This previous year's field looks similar. I agree, the instagram effect probably has a little to do with it. Regardless, I like the way it looks when they do this.
It seems like ND changed the grass a little. I don't remember there being such a large contrast between the two shades of green. Then again, it could be just a sweet mow job.

Its the use of a roller to make the grass bend in opposite directions and thus reflecting light a little differently and producing different shades of green. Same technique used in MLB.
usually it's just a stencil and some water or if it's lighter shaded dirt it's turface.
My shoes are brown from the field.

There's something the ND blogger for ESPN did with BK in an interview, and there's a decent quote from BK in it.
I'll try to find it but if someone else finds is please post.
Edit:
Matt - You've got a while now before you play at home again. How important will it be to resolve whatever issues there are with the playing surface? I know it seems every year like, 'Field Turf could come! Field Turf could come!' What will those conversations be like, if they haven't already taken place?
BK: It is paramount to our home-field situation, relative to playing and continued success. And I think I've put Jack (Swarbrick) out on the spot on this and he's addressed it. He's had a series of meetings and I'm very confident that we're going to have the field situation resolved in a very short period of time.
Q&A Brian Kelly of Notre Dame Fighting Irish after 2013 season - ESPN
Like many people, I think the grass is a great touch to such an historic stadium. HOWEVER, field turf couldn't come soon enough. I don't know what it is, but watching on tv just feels like they are playing on sand sometimes. In the next 10-20 years, I don't think there will be many more D-1 schools, north of the Mason-Dixon line, with natural grass.
Color me ND Nation, but I feel that domed stadiums and artificial turf are the bane of sport. Shitty conditions are a part of life. Differences between natural and artificial turf attributed injuries are not statistically significant. Installation and maintenance costs may well be roughly equivalent over time.
The natural world is life, and should be respected and celebrated
.
Grass in the northwest just isnt practical when there is a better product out there. If ND was a running a triple option attack, or a Stanford power run game, I would be more inclined to stick with the natural grass. But, Kelly is building a team that can play fast, and use their speed to their advantage. Some people say its the same surface, both teams play on it.....Look at the games ND played on turf. Arizona St was a team filled with speed and would give ND fits. ND arguably played faster that night. Michigan....they played fast.
I love it. I want that jumbotron too. A lil pre-game video showing the team walking down the steps slapping the sign LIVE...is only going to get that crowd fired up from the start.

Personally, I think I'd be cool with a jumbotron, if it was done tastefully. The worst aspect of the jumbotroning (sp) of ND stadium would be the advertising. I'm not a communist, socialist, whatever, but that stuff would get on my nerves. Keep it out. No kiss cams. No cheesy interviews. TP hype videos and the like, replays, and highlights only..
