Indiana wants to continue making bowl games and establish a good program. I dont blame them one bit. They've literally been a laughing stock for decades. Nobody in the Big Ten wants them to be good. They like that easy breather game.

You guys are acting like they are Georgia, Michigan or Ohio State. They are freaking Indiana. They just want to win games, not play difficult OOC schedules.

BTW - Hasn't the SEC and most of the Big Ten had soft OOC schedules for years now? We are holding Indiana to a higher standard? They are Indiana.

Indiana ducks both OSU and Michigan this year, but they still have PSU and Oregon. Illinois is projected to be good and could put up a fight. Indiana's schedule is pretty favorable again, but I don't see them making the playoff this time. Cig jumped in last year because he saw the schedule and knew they could have a good showing. 2026 will be a bit tougher, I wonder if he doesn't get scooped up or leaves after this year.

They canceled a series with fricken UVA, not Tennessee. I don't know how anyone defends this scheduling model and thinks it's not detrimental to the sport....

haha, i used to cheese CFB 2014 by taking a terrible program, scheduling the worst teams to get a high winning percentage, and then using that to boost the school's reputation. i see you Cignetti.

They go to Indiana September 20th. Should be interesting.
I’ve gotta think this is the most consequential IU/UofI football matchup ever. Those two teams are pegged as the 4th/5th Big Ten teams this year and likely make the difference between making the playoffs or not.

You don't establish a good program by canceling games with peers to go beat up on some G5/FCS teams.

I went to IU by the way, so I'm not unbiased here. After last season, we are pretty much on board with whatever Cig wants to do to build the program.

Lol there it is.

You literally played nobody last year, barely made the playoff as a direct result of that, and now are doubling down on a pathetically watered down schedule. But congrats on the weak ass schedules, I guess. I don't think I could ever muster up the courage to defend running away from the Virginia Cavaliers, even on the internet

I would say "ever" is probably true. Most likely within all of our lifetimes for sure.

Bielema going 10-3 in Year 4 could be a sign of things to come or a fluke. We'll know soon. It certainly feels like the program has an identity now more than ever before and some stability. If he continues to succeed, will he bolt for greener pastures? I think he's probably learned from his mistakes in the past and maybe he will settle in at Illinois. Expectations are not very high for football.

Not sure what to make of Cignetti yet. I can do without his cockiness but I guess if he backs it up, whatever.

It was a great and fun year being a fan of both universities. One as a former student and the other as a subway Alum. I'm hoping for many more.

He had a solid run at Wisconsin and I thought him returning to Illinois was a great fit given his success previously in the Midwest. And, like you said, lower expectations. Sure enough, he had the most successful season since the Ron Zook era, probably even Ron Turner.

I don't ever remember Illinois having two B2B great (for their standards) seasons though, so we'll see if Bielema can break that mold, they certainly have higher expectations this year.

That doesn't address any of the concerns or criticisms of their scheduling model, but I am (sincerely) glad that you enjoyed it. They were a fun cinderella story.

May you enjoy more 8-10 win seasons playing South Central Indiana State, Indiana Technical Institute, Space Force and Coast Guard. Just don't come crying around here when your 9-3 Loosiers don't make the playoff because they had zero quality wins. The SEC may have cannibalized themselves last year but that was a fluke.

Yeah I'd say that it'll show that Illinois has a much higher floor with this coaching staff. Shoot, we've seen the Illini make the Rose Bowl this century, but they've not really been consistently a bowl team for a very long time. Bielema has given the program a lot more of a sustainable floor that could let the Illini flirt with being a Tier 2 Big Ten team every couple years.

Watch out for Space Force. I heard their qb has a rocket arm.

This. I had the same feeling and double checked, and sure enough their Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl seasons were flanked by sub 0.500 seasons

Indiana University would be thrilled to go 9-3 regularly. What are we even talking about here? Again, it's Indiana football.

I think there might be some annoyance from some of you in that Indiana didn't just roll over go away against ND. They came back and made it a game. I get that. You wanted to crush him because Cig has some of that Howard Schnellenberger/Jimmy Johnson confident swag.

Lol, they did not come back and "make it a game". Cignetti was absolutely terrified of making any real push to try and win that game. TERRIFIED. When the staff were satisfied they had absolutely dominated the first 95% of the game, they went into prevent/shell and then Cignetti got ultra aggressive to have the illusion of a tight game.

I never make outlandish claims after tightly contested/hard fought games. Georgia could've gone either way, PSU could've definitely gone the other way. The Indiana game was not that. Look at the stats when ND went into their shell defense, waiting for the game to end.

MF had also put in a few subs IIRC.
