If we make the playoffs this year I'll never say a bad word about BK again. Big IF though.

I don't think this year will change my feelings on Kelly regardless, unless he wins a Natty, then he's my guy through and through... I've always 'liked' him and have been happy we have him but he also frustrates me in a few ways that really stick... Like I said when this thread opened, I have never been a big detractor or his biggest fan... I see enough on either side to just nod my head.

Of course I want to win the NC and that should be the program's goal every year. 6 years into BK's tenure we have built the depth and have enough top end talent to realistically compete for it most seasons.

But my bar for BK isn't even winning the title, though I really want us to like I said, I want us to eliminate games like the Northwestern game last year, every Pitt game over the past decade, and the UVA game this year. I want to throttle the teams we're clearly better than and beat top end teams on a consistent basis. Every year we should be in a position to win a national title, seasons like 2014 shouldn't happen any more. The more you put yourself in the top 5, the more opportunities you have to win it all and at some point it will likely happen. We are far enough along in the BK era that we should be winning 10 games damn near every year and be consistently top 7-10ish every year.

I'm not demanding a Saban-esque run (though I wouldn't turn it down) I'm asking something closer to Mark Richt's time at UGA or Oregon's run since Chip Kelly took over, but with hopefully at least 1 NC win mixed in.

Dennis Dodd from CBS Sports.com was on the sports talk show this morning here in Nashville and says all reporters he's talked to say Brian Kelly is in a huge lead for Coach of the Year. Dealing with injuries, QB transfer, and "a schedule that kills".....

It's 3 games into the season, but yeah he should be.

He was stating he had talked to multiple other sources at ESPN, NBC Sports as well as those in CBS Sports that Kelly has other traits that have led them to this decision. Items such as character, keeping the kids in school, punishments for grades, etc...

Was a really good interview with Dodd and he still believes with the injuries that the Irish will get a really good bowl. He believes the only loss will be U$C. If not for the injuries, Dodd said he would believe the Irish would go undefeated after watching the GT game.

Guess we will see.

Agreed. However if we can get to our bye at 6-1 with a close loss then I think we can realistically be in playoff-or-bust mode.

We really need to run the table again if we want to be in the playoff. There was enough stink about Baylor/TCU being left out last year (Despite having weak schedules). I doubt they're going to let us in, regardless of our schedule, if we have 1 loss and a Power 5 opponent who also has 1 loss and a conference game is the other option.

Ulk, you're saying two different things.

Incorrect.

Correct.

We would not get in at 11-1 over a 12-1 conference champion. But I think we would get in at 11-1 over an 11-1 Big 12 champion and/or an 11-2 conference champion.

What if our loss is to a 1-loss SC or Clemson (+conf champ) and the conf champ's loss is to a BAD OOC team (say OSU vs W.Mich this week)? Could make things interesting...

I'll bet you anything you want that we would get in ahead of a 12-1 Georgia Tech or 12-1 Clemson if our loss was to USC.

That's what I'm saying. The problem is there are 4 conferences that play championship games, so for us to have any kind of chance of getting in with 1 loss then one of those 4 champions almost HAS to have 2 losses to get in. We likely aren't getting in at 11-1 if PAC-12, SEC, B1G, and ACC champs are 12-1. That's why I'm saying we HAVE to run the table if we want to guarantee a spot, because I'm thinking it's probably not going to happen otherwise when you consider the Big 12 champ is still out there too and I could see Oklahoma getting the nod over us if they're 11-1. Their schedule is comparable.

Yeah, there's probably a few scenarios where we get in over a 12-1 conference champ if the conference champ is GT or Clemson and we end up with wins over both. Our loss would have to be very close and against a good opponent though. I imagine there would be a lot of cries of "foul" if only 3 conference champions make it in, we're the 4th team, and there's a conference champion at 12-1 that's left out.

I actually think if the Committee truly ignores last season we get in ahead of any 1 loss Big Ten or Pac 12 or ACC team unless it's Michigan St. with a loss to OSU.

There is no way we get pushed out of the top 4 in conference championship week IMO. We don't play TCU or Baylor's schedule from last year.

If either tOSU or MSU run the table, they'll be in, although I could see MSU losing to tOSU and the Buckeyes have had some struggles at QB so either team could drop one in your scenario. I think you're right that MSU will get in if they lose a close one to the Buckeyes and still manage to win the conference, but tOSU's schedule is so bad the reverse probably isn't true. I mean...holy fuck...they have MSU and....Michigan? Maybe VT ends up decent? I dunno. In any case, tOSU probably doesn't get into the playoff this year with 1 loss unless all the other options are worse than 11-1.

PAC-12 champ, I wouldn't count on getting in over them. If UCLA survives their injuries with one loss to a good opponent, then they have a decent enough schedule they could get the nod. If Oregon wins out, Oregon's one loss would be to Michigan State in East Lansing. I'm sure there's other teams in the PAC-12 that could get in with 1 loss.

SEC champ gets in regardless.

The only other conference that has a champ with a championship game would be the ACC, and we could potentially get in over FSU and certainly Clemson/GT if we're 2-0 in both those games, but it would depend on who FSU's loss is to and all that.

There's still the option that Oklahoma could run the table or possibly get in over us at 11-1. I don't think TCU/Baylor make it with 1 loss again, Oklahoma at least played Tennessee in Neyland Stadium which was a decent win.

Didn't know where to put this and not sure if already posted.

Top Power 5 schools to coach at - ESPN Video

I don't know if you find this surprising or not, but ND still the the top destination for coaches in college ball.

That is kind of surprising. I could see ND in the top five but I'd think Texas, OSU, USC, Bama, Florida, maybe a couple others, would be higher. I wonder if those coaches are thinking about the academic challenges.
Or maybe the grass is always greener.

Stanford being up there makes no sense. They have shit for fans. Georgia makes sense. Great recruiting, great boosters, low key compared to Bama.

I'd say LSU, Texas, USC, Notre Dame, OSU, Michigan would be ones I'd consider for sure.

Any way we slice it, Stanford has no business being on that list.

I would say USC should be in the top 5. But Stanford I think is just the trendy pick, the whole academics thing and the perception that they do it right. Kinda like what we like to boast about ND but everyone just ignores.

For coaches in the "Group of 5" conferences.

Still a good indicator of the prestige of the top coaching positions. If anything it makes the poll more accurate by not the conference bias the power 5 coaches would have. I'm sure its not hard for you to imagine all the SEC coaches picking Bama, Pac 10 picking USC, BIG going for OSU and such. A lot of Power 5 coaches got started in the group of 5 so there that too.

This is a perfect example of what I was referring to in this post... You're running it down their throat, they can't stop you, but instead of forcing them to stop the running game we call a go route and it's anybody's game now against an opponent you should have buried already, again... His insistence on being cute when it's unneeded drives me fvkin nuts....

Calling plays to stretch the field is not "being cute"; it's a time tested way to keep defenses from just selling out against the run. And they did throw to Will Fuller, not some scrub off the end of the bench. It was a nice play by the DB to break the pass up, and then an incredibly lucky bounce for UMass.

Not even joking before that play I told my family, 'you watch Kelly will try to force it through the air here and it'll be picked and we will be in a game..."

Hate the call with a fresh QB when you're dominating on the ground...

Just me. Again I'm not hating on Kelly, just pointing out that it's stuff like that play that has frustrated me from the start.
