Why not have a UBI anyways? Progressive tax on it so that at a certain threshold it's fully taxed back so those that don't need it won't get it.

Paying off mortgages would be a terrible move, it would be like lowering the corporate tax rate more than the personal tax rate.
If you do that, then you're not treating everyone fairly, but I imagine a UBI would see unemployment go up and less jobs filled. as those who get the UBI would have less incentive to work.

It's a great idea and would pump a lot more money back into the economy than paying off loans of a select group of students.

I could go 45 min outside of the city and do that. My point that RDU's rage clouded was that it should be a big problem that affordability of purchasing homes in the city on a six figure salary isn't possible that for those less fortunate they're cooked.

It's jokes seeing the boomers lose their minds that restaurants can't find staff and the answer is that "kids are lazy", not that they aren't paying enough for those servers to live within a reasonable range.
You want to live the hipster lifestyle with a downtown apartment go ahead. You make your choices and that's okay. I don't have a problem with that. You also made the choice to educate yourself and earn your way through life. I applaud that. For the less fortunate, many of them are there by their own choices.

Not sure where the Boomers are that are crying about service. I always tip generously and every now and then pay for the food or drink for the person behind me in the drive-thru lane. Boomers is a lazy excuse just like blaming lazy kids. BTW.......when I was a kid, we were also thought to be lazy. That's been passed down from generation to generation.

If I apply a progressive tax? We do something similar up here with OAS (old age security) where it gets paid out for people over 67 and progressively gets taxed back on those who don't need it.

UBI isn't necessarily about "fairness" it's about targeted support for the least fortunate. It's similar to the parking spots reserved at the front of parking lots, we all understand why it's there and I think we're all fine walking a bit farther so those with ailments can use them. No one would be getting rich off UBI and it would be corrected through taxing it back.

FTR - By no means am I advocating for a substantial UBI, admittedly I haven't looked at the research since I studied this in the early 2010's. I do remember reading Canadian specific welfare vs employment rates and you are correct that employment rates decrease when welfare is expanded. Though that study focused on Quebec however, and they are a bit of a unique case. The key factor was that the criteria for applying for welfare is vastly different between CA vs US as the conditions are tougher in the US which would reduce the relationship between welfare and unemployment.

I believe 80% of those that receive SNAP also work.

Student debt forgiveness isn’t just for the blue haired barista at Starbucks who got a useless degree. Yes it would help xir, but it would also help people like teachers and doctors and other professionals that got their degree and are working in their fields of study and are still burdened by their debt.

My wife is a nurse. She works with doctors who are roughly the same age as her. Their take home pay is effectively less than hers because they have such outrageous student debt. $10k towards their debt is going to be injected right back into the economy.

College costs need to be fixed, but I don’t think it’s helpful to just let a whole generation languish under the debt that many had to take before we fixed the problem.

They don't care about who actually gets help and how that help would impact.

You are never going to penetrate the inherent selfishness.

Of course it's not, but if you're going to do it, make it fair for everyone who has student loans regardless of when they got them. Four of my five still have student loans they are paying on. Maybe the ones who should get the forgiveness are those that have a proven track record of paying their loans over a certain period of time. Use the forgiveness money as an incentive to pay your loans. Make your payments for X years and you get the forgiveness money. Worked for 13 years at Sallie Mae. The worst at repaying their loans are far and away doctors.

Agree, the cost of college is way out of hand. Maybe Joe should be working on the colleges to reduce their tuition, housing, etc.

It would be for anyone who currently has loans, no?

Cost of college is something that absolutely needs to be addressed but any meaningful change won't come before there is a complete economic collapse. Almost ruins the point of loan forgiveness if they're just going to let costs run wild. Obviously we know what happened in 2020, but having tuition increase at rates of 2-3% a year while wages haven't grown anywhere near that.

I think he's referring to Biden's plan that was $20k for people making under $125k and 10k for those over that limit.

Cut the interest rates rather than pay off the loans. Help people help themselves.

Apply a portion of income taxes paid to student loan principal (i.e. invest in your most productive).

If you want to destroy the exploding college cost problem - have schools co-sign instead of parents. Watch how fast shit gets fixed if the tatted up art history majors are able to BK and wipe out their loans they will never pay back with obscure Private U holding the bag.

Following the USWNT’s disappointing loss to Sweden in the penalty kick shootout, United States President Joe Biden posted a message on Twitter where he said that the team has “made your country proud.”

“@USWNT, you’ve made your country proud. Congratulations on an incredible run. This team is something special and I’m looking forward to seeing how you continue to inspire Americans with your grit and determination – on and off the field,” Biden said in his tweet.

You mean the team of hyper-woke people who refused to sing the national anthem, show any respect towards the country they represent, or the country that's allowed them all to become quite wealthy and famous? That's who you're praising and think the country is proud of? Just when you think Joe can't get any more tone deaf and stupid, he hands you his beer and says, "Hey, watch this!" JFC, he's a witless obtuse moron.

Lol, what kind of comment is this? They've got to fucking sing now!? I would stack my service to the country against any one here (not to one up as better or worse) and there is now fucking way I'm gonna bother signing the lyrics.

Also, those ladies are not wealthy.

That team was something special, before they focused more on woke politics and not the game. They took 11 shots on goal in regulation to Sweden's 1 and still lost.

Good for her for calling him out. It amazes me how Biden has been shown to be a perpetual liar, yet he keeps getting a pass by the media.

Wait for it, wait for it.

The only time the media will call out a democrat is if it helps another democrat. If the media has an epiphany on Joe, it’s because they want another name on the ballot and they’ve coordinated from within the party the represent to take down Joe. Being a Dem press secretary is the easiest job on earth.

That family has become the very definition of white trash. I used to think no occupant of the White House would ever surpass the Clintons in that regard, but the Bidens have. Crackhead, bribery, child sniffing, showering with your daughter, cocaine, sleeping with your brother's widow, the ridiculous hillbilly verbal & mental gaffes, the corruption, the lies. the stripper and stripper baby you don't acknowledge... it just goes on and on. They almost make the Clintons look sophisticated and classy in comparison. Even Billy Carter never looked this trashy.

Quid Pro Joe

Remember the fellow IE members who were perpetually outraged about corruption in the White House, threats to democracy, politicians who were allegedly "owned" by the Russians, and so forth? They're strangely quiet now. When it's a Dem and his family up to their eyeballs in corruption and selling access and influence, they suddenly aren't interested. Apparently there's nothing wrong with it when it's their guy and his family doing it.

The hearings so far have boiled down to a few "I saw," even more "Someone told me they saw," or most of all "Someone told me someone else saw" testimony.

Not a single actual link to the President has been produced.
Not a single bank deposit to the President has been produced.
Not a single President craft has been produced.
Not a single bit of President corruption has been produced.
Not a single bit of alien material was produced.
Not a single bit of President technology has been produced.
Not a single moment of inambiguous video of anything President has been produced.

In other words, all we got was days and days of unsubstantiated second and third hand claims without a single shred of physical evidence. This is the same endless claims without any actual evidence we've heard for decades years. It's just like The Curse Of Oak Island or The Secret Of Skinwalker Ranch TV shows: a never-ending tease full of "This is it!" and "Finally, the proof!" and "Coming up next episode, we reveal all!" empty promises that never actually produce anything of genuine substance. This is why people like me are so skeptical and tired of being told "They're here! We've got proof but can't show it to you yet... but we're just about to!" Second and third hand testimony, unexplained connections or odd paintings, and nothing better than some blurry or grainy video isn't even remotely convincing in any scientific way. Show me the money. Until then, this is going to remain as serious and believable as Bigfoot and Nessie.
