Maybe a Russian bear, declawed and detoothed. Ready for sambo?

Declawed and detoothed? What's the point? Might as well just lay Bea Arthur's corpse in there if we're cutting corners.

Maybe this is the impasse? BK wants full on bear, admin only wants to pay for toothless one?

Brian Kelly returns from the Bahamas within the hour, per source. Will be an interesting next 48 hrs. #notredame

Lol. I don't believe a word anyone says anymore about this until BK or JS speaks.

Can't believe anything anyone says

Feldman: Bahamas
Schefter: Europe
Hamilton: Nashville

All from their "sources"

My bet is a rogue group of Ukrainian Michigan fans have kidnapped BK demanding the staff force flip Malik to UM or else, "There will be drastic consequences for the little Irish man."

What makes this so hard is that we all have a fan's (or alumni's) love for ND, but Kelly has a mercenary interest (combined with whatever "love" has grown for him since coming on board four years ago). That makes it hard for me to just say, "well, a man's got a right to take care of his family." Of course he does. But I don't think there is one of us (excepting the random troll) who wouldn't have asked ourselves, if we had Kelly's talents and and opportunities, and stood in his shoes, as at least a major consideration, "How do I maximize my opportunity with respect to my career and family, and yet protect/help the University of Notre Dame (its recruiting class, its image, the current team)?"

Face it: as a general rule, college football coaches have NOT particularly embodied the gold standard of selflessness and dedication to anything other than self interest. This example makes it appear a coach can't even weigh anything OTHER THAN self interest. If Kelly had broader goals -- increase his income/incentives and those of his staff, increase his ability to produce a top program, protect the recruiting class, continue program ascendancy -- it seems clear to me that there were better ways to have done it, consistent with a love for Notre Dame. I'm not saying Kelly doesn't love the school in some ways, just that it is different than the "purer" love we all have; and that's why this circus is so hard to deal with.

As it is -- and I may well stand corrected on this, once we see how it plays out and what the actual timeline of issues and events is -- I am disappointed in Kelly and the way this has been handled.

I saw posted earlier that part of the reason for the NC game result was lack of depth. I saw it as an obvious talent gap. Bama marched right down the field the very first drive, the second, and third. Matter of fact as the game went on the Irish appeared to me to close the gap. Maybe due to; conditioning. BK may very well be trying to admission standards lowered. O had always heard that Holtz had the same wishes and finally gave up.

I don't know if he wants an NFL job now. He may want a competitive chance. He has done a good job. He may believe he needs more to compete in the BCS games or playoffs, when they start. I like BK. I didn't really care for the hire because I had doubt about his ability to recruit at ND. I was wrong. He got ND on the cusp of competing with the stacked teams. Does he need more to get all the way there? Does he want an NFL job where the field is more even? Is he a jackass for wanting anything for himself? Can you imagine having a job where you get to the top and lose? What is the top nowadays at ND?

Is this for real? If so, man, these guys are idiots.

Twitter isn't really like ordinary journalism. I doubt there are rules of "number of sources," or even vetting for credibility.

These guys just hear something from someone and post their speculation on Twitter.

Obviously none of us know what's really going on here, but I'd be surprised if this was about admissions standards. That's a fine debate to have, but doing it in the context of suddenly, secretly interviewing for an NFL job is all wrong. That's a long-term issue regarding a core value of the university. Besides, he obviously had an interview with Philly set up before the Alabama game.

Based on what I've seen of him over the last few years, and seen reported in the last few days, I wouldn't be surprised if the guy is just sincerely interested in the chance to coach in the NFL (who wouldn't be?). He's always been a climber. Couple that with Lurie, an owner of a good franchise who's very much interested in hiring a college coach. It could be a great opportunity. I wouldn't blame him for taking it.

But, then, obviously what he's got at Notre Dame is a great opportunity, too. In many ways a greater one than the NFL, and probably a better fit for Kelly's strengths as a coach. I hope he has the wisdom to realize that. I also hope we know soon because I can't take much more of this.

CBS sports saying Kelly or Bradley on top of list. Kelly took a second interview this AM.

I'm less inclined to think this was simply a play by Kelly if he indeed took a second interview. Further, if he's supposedly on top of the wish list, I'm starting to think Phily isn't screwing around either.

I quickly scanned through this thread today, so if someone already addressed this...apologies...I missed it. I will say I did pick up optimism from various posters/insiders. We'll see.

AS for coaches...Love Martin...he's been successful elsewhere, and as a head man. He meets my requirements (whatever that matters). I also like Chris Ault...who said in an interview he stepped down from Nevada...he didn't retire.

It is strange that 'journalists' are willing to just say **** on twitter that they never would otherwise. It still seems to damage their cred if they just spout off.

On the positive side:

It would be cool if, after receiving the Walter Camp College Coach Of The Year Award, Kelly told the media that he decided to stay at ND.

Secondly, if ND set up a Scholarship Fund for players being cut, which would enable ND to oversign, the damage to the kid would be minimized. If he still had a dream to play college football, he could transfer and get a scholarship to a lower profile school. If his dream was over, he could still get a college education.

I suspect ND is not the only school considering this option. Something has got to be done to level the playing field with the SEC.

As stupid as this may sound, I have to ask... Would setting up a scholarship fund for cut players be against NCAA rules?

It's a great idea though. Every school should be able to do that.

Isn't a scholarship fund just a work-around of the scholarship limit? Don't really understand the rules myself.

Call me outdated or uniformed but I was always under the impression that a scholarship for playing football was a four year deal. Has that changed? I know the SEC does something different but is that what it has come to? The players might as well not even be students.

No, they're year-to-year deals.

This. Chip Kelly and O'Brien literally have done the same thing as BK to this point... and that is meet with the Eagles. Both of them did that, Chip was even rumored to be a "done deal" to an NFL team, and both just got pay raises and stayed put. So far the only thing Kelly has done that has been confirmed is a meeting in Miami on Tuesday with the Eagles.

Everything else is noise. Nobody killed Chip Kelly about it. Nobody killed O'Brien about it. But somehow Brian Kelly has "irreparably damaged" himself by doing a meeting and then going on vacation.

Sensationalism at its finest.

Not that simple.
Oregon isn't considered to be a top of the mountain/never leave/destination job.
IMO, ND and Penn St are.
Penn St has been tarnished and are under sanctions making the choice to leave very understandable.

Oregon has certainly made it into the "destination job" category.

Nothing new other than speculation that Kelly is at the top of Eagle's list.

Even if Kelly is at the top of their list, it doesn't say anything about his intentions.
