of done well? Anybody else find it odd? Am I missing something obvious?
I've wondered that myself. As much as Kelly talks Elston up it seems like he would have gotten a shot already.
I get why people become head coaches and such. Money, belief they can make it, etc., but I often think to myself, "is the risk worth it?" I wonder if that is a deciding factor for guys like Foster, Venables, maybe even Elston. I know I have a good job, get paid well, I do my job well, why throw that out?
I think what was said above me is true to, "do I really want to be head coach there?" Is the risk worth the reward, I'd say often times no. After those three failed years (or so) you end up having to go way backwards to stay in the industry (Molnar).
Another factor is family. Does Elston have any children? People with families like the stability of a well-paying job and being able to stay in one geographic location for a spouse, who may have a job of her own, and children, who have established friendships and a connection to a local school.
Moving repeatedly can be hard on children, especially teenagers, who are forced to make new friends in a strange place. Elston is likely paid well as one of Kelly's top assistants. He has job security. His family can stay in one place and plant some roots. He will more than likely be given, at minimum, a chance to interview for the ND job if Kelly should decide to leave. He may be content with that for now. He's living the dream. Why risk all that for a shot at a lower-level head coaching job?
From everything I've read and heard, Mike Elston and his wife Beth are firmly entrenched in the South Bend community and they have 3 daughters as well. By normal American standards, and especially the living costs of South Bend, Indiana, Mike Elston is a very rich man and makes a rich man's salary. He, from what I know and understand, has a great relationship with Brian Kelly who has a mutual respect and admiration for what Mike Elston does. Yes, he works his tail off and recruits with the absolute best in the business, but he's got as good of a setup as you can have as an assistant coach at a premier program in the country. I do think that Mike Elston, like most another assistant coaches, want to run their own program some day, but he probably knows that if BK retires he can get a MAC job where he'll make equal or lesser pay than he does now. So, he always has the MAC option down the road and I don't think he'd leave unless its for a Power 5 job. Now, if a power 5 school came along and offered him a head job then I'd guess he'd probably take it, but I don't think Mike Elston leaves until BK retires/got fired (he'd probably get an interview for the head job at ND), a Power 5 school offers him a head gig, or he gets a big time coordinator job down the road. If I'm making close $1M a year and I like my boss and have job security, then I'm probably not jumping at the first opportunity at age 44 when I have a lot of time left in the coaching industry.
His girls range in age from roughly 7 to 12. They've been in South Bend since 2010. South Bend is likely the only home that any of those kids can remember.
when sanford left for WKU it was such a head scratcher for me. he would have been set up nicely with his young family for a number of years but now they will be on their third home in what, 4 years?
Did y'all know that Matt Rhule apparently interviewed with the Jets?

People must really love Rhule more than most of us.
He was on the extremely short list for replacing BK after '16 lol
