Were they 110 in D last year with 5 now NFL roster guys? I mean the track record with BVG is much different than that of their DC. Just sayin
Plus their tops CBs knee exploded.

VanGorder’s speed package at Texas was the defensive equivalent of when Charlie Weis tried to install the read option for Georgia Tech nine years ago--sampson

Please don't take that as me being in favor of BVG being our DC after this season(unless something changes). I don't think we should fire him today though.
Well, if we are using injuries as an excuses for bad defense...

ND has lost 9 times since 2014. 7 of those losses we scored 27+ points.
*I stole this from someone on Twitter.
It's just crazy to me how the offense was always "meh" when we had Diaco, Te'o, Tuitt, Smithx2, and other game wreckers on D... now the offense is awesome and we have swiss cheese back there.
We had Crist/Rees, Rees, Golson, Rees, Golson for five consecutive years... now we have an NFL talent at QB and we can't even tackle? What gives?
You put Kizer on the 2011 and 2013 teams an each wins the NC.

Bo Pelini would be a very interesting hire. I'd be all for it. He'd need a Xanax or two forced into his daily diet though.
The days where you should win with 24 points are gone. 35 is the new normal for a good offense.
Does anyone think Pelini is a legitimate option? It'd be nice to see Kelly go outside of his circle and find a homerun.
So bad was our defense that 35, in fact, would not have been enough to beat Texas on Sunday night.
I'll repost the chart I made yesterday:
![]()
As you can see, our defense has been much worse than several comparable programs in terms of PPG ranking during the BVG tenure. This is not readily explained by poor defensive recruiting; we were in the middle of the pack among top programs from 2012-2014.

The problem with that blanket chart is that it doesn't tell the full story. Count the quantity of defensive players Clemson/Stanford/whoever have... not just quality. Our issue is gaping holes left by not having enough experienced depth and developed players. Until the 2015 class, we simply didn't even sign enough bodies so if any of those "highly rated" players gets hurt or is a bust there is no contingency plan. It's also why the wheels fall off every year when/if injuries occur to key players.
6 Safeties rated at an 89 is better than 1 Safety rated at a 95 if your goal is to get productive and consistent play.
Assuming BVG doesn't turn it around (which he could, because Stanford, MSU, etc. play offenses he knows how to defend) and gets fired...
I hope, in order, Kelly looks at:
1. Derek Mason, if fired. Perfect fit.
2. Bo Pelini, if he'd be interested (doubtful).
3. Kwiatkowski from Washington, but he probably wouldn't want to leave, not even if we offered $2 million a year.
4. Either of MSU's co-DCs... probably would have an easier time pulling Tressel of the two.
5. Todd Grantham... I have no idea how a place like Louisville has a DC of his caliber, but we are paying BVG more to coach here with no results. Grantham would also be a tough pull because of his contract.
Those are the 5 names I can come up with that I'm absolutely positive could rebuild the defense with a couple years of recruiting to fix depth and installing their systems. I think it's going to be very hard to get anyone to come here though with our lack of talent unless we offer $1.5/year with multiple guaranteed years.
To answer the main question "When will VanGorder be fired" I think he will be fired if/when we lose our 3rd game. At that point who cares what happens to finish the season. And if he lets Nevada hang a ton of points on them and that game is close or Nevada steals one.....he will be done that Sunday morning. I just can't see them keeping him after that. If ND finishes 10-2, or 9-3 with that 3rd loss being against USC....I think he will be back next year.
Kelly was more critical on Kizer than he was on BVG in the presser....wtf?
