This post got me a red bomb from him...not a response like someone who can handle a conversation, but a negative rep LOL. When you can't handle the conversation, throw a red bomb at him! That'll show him!

Hope that sky didn't fall on your head too hard buddy. And hey, let us know how your search for a replacement for Coach Kelly is going! Cheers!

Welcome to our world... lol

I mean, think about your behavior. Calling BK a moron, saying that he was already basically gone, and basically posting like a chicken without his head was a joke. (You weren't the only one.) I will never understand the segment of Internet fans who post the first things that pop in their heads, irregardless of facts. Yeah, it's a message board and we're supposed to discuss things, but why not wait until the facts come out just a little before we fly off the handle??? So many of these embarrassing comments could have been avoided had we just waited for the facts to come out.

So it's awesome to be a passionate fan, but if you're going to act overly dramatic and say stupid things, well, people are going to react to it, and rightfully so...

Per Mike Frank from ISD:

He acknowledges that his thoughts here are his opinions based upon 3rd and 4th hand information, but obviously he’s more plugged in than most/all of us. He believes BK had genuine interest in the NFL (and it's obvious at this point that the Eagles had genuine interest in him), and that it was not just an either/or leverage ploy. And he believes BK still has genuine NFL interest, and we won’t likely see a move any time soon but who knows 5 years or so down the road. Also believes Swarbrick when he says that a raise and extension for BK has been in the works for weeks, and thinks he’ll be bumped up into the neighborhood of $5M per year. And believes that a budget increase for assistant coaches’ pay is also something BK wants.

All of this makes sense to me. A few have suggested, or perhaps insisted, that all of this was merely a leverage ploy. Mike Frank doesn’t agree with this assessment. Who knows for sure, but my read on the situation is more consistent with his than not.

I'm not worried about 5 years down the road. That would be 8 years into BK's tenure at ND. I don't expect him to be around for 20 years. If Kelly can keep recruiting top classes I think in about 2 years we should really be on the level to compete every season with any program in the country. If Kelly jumps to the NFL eventually I think the program will be very stable and as long as we don't make really poor coaching hires after that we should be ok.

Mike Farrell ‏@rivalsmike

Cause I talked to him “@NDIrishManiac: @rivalsmike What makes you think Anzalone flipped because of Kelly?”

I totally agree. I just want to get to the level of elite perennial title contenders. We are already almost there. If Kelly stays for 5 years and still wants to go to the league I'll just be thrilled to have had him for so long.

Also, if Diaco and Martin haven't moved on by then, one of them will may be ready to take over as head coach.

so then was BK's flirtation with the NFL for professional growth or was it for program changes as some would have us believe?

This is the big question, isn't it? I mean both Kelly's and Swarbrick's statements on the matter made it seem like, contrary to what we believed all week, there was no furious negotiating on ND's end at all ... it was just a matter of Kelly deciding what he wanted to do. That simply can't be right, but it may be that Kelly was more interested in leaving than we realized.

Well there is that...

Anzalone did say that he flipped because of Kelly's flirtation with the NFL--I mean I believe Anzalone told other reporters that as well as Farrell-- but I'll never buy it. He always wanted to go to Florida deep down, and Kelly gave him a convenient excuse to flip. That's it.

Yup.
Amazing that, aside from sort of Danny Mattingly, he's the only drama we've really had in recruiting. Especially compared to the last couple of years. Of course, drama season is about to kick off.

I don't doubt for a second that Anzalone was beyond relieved to have this Kelly situation fall in his lap. AA was headed to Florida regardless. This just allowed him to come across as a victim rather than a weasel. I have no sources on this, just what I've seen/read on AA since his flip from OSU.

Jamel James, but that appears to be more along the lines of this year's Boom Perkins. Still not thrilled with that loss.

Maybe you are right and maybe not. I read posts on here about delusional fanbases for other teams all the time. Anytime OSU doesn't get their man, they claim that he didn't have a commitable offer. When USC doesn't get their man, they really didn't want him anyway. Consider for a moment that an outsider reading this post might arrive at the same conclusion about ND's fanbase. I'm as happy as anyone that Kelly isn't leaving, but I'm not willing to pretend that this was handled well.

