Looks like my alma mater, and the school currently featuring 2 ND '12 offers (S Shumate and CB Wright), need to add another game to their schedule, and obviously don't mind logging some miles. Any suggestions for the powerhouse Ironmen?

Rivals High - Don Bosco having a hard time filling schedule

Don Bosco having a hard time filling schedule

Rivals High Senior Analyst

A week after the New Jersey high school athletic association amended its rules to allow teams from the Big North Conference to play three out-of-state games, its highest-profile member - Ramsey (N.J.) Don Bosco Prep - is having a more difficult time setting its schedule than anticipated.

"I thought we would have had it filled already," Don Bosco head coach Greg Toal said. "We have had a couple of discussions with some teams but nothing is close to done."

Don Bosco, which finished as the RivalsHigh national champion in 2009 and No. 6 nationally in 2010, is expected to compete for another title this coming season.

"That is the goal," Toal said. "A lot of things will have to happen for us to do it, but I think this group can do it.

"We will have to stay healthy, of course, and there will have to be some luck, too."

The IronMen will also need another strong out-of-state game to ascend to the top spot nationally.

New Jersey only plays eight regular-season games. Don Bosco will have at most three playoff games.

That 11-game schedule puts Don Bosco at a major disadvantage nationally, especially when considering that teams from power states such as Texas, Ohio and Florida will be playing 14 games or more.

The additional game is a proving ground for the team - and an opportunity that Toal welcomes.

"We challenge our kids to be the best they can be," he said. "Being able to play this extra game is another opportunity to prove that."

En route to its 2009 national championship, Don Bosco defeated Concord (Calf.) De La Salle at home and went to Prattville (Ala.) High and won.

This season, the team already is scheduled to play the front end of two home-and-home series with a trip to Florida to play Bradenton Manatee and hosting Mission Viejo (Calif.) High.

The third game could be a tipping point when comparing strength of schedules later in the season.

Boston (Mass.) Boston College High was believed to be a potential opponent but the talks did not progress as expected.

Until then, Toal said his phone lines are open and, until the schedule is filled, the rest of the offseason is on hold.

"We talked about doing some 7-on-7's," he said. "But if we have to raise funds for another potential out-of-state game, we can not travel for those kinds of events."

With many teams having schedules settled, it will only become more difficult to finish the schedule.

St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland, OH. It's a powerhouse, at least in Ohio. 10 state championships in the past 25 years or something like that. 3 national championships... etc.

St. Joes Prep In Philly. Solid team. I think Huggins team beat them last year. I considered going here but it is located in a bad neighborhood in west philly so decided to go to Devon Prep instead

Kirk Herbstreit thinks he may know of a decent high school defense... though the offense may be up to you..

Have them play Lasalle College High School. Not a far drive and would be a good game. LSCHS just played Bergen this year. Prep has lost to Lasalle for the past three years now!

SouthLake Carrol in Dallas, TX

Or Katy High School from Katy TX...suburb of Houston. Southlake gets all the publicity, but Katy has had more State Championships in the last decade.

Ironman a graduate from DBP. Very cool. Mr. Toal has done an incredible job with that football program, as with Hackensack and River Dell before he came to Don Bosco. I hope they don't let him go, because it will be hard to replace him. There are a bunch of Florida schools that would be a great game for Prep.

Brockton High (MA) is always looking to play quality opponents. They had a game lined up with SPP (Savon Huggins) last year but that fell through. Might be worth a look up - not sure if they're going to be as good this year as they were supposed to be last year.

Yep. Katy is the shizzle. Up until '08 (the last year the site I visited had recorded) Katy had played in 8 of the past 15 state championships in the big division (Texas 5-A) and won 5 of them. This past year they lost by 3 to Pearland(?) the state champs - a school I never heard of.

I ended my sentence prepositionally with.

Just down the road from me is a school that is pretty solid. South Panola High School. That school is a football factory in Mississippi. They have trouble finding games every 3rd year. (we do 2yr contracts in MS).

BC was always the premier school in NJ, until Toal took over the prep program. I went to BC as a freshman. It would be great to see them on top again.

They just poached Bosco's Offensive Coordinator for the HC job. Maybe he will be able to get them to a level where a true rivalry exists again. I admit, it would be best to have both schools great, the rivalry between those two North Jersey schools is unmatched around those parts.

It was always Bergen and St. Joe's when I was in high school. I think Prep has taken it to a whole new level recently. It really would be great to see them all battling in the top of the national rankings at the same time again. If the new coach can bring the same philosophy that Mr. Toal brings to the game, BC has a shot to make it competative again. I think Toal just gets the most out of his kids anywhere he has coached. Then he leaves and those programs turn to **** again. When I was a junior at Paramus High, one of the worst football schools in history, we had a shot at Toal. He took the Hackensack job instead and within two years they were a national power. He left for Bosco and they went right back in the basement of group 4 football.

I doubt Toal will go anywhere for a while, Nunzio was a big loss for the Ironmen, but they will get by without him. It will be interesting to see if they can make the Bergen Bosco game a rivalry again. It sure as hell isnt a rivalry now since it is so one sided.

GO IRONMEN!! GO IRISH!!

You should look at eastern PA. While none are really as storied or successful as Don Bosco, Delaware Valley played some decent California team in Boston and beat them last season. Just look up the AAAA top ten teams in PA, one of the best teams in PA will play them I'm sure.

Sidenote: was in Waco Texas for a weekend and heard the loud drums from the stadium nearby, so I wandered over and watched the game. Forget who was playing (Waco High vs. San Angelo?), but the stadium, the crowd, the facility, the entire atmosphere was unbelievable. It was a regular season game.

Caught part of a game in El Paso Texas. It was a local neighborhood, rather insignificant district rivalry game. Crowd anticipation was so big, game had to be moved to Sun Bowl. Maybe 25-30,000 folks there. For a friggen neighborhood rivalry. Weather was maybe in the 20s. Yep, El Paso can get cold. 0 degrees a couple weeks ago and below zero with wind chill. In the desert. Imagine that...

Here in Cali, I was in a rather large town and went to watch a local playoff game. Weather was moist and slightly chilly. I think the crowd included me and maybe a few parents. No band, and I can't remember seeing any cheerleaders for either team.

I haven't been to enough games in Cali to compare to Texas, but goodness...

I hear ND practiced at Socorro High in El Paso for the Sun Bowl. Do a google and check out that stadium. Unreal.

EDIT: OK, I googled it for you. Horse shoe stadium. This pic shows the dressing room (I think) at the top, but the stadium wraps around and is a work of art.

Texas/Football/Religion.

Do the proceeds from the collection basket go to the recruitment funds of Texas, Baylor, Rice, Texas A&M, TCU, etc. depending on denomination?

[Football-religious denomination, not currency denomination ... though higher currency denominations may come into play when it comes to "indulgences."]

Bring them to Mishawaka and let the Penn Kingsmen send them whimpering and licking their wounds all the way back to New Joisey. (Yeah, I drank some Kool-Aid tonight. But, both Braxton Cave and I are Kingsmen, so gotta be a little bit cocky--man, I love seeing that filter work!)

The average home game in my tiny Michigan town usually draws about 1,500 people, with probably 3,000 at homecoming. It's a good place to socialize for old-timers/high schoolers.
