Hahaha
Hahaha
We had our issues but only 2 things REALLY scare me against FSU
1. How do we stop JW from running right up the middle of our defense?
2. EG Turnovers/Holding ball forever!
Six and mutha fuggin OH !!! Take the win and move on...
Ya'll let your highs get too high and your lows get too low.
ND loses this type of game in the past. Post-Stanford, sluggish start, start the game down 14-0... And you still get a win, and your extremely young defense PLAYING THEIR SIXTH GAME under a new d-coordinator is still lining up and playing aggressive, despite tempo they hadn't seen before, and they still made enough plays late when UNC had chances to get ahead.
One bad game doesn't justify the general testiness on this board lol.
I think the answer to #1 is: Don't.
How does JW compare to Williams from a speed standpoint?
Just watched the replay. No, defense did not play well. And the most glaring scheme weakness is that it's very hard to cue up exotic blitzes when the opponent is running tempo like that. This will be relevant for ASU, and might be relevant for Louisville and USC. I can't really see the other teams running tons of tempo when it's not their normal style. And it also raises a concern of whether uber aggressive defense works if the skill position players are good enough to routinely win their one on one matchups.
While the defense gave up a ton of yards, at the point where we scored 50 UNC had only earned about 20 points worth from their offense... about 2 TDs and 2 FGs if you give them credit for their miss. I find it hard to blame the defense for scores that were gift wrapped by offensive mistakes.
And there are only two offenses left that are better than UNC.
JW is not nearly as fast or elusive.
He is, however, a much better passer. He scrambles to buy time and to draw coverage to himself, then hits the receiver.
Apples and oranges.
Think Andrew Luck, unfortunately.
My primary concern is the shortage of healthy bodies. Collinsworth started because the other safeties are still having communication issues according to Kelly in the post game PC. Collinsworth is to have an MRI on his shoulder. I doubt he's back by Saturday. Riggs went down with an ankle. He returned later in the game. Will he be 100%. Barratti's gone as are others.
In his post game presser, Kelly said that Collinsworth dislocated his shoulder, and they would be sending him for an MRI, to see where they are at. I'm not all that up on the science of sports injury, but Kelly made it sound like he might not even miss any time. Kelly also gave a "pffft", when asked about Riggs. He seemed pretty confident that Riggs was just fine.

I watched the PC and heard what Kelly said. As I said in the previous post, "I doubt he's back by Saturday." I hope I'm wrong. Kelly has seen the MRI either.
He has 23 carries for 39 yards on the season. That should tell you what JW thinks about running. Williams has 75 for 375 for comparison sake.
As others have pointed out, he will scramble and look through his progressions before he takes off. Our defense will be able to handle that better then the running QB that Williams is.
Williams has passed for 3200 career yards and rushed for 1100. He's a 6-2, 230, (about the same size as Jaylon Smith) 22 year old with a motor. I wish our backs hit the line like he does.
Just my guess but I highly doubt AC can play. Not only was he gone for most of the UNC game but it appeared that its the same shoulder so I'm definitely not counting on him to be ready.
Maybe its a coincidence but the two weeks that AC was preparing to play and gets hurt, there's talk that the secondary is having communication trouble. The weeks that he was ruled out and the secondary was practicing without him, they seemed to be gelling. Interesting to me.

Not even close to Andrew Luck...
Yes, he is. In his scrambling and running ability, which is what that was in reference to.
Jameis Winston is just too good. How many times in the second half did we get pressure only to have him step up and fire a perfect pass over the middle? That was frustrating.
This is a very good defense, regardless. Once we have depth and experience, we are going to be lights out.

Can't fault BVG on any of this. Winston was just ridiculous good in the 2nd half. We were often all over his face and he still found the right receiver somehow and threw off-balance perfect throws. BVG is a fabulous DC. Why anyone would want to seriously question what he's done for this defense eludes my comprehension. I don't want anyone else as my DC. Sometimes the opposing QB is just too good no matter who you are.
To the first- sure you can. FSU made adjustments, BVG didn't counter well enough. To the sencond- agreed, and I don't think the two bolded items need to be mutually exclusive in order for them to be valid.
