So many different possibilities for thism
Obviously it was planned more than a day or two in advance.

This is so sad. The videos that were put on social media make Dallas look like an actual war zone. It makes me cringe knowing that a majority of those cops were a huge, immediate disadvantage since they were dealing with two snipers on rooftops and they had nothing but handguns to defend themselves. I just really hope that this was the incident America needed to finally solve the police/civilian problems they have had for the last 6 years or so.

I have a lot of respect for how this particular piece of the story was handled by all parties. The police received tips and posted a picture of Mr. Hughes as a person of interest. Seeing the picture and knowing he was innocent, Mr. Hughes turned himself in to police custody. After questioning him and realizing they had the wrong guy in a very chaotic situation, he was released.

I feel for the guy. I understand it was a chaotic situation, but his face is still being plastered on Social Media.

So it's cool in Texas for people to just walk around with a rifle? Is that a thing that is common to see in Texas?

He's no victim. He's getting exactly what he wanted when he strapped that rifle to his shoulder.

This reminds me of Detroit back in the 60's. Prayers for the deceased and their families. Hoping this incident is what it takes for everyone to come together.

Open carry. Guess it's pretty common in Texas to walk around with rifles.

I'll bet dollars to donuts that this was a 2nd amendment group get together. They happen here in PA as well and they pull the same thing with their guns.

Maybe I'm just a yuppie product of the Northeast, but I think it's insane and somewhat comical that anyone would choose to do that. What a gun crazy country we live in.

Very well could have been. Also saw someone on Twitter saying that it's completely normal for people to be seen carrying guns in Dallas

My father, my father-in-law, and nearly all of my closest friends are gun nuts. I'm talking arsenals and museum-worthy collections.

None of them would ever feel the need to over-compensate like that in public haha. A proper concealed carry is the way to go. Anything else just screams "LOOK AT ME!" in a way that doesn't float my boat.

(For the record, that's how I feel about all things in life, and not just in terms of needing to carry a giant gun in public; if you are making an overly-boisterous show of [thing/idea] for no reason, that's just not a personality trait that I'm down with)

Tend to agree. In an open carry state, or any state for that matter it is one thing to have a handgun holstered or concealed if you are going into a situation where you could potentially have to defend yourself, which ultimately is the intent of allowing citizens to own firearms. It is an entirely different deal when you go into a potentially hostile situation wearing a camo shirt with a large rifle strapped over your shoulder...if nothing else it makes your average citizen who is not used to being around firearms feel VERY uncomfortable and uneasy....in light of the whole situation i can only imagine how the officers working security to protect these folks felt when this guy walks by them looking like he ready for combat at an event to basically protest the police. Horrible judgment on this guys part

Carrying pistols sure, many people do mostly CC. But to have an Ak and a pistol grip shotgun slung across your back at a fast food place is screaming look at me for a reason.

Here's the tweet I was referring to

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">A) it was not loaded. B) this is an open carry state, I've seen an AR-15 while trying to get some lunch. <a href="https://t.co/4dH2wOtjmM">https://t.co/4dH2wOtjmM</a></p>— Ms. Lee (@LyndsayALee) <a href="https://twitter.com/LyndsayALee/status/751270007527530496">July 8, 2016</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

To clarify, I agree with what you are saying. Just saw this and they make it sound like it's a pretty common occurrence.

You're from PA. We have an open carry law as well. I've seen guys walking in town with a rifle on their back.

Then again, they are usually clad in camo/orange and it's Deer Season.

Yeah those kinds of meet ups are quite common.
I see at least one a month scheduled on a firearm forum I'm a member at and that's just PA. Other states obviously have their own forums.
Personally I don't have a problem with OC, but I think OC of a rifle or shotgun is effing stupid.
Plus that AK does have a mag inserted so we can't say for sure it's unloaded and that shotgun has an internal mag.
Oh and it's TX lets face it they are a little off down there.

Technically there is no law on OC in PA. Unless you're in Philly. Then you just need a LTCF for it.
But the Philly cops have and will make your life hell.

I was just about to add this to my post. It's Texas, it's completely different down there.

The Free State Project people in New Hampshire have open carry litter clean-up days. They volunteer and pick up trash along the highways to demonstrate to the government that free people will take care of their communities if left alone. Local police often work alongside them.

Cmon, man --- you know deer season doesn't count.

I've never seen an open carrier before in Philly.

Odds are you won't Philly is notoriously difficult for even issuing a LTCF let alone their stance on guns locally. They may not be able to ban guns in the city like they wanted to, but they will make your life hell for OC.

I'm going to guess he didn't go thinking he was going to be a person of interest in the shooting of multiple police officers.
