Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this is the first time in our history that the ND coach has willingly left to take another job. If you're the sort of person who likes to consider the ND job to be one of the top 3-4 in the country, this is one hell of a dark day.

And not very long after Elko made a lateral move to a different program.

It's time to accept the fact that ND isn't going to commit resources to match the top level. Maybe they're right not to do that, IDK.

Honestly, I'd be game. I think we could hang onto him for life. Fickell gives me strong "waiting to get back to Ohio State" vibes

He tried this once in 2012 with the NFL, so not surprised. He is ND's John Cooper. He was really really good and the program is in a much better spot. But he was never going to win it all here, not with Quinn or Del like hires. He reached his ceiling and I am frankly surprised on how desperate LSU must be. I think ND will be just fine, announce Freeman and move on. He is our Ryan Day. Have faith.
