I will be moving to Mississippi in early May for a three month internship down near Jackson. Obviously I know it's going to be totally different than Michigan but does anyone have any attractions, restaurants, etc. I should check out while down there near the Jackson/Canton area? Or anything to help a 22 year old Yankee survive down south? How much different is it than the north, really?

Thanks y'all !

Maybe try Soulshine in Flowood. The one in Nashville is pretty good.

And yes, it will be different down there than from MI. For starters, it will be summertime...and a whole helluva lot hotter and steamier than anything you're used to up there. If you're into music, particularly blues or traditional blues-based rock and roll, there are some good venues to hear that.

That's all I got.

It's been years since I have been to Jackson but if you like really, really good steak, you have to try Tico's Steakhouse in Ridgeland. It used to be fantastic. They cook the strip in butter sauce like Ruth's Chris.

You have to venture to Oxford and see Ole Miss if you have a weekend free.

As to the bolded - LOL. You are in for a treat.

Thanks, I'll have to check that out.

That comment wasn't meant to be taken as you took it. Just looking for people's opinions on how much different it is.

Good luck finding anything healthy to eat... They fry everything. I have spent a lot of time in Mississippi and Jackson is pretty run down. They do have a Walter Payton statue next to Jackson State U.

No, no - I just mean that Jackson is going to be very, very, very different than MI. I liked Jackson when I used to visit there, and I love living in the south, but there are very real cultural differences.

On the tea comment. If you just order "tea" it will be sweet tea(with a ton of sugar). If you want unsweetened tea you must order it that way and then they will know you are from the north!

The tea thing would get me... not a sweet tooth guy at all... and not a fan of sweet tea... BUT I love tea. Just give me reg brewed tea with ice and a lemon... nothing more.

Have been to Arkansas but that is it... need to get to the South sooner than later, just to see it all.

I lived in Gautier for 3 years. It's in between Pascagoula and Biloxi. There's some good places to gamble in Biloxi. I know that's further south than Jackson, but if you have a long weekend you won't be stuck in Jackson.

The heat and humidity can be stifling, so you best be prepared.

Yes we do! I'm telling ya, nothing better than fried catfish & hush puppies with sweet tea! I'm up in the Northeast corner of the state, but I go down to Jackson for all the State championships. I coach track & we should qualify several for state, so if you will be there in May, we can get together & bash the Sec over some fine fried cuisine!

Also some gambling boats in Vicksburg. It's not but about 45 min away

I moved from Long Island, NY to Meridian, MS for 4 years. I've recently just returned to the island.

The heat in that area only gets uncomfortable for about 6 weeks in July to August. There are a lot of tornadoes and thunderstorms though.

I didn't think Jackson or Meridian offered much outside of the generic malls/movie theaters and restaurants. If you do a little research you'll find some chill blues bars and what not, if that's what you're into.

The people are nice, there is no traffic and everything just seems to move at a slower pace.

Being in the center of the state I would suggest taking short road trips on the weekend.

Biloxi - Gambling/Partying
Oxford - Ole Miss (Also a beautiful area)
Starkville - Miss St
Gulfport - Fishing/Partying/Gambling/Beach
Pensacola
New Orleans - (A very short road trip for such an awesome time)

I have 3 rules for you to survive your 1st year:

1. Eat whatever is put in front of you. If you don't know what it is, don't ask, just eat. Chances are it will be good.
2. Yard work should be done before 10 am or after 6pm. ALWAYS. Learn to siesta during the summer.
3. The South is slow. Like mind-numbing slow. So you had better slow your roll and adapt. This goes for stop lights, waitresses, and work. or any other environment you might be expected to wait for something.

Good luck:)

Get some insect repellant.

Hey, we southerners aren't that bad...or that easy to repel.

It is a lot different in the social interaction that takes some getting used to. I spent 26 years about an hour outside of Philly where people walk with their head down, barely look at each other and only talk to each other if you know them. If they don't know you, you assume they want something.

Sooo...down south people started talking to me everywhere. My natural Yankee inhibition usually kicked in and I shied away as quickly as I could. Plus everybody gives a "hi" or head nod to everyone else. If you don't, they know you for a Yankee right away.

People really are goodhearted and do a lot to help each other, although of course there are exceptions to everything. And as a history buff who wrote a novel on the siege of Vicksburg, I would suggest you take advantage of that and visit the city and the battle scenes.

And, yes, the pace of life is probably the thing that is hardest to get used to. I have gotten so used to it now, I drive people crazy when I go back north but I wouldn't change it for the world. Been in Tennessee 20 years and have no plans to leave.

Read Twain's A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court and then forget it.

Watch as many Andy Griffith reruns as you can.

"Grits is a corn product" and tasty, too. Think polenta with a drawl.

Fried catfish and hush puppies are a treat. I'm not sure if it was proper, but I dipped the puppies in honey when I lived in FL.

Stock up on antiperspirant.

If you need to wear sport coat or suit, DO NOT wear anything with a hint of wool.

I'll stop now ...

People are nice.

Summers are hot and humid.

The pace is slower because people have more time. Most don't commute an hour or so each way and don't have to fight for a parking space, or a table at lunch.

Tea does come with sugar.

"Fine" food usually means fast or fried.

Bige is right fried catfish is scrumptious.

Do not say, "that's not how we do it up north!" nobody cares how you do it Michigan, California, NY or Georgia. This is where you live and how it's done here.

Jackson somewhere in the Top 125 -150 cities so your not gonna find the night life of the Big City. That said, Jackson has the Arts. There is an international Ballet Competition held every 4 years in Jackson. It will be held this year.

If a young women casually says,"Hey!" she's saying hello. "Hey" back is an acceptable response.

I'ved lived in Alabama since Bear was still coaching and haven't been asked for a passport this millennium.

Enjoy the adventure.
