Freeman said it as much in post game press conference… If the issues are fits and mental mistakes it is coaching
Do you think MF is going to say that some players learn better than others? A good manager (or coach) is going to accept responsibility. Marist, Kiser and Bertrand most likely receive similar coaching but that doesn’t mean they will all be equally good at the same things, including mental processing. If you don’t think Bertrand is missed when he isn’t in the game then no worries, we can agree to disagree.

I know the first part of the schedule is soft, and as fans we always want better, but the reality is that every team allows some yards and has missed assignments during the course of a game.

That being said, they are allowing less than 210 yds and less than 12 pts per game. They have limited the big plays and made teams sustain drives. Communication has been good on the backend, and even some of the bigger plays they have allowed have been against really tight coverage where the opponent just made a play. We are not going to stuff every run and rack up 6 sacks a game,l. That being said we are top 15 in the country in pressure rate and a combination of good coverage and QB pressure has been very disruptive for our opponents.
The defense has been plenty good and should continue to get better.
One thing the entire team needs to do immediately though is cut down on the penalties.

That game was as boring (outside the two long throws) as the crowd today.

The front seven concerns me with theor lack of pressures against a backup QB, and the big holes they were giving up.

Yes Colzie played... when a bunch of walk ons came in.

I really didn't like the ankle twisting and knee twisting by the CMU defenders. It was bush league and appeared intentional in trying to hurt players.

Even in the first half, I went back and watched the second quarter at 10 minutes of game time left. Hartman rolled right and threw the ball away but the defender came in and twisted his leg in the same way that hurt Hartman later in the game.

This came a few plays after the same thing happened to Jadarian Price.

The defensive line is going to be an issue this season. We have no stars there right now. They are all just 'ok'. We clearly need a better pass rush, and our DTs get pushed around in the run game more than they should have against inferior opponents.

The RG is a problem. I have to think we have to have better long-term options there, but perhaps not with enough experience to replace our starter for another year. The TEs seems to be a work in progress (overall in a good way). Obviously Staes is a keeper, but the other guys appear somewhat limited passing options at the moment.

Our LB core is in transition. Liufau is good, the rest are 'meh'. We need better athleticism there. Can't wait for next year.

Hartman is really solid, but does hold the ball too long and will miss easy throws at times. Not sure if he has the arm for the NFL, but for college he is the perfect ND QB. I wish we had him for 4 years.

Estime is a beast, but we need to play the other RBs more as others have already said.

Our WRs are having a breakout party. Merriweather should have answered questions and quieted the board mini-meltdown over whether he can actually play. Flores will be productive for 4 years, and we have serious depth there. My biggest worry is next year whether Angeli can get the ball to them consistently, but when Minchey and CJ start I think we will have a very good passing game also with the younger TEs on the roster. This offense is going to be scary good in 2-3 years.

I am not sure we are at the level of OSU with current starters, across the board. I like our younger players better, and think we are serious NC contenders in 2 years. If we win this next game, it will be because of our young offensive skill players matching up well with their defensive talent. If we lose, it will be because the defensive front 7 simply wasn't good enough to contain them.

I need to see the Monday freeman PC that Hartman is completely fine. We don’t have much chance this year without him.

Did Colzie play today he’s been non existent the last two weeks
He was celebrating in the end zone on Tyree's touchdown. So, yes, he played. But that was the only time I noticed him. He seems to have been jumped by Flores. At this point he's basically our sixth receiver.

I was just looking at the stats, btw. We have 11 guys (WRs/TEs/RBs) with at least three catches on the season but no one with more than eight. That's wild. Between the diversity of our passing game and our RBs, I will be curious to see how the better teams on our schedule try to defend us. You can't take away everything.

I expected the play to be off somewhat for this weekend, especially with what's coming into town next w/e! One thing that I didn't anticipate was the inept officiating, especially playing at home! DAMN, they were fuckin' terrible. Oh well, water under the bridge. Now, bring on tO$U!

Still not playing at the level I'd hoped for however, they haven't played their best game. Saving it for next week 🤞
IMO, they had one eye on Sunday and getting ready for OSU as evidenced by the penalties and inconsistent play in the first half. Eliminate the penalties and CMU probably doesn’t score.

I will be surprised if our overall play isn’t ratcheted up a notch or two against OSU.

Positives
- Watching Sam Hartman play has been a highlight of my fandom.
- WR’s are peaking. We continue to see very good development of the whole group. It comes at a good and much needed time.
- Staes is really something as a pass catcher.
- Thomas Harper is a top 5 player for me. Love that guy. If ND beats OSU, I’ll say he comes up with a big play or two.
- We should get Rubio back for next week which should help.
- Freeman testing out Spencer Shrader could also be a difference in a win or loss next week. Kids got the leg.

Negatives.
- I’m not going to be overly negative about the game but I will say that I don’t believe we’re seeing the type of development I’d expect out of the front 7. If the response is, these guys just aren’t very good to begin with. Well, that doesn’t really answer why some are playing worse than they did two years ago. Or, if these guys really are that bad, why can’t we develop the young talent behind them. Just doesn’t seem like the production line is working like it used too.
Maybe this is just me hoping but when it comes to the defense, their schemes appear to have been just as vanilla as the offensive schemes. Maybe deliberate? Maybe it takes a little time when you have turnover? Kind of like to hear from Reaper, his thoughts.

My hope is they can actually get to McCord. ND secondary vs OSU WRs is going to be fun to watch..or the death of me.

I'd say more 50/50

It would be nice if the front 7 can help them out and pressure the QB. They can’t cover those guys all day.

They showed a stat during the game yesterday that although sacks are down, we are 14th in the country in pressure rate. Pressure is not an issue, actually getting the QB on the ground while he still has the ball in his hand is.

FWIW, every quarterback we’ve played has been pretty athletic (though most QBs are nowadays) and - as discussed last week - they seem to focus more on containing than penetrating the pocket to make a sack.

But, yeah, it’s be nice for someone to just blow up a block now and then and create some havoc. The only DL who has really impressed me thus far is JJB. Hopefully he has an extra chip on his shoulder on Saturday.

Howard Cross was good for the 1st 3 games. Have not rewatched yet, but I didn't see him much yesterday. That does not factor in the Peacock issue though. I missed a few touchdowns along the way.

Regardless of the opponents, I am admiring second half adjustments by Parker and Golden so far this year.

Now comes the real deal.

Our diversity is awesome, but part of the reason why 8 is the most catches is due to us not having a stud wr.

Willing to give the defense a bit of a break considering their performance weeks 1-3. At the end of the day, CMU averaged only 4.9 yards per play.

The term pressure might be generous in this instance.

Kiser flying through the air with his feet over his head after being cut in half at the line of scrimmage isn’t a pressure IMHO.

Look, they gave up 17 points to a MAC school, and it did not look pretty defensively, but these stats say they held up pretty damn well. CMU was just super efficient on their scoring drives, I felt like their OC called one hell of a game.

Tobias getting a big TD and some confidence going into OSU is huge. Excited to see him grow as a player

Some want to talk big boy football. Your standards are insultingly low, you're just happy a ball is snapped. You're the same person last year who pooped a little each time someone criticized Rees.

Find a sunshine thread where no one is ever critical. Some want to talk real ND football

I think that the penalties that extended drives for CMU were a big factor in allowing them to score 17 points in the game. I’d hazard a guess that if those penalties were removed, at least one (if not two) of those scoring drives would have stalled. Hope they can be cleaned up this weekend.
