Not surprising, really. Slaughter's always been more athletic; if not for last year's injury, there wouldn't have been a question at all.

I hear you on that, but the depth is never going to be perfect.

I still think Hercules cross-trains a little bit and may ultimately end up at Cat. Plus, let's hope for an elite OLB in the next class, right?

I think they feel they have enough linebacker depth overall to create depth for each individual linebacker position. I get what you're saying but they will get people in the right positions to help them this year while also keeping an eye on the future. I'm pretty confident in that.

I think most people assumed this outcome. At least I did. I still think Motta will play significant time.

That was the initial assumption, but during one of his presser's last week, Kelly implied that Nix will be the #1 and Cwynar the #2. It's unclear presently.

I see your point, but it's not quite the same situation. Slaughter still played a lot; he was just hobbled with an ankle injury, so he wasn't the #1. When both guys are healthy, most of us assumed he would separate himself from Motta, and it appears he has.

He will get about 20 snaps a game. He isn't conditioned or ready to start yet.

He will still get a ton of reps, don't worry. Going to be similar with a lot of these positions - because of the new found quality depth, there will be rotations to keep players fresh and have us playing effectively in the fourth quarter. Some of the starters, as we are seeing, are only differentiated in name and depth chart wise. The "backups" can and will play.

Huh?

I think Diaco means that both will start at different times during the season to utilize their strengths, Fox will start against the spread type teams like USF to utilize his speed and pass coverage ability and Calabrese will start against the power offenses like Mich State to utilize his run stopping ability.

That's how I perceive it anyways.