I'm not aiming this just at you Piombino, but why is it so difficult for us to accept that the Kelly interview with the Eagles might have some negative effect? Anzalone told the world that it did in his case, and instead of taking him at his word, we asssume the is a lying weasel. Neither Kelly or ND are above making mistakes or errors in judgment. And, that is OK. What isn't OK -- what is simply embarrasing -- is to make such excuses in the face of evidence.

I'm not claiming that I know anything, but I think AA's history speaks for itself. Plus, I think his dad's preference was always pretty clear. Given all that in addition to the fact that NO ONE else wavered, or at least bolted, you have to think that there was something not quite solid about his commitment to ND. Honest question- would you rather an 11th hour decommitment or a 1st/2nd year transfer? Because I never saw this kid sticking. Other than Jamel James (whose commitment I never got in the first place), this is the only kid whose decommitment would not have surprised me.

I don't think it's a coincidence (or a surprise) that of the nearly two dozen committed recruits, Anzalone is the one that flaked. He can say whatever he wants. If it was a different kid that flipped, I'd be more inclined to believe that it had something to do with BK. Anzalone doesn't have any credibility because he hasn't earned it. I'm not mad at him, and I wish him the best. I'm just not going to lose sleep over it.

Also, even if that was the reason, I'd rather have a happy coach and a well paid staff than one flaky linebacker, so either way I'm not too worried about it.

+1. Nothing really to add. Can't take anything he says at face value. Plus he initiated contact with Florida well before BK interviewed anywhere.

Personally, I think he took the interview that so that the NFL coaching door would not close on him. Turn the NFL down, and they may not come calling again. Eventually, I am sure he will have serious interest in an NFL job. I think he was just making sure that teams will not pass him by, when he is ready.

Happy coach and well paid staff vs. Azalone don't have to be mutually exclusive. I think it is possible that ND could have had both if this situation was handled better (read, less publically). Was he wavering ... sure, probably. Lots of kids do this time of year. Although I acknowledge that there were some contention with Azalone when he first waivered in his commitment and looked at Fla., I think most on IE were pretty stoked that he "decided" to stick it out with ND. Observing our fans go on these roller coaster rides where they change their views on people and behaviors based on whatever they want to think about ND strikes me as comical. Was Kiel a flake when he left left Indiana for LSU and LSU for ND? Was Golson a flake when he left NC for ND? How 'bout Carlysle when he went to USC and transfered after a year? I'll bet that is what the fans for those other schools were saying. My point is that we sound silly when we make excuses for mistakes. We would have more credibility as a fanbase if we were simply able to just admit that this wasn't handled well and leave it at that.

Really?? I disagree, but probably more appropriate for his recruiting thread.

I do agree with your assessment Bogs that "what was rotten became beautiful." It really did, and it is really surprising to me how favorably this has worked for BK's image. I think deep down, I will look at him in a different sort of light after this, at least for the foreseeable future. I'm not going to doubt that he is ND, however.

Actually, we probably don't disagree. I just didn't put quote makrs around what people were saying to devalue the loss of AA. In other words, the loss of AA is one incontrovertable proof that these suave, supermen were not entirely in control, or on their best behavior, and the might have bungled things a bit. But if someone entirely devalues the worth of a recruit then "Ce n'est pas rien!" It is nothing, and the narative has change. "Look what we were saved from!"

Yeah, the difference between Kelly leaving now and a few years down the road is huge IMO. He basically has signed 2 solid classes and is on the verge of signing a monumental one. If he left now they could lose half the commitments in this class or at least some very key kids. The program desperately needs the depth of the next couple classes. Once we get there if Kelly leaves it will be disappointing but not program devastating like if he left now.

Some more than others. Sometimes only 1 of a class of 20+ actually jumps ship. Proof is in the pudding with this one. Some sources claim he had his bags packed prior to the BK news breaking. I don't think it's fair to put this one on BK.

Then, there is no stronger and quicker way to make the world a better place than insisting on telling the truth to others.

Even though Azalone said that it WAS the reason? He's the guy who would know best. There are litterally dozens of decommits every year in college football recruiting, but this guy is the biggest flake of all? Why? Because he left ND? What about all the guys on our roster who were commiitted elsewhere but came here instead? Why are they not flakes? Because they came to ND? That's how this argument presents itself in my mind and the easiest way for me to come to grips with it is to acknowledge that mistakes were made and accept that.
