I understand where your coming and I found myself rooting for him and his family during the documentary(I was born in '88 and had no knowledge of this trial before watching). I really believed he had a case and was being treated unfairly but then I started to think about the pictures they were using to compare facial structures. Why werent they able to find any pictures of John when he was younger? They used a picture of him in his 70s to compare with one while he was around 20. You would think that would be exhibit A for either Prosecution or the Defense depending on his appearance back then. I realize many people lost everything bc of the war but that didnt stop them from starting a new life. You would think moving to America with a solid job and starting a family would advocate taking pictures with your family. My parents both grew up in poor familys of immigrants but they still have dozens of photo albums full of pictures. If he didn't have any then what was he hiding from? If he did, then why wasnt the family throwing them at his accusers. Plus the guy admitted, on the stand, that he had an SS tattoo under his armpit that was removed and he wasn't even asked about it. The prosecution didnt even have any knowledge of the tattoo, he just offered the information up along with other inconsistencies in his story about where he spent his time during the war. In the end I think they got it right, he wasnt Ivan the Terrible, but he did serve as a prison guard.
