alright, who is Kelly's replacement? Does dreamy eyes Diaco get the nod? What about Alford? This late in the game i feel like we need someone close to the program involved. truly sad we have to think about this nonsense with a potential #1 class on a silver platter for Kelly.

Boomer!

Shits breaking down homey.

But we got this.

I'm probably gonna catch some **** for this post but oh well, I'm gonna be honest, this is ****ing bullshit. My wife and I went to the National Championship game and screamed and cheered our *** off with thousands of Irish fans as we got drilled by Alabama. Never once did any Irish fan boo the product or the coach, we simply kept cheering the team on and even loss, we were so proud of the Irish team and Kelly. The Irish fans packed that stadium and parking lot and had at least 65 percent of the stadium filled with Irish fans that even Alabama fans took notice of how many of us there were and this is what we get. No word, no nothing! A day after the damn game he is talking with the Eagles and now cant be reached, what a bunch of ****. It pisses me off because regardless of motivation this should have been handled much differently and the fans, recruits and players dont deserve this, ND is not a stepping stone for the NFL and the **** *** Eagles, I am sorry if I am out of line but I am pissed, this just plain sucks.

No matter what happens my perspective of BK is alot different now. Now we get a taste of what Cinci went thru...

I'm not sure yet. This is only 48 hours old. If the one change is that AA left and was already going to, it's no big deal. If it's real flirtation, well, that's different.

But if he signs an extension over the weekend, this three-day stretch will seem pretty much like a blip.

It's funny, but my neighbor is a Central Michigan alum. When I learned that I mentioned how much I liked Kelly (who was at ND at the time). He said "That guy's an *******. He screwed us over." I just sort of chuckled to myself that that always happens to the Central Michigans (or Cincy's) of the world.
Oh, well.

Maybe it's just that I've been pressing f5 too much today, but I'm starting to feel really bad about this.

Of the current staff, most likely Martin. He's the only one who's been a head coach. And Diaco just doesn't feel ready for the spotlight.
But I'd take a run at Al Golden, too. Shaw from Stanford for sure. Maybe Mark D'Antonio or James Franklin.
Ideally, though, Brian Kelly.

I completely agree with RedBar here... If BK bolts, it will be Chuck Martin. Just a personal feeling here.

I completely agree with HCTI who completely agrees with Redbar here, and there. Chuck Martin is the man. He would blow your socks off and keep continuity.

Lost in much of this discussion if the FREAKING FANTASTIC JOB the rest of the staff has been doing to keep this class together. Pete Sampson singled out Alford as literally working nonstop.

If Kelly comes back, he better buy each one of these guys a Rolls. They are holding this class together and not getting enough praise. If Alford or Diaco or Cooks gets a call from another program after this about a promotion, I wouldn't be upset at all. These guys deserve it.

However my hope is that we can wrap these guys up for at least 2 years. It'll be tough, but hopefully Daddy (S)warbucks and Father Johnny on the Spot do whatever it takes to get these guys raises.

I really don't like any of those options, but BK of course.

If we didn't get a Stoops (or something similar in stature,) we're gonna tailspin again for a while.

I agree with this statement as well. You will never be able to trust him 100% and ni matter how much you give him this will be an every year saga after.

All this while our recruits are getting hit up by other schools recruits/coaches etc. Then our staff wondering what is going on and start looking for jobs with other schools (after all they have to provide for their family). Whats not to like....

Kelly will go down as the most evil genius of all-time if he reups and did all of this to take our mind off Monday night. Honestly haven't even thought about the debacle I witnessed firsthand earlier this week since this story began. One can dream right?

John L. Smith is still available...

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

I think he'd fail in the pros much like Saban. He has zero NFL experience and is a program builder more than anything else. In the NFL, the playing field gets leveled and you have to be innovative to get ahead.

I agree. Carroll had prior NFL experience and Harbaugh played in the NFL for however long. The Eagles do have talent, so he might be able to hit the ground running but it's night like he's an offensive genius or anything. I think Weis would do better in the NFL as HC than Kelly.

Everyone tries to find/invent scenarios that they can live with, at least in hope until reality sorts itself out. If I had my wish, given the nerve wrangling moments we've been through, it's this:

1). it has always been a high pressure negotiation, and Kelly really wants to stay at ND;
2). the pain has been made necessary as part of the high-pressure because Kelly and Swarbrick could not get anything done privately;
3). a major element in these rocky negotiations is how much Kelly wants in raises for his assistants;
4). this gets settled soon.

Reflecting on #3: if this is a major element in what's going on, it ameliorates many of the emotion-raging things. It would place Kelly in a much less self-oriented light, and fit into his previous image as a team builder and system organizer. More importantly for me is that it would say to me that Kelly really is not planning to be anywhere else for a significant while. You do not try to solidify the staying of your staff if your plan is to quickly abandon your crew anyway the following year. Instead, Kelly would be doing a "Beamer" where Frank would take essentially zero raise in contract talks but fight like crazy for assistant compensation.

All of that can be wrong, but it is pleasanter for me to imagine it that way than the visions many people here seem to want to be true.

But the Gator guy said the staff was on vacation.
