If the Death Star is capable of hyperspace travel, why do they align themselves so poorly and allow the Rebels time to save themselves? Why not just show up and shoot the damn moon?

Why are lightsabers not explained? Why isn't it explained that certain small personal transports hover over the ground even though they aren't running? Why can Kylo Ren stop a blaster bolt in mid air? Why do some shields act as solid entities, while others are invisible and don't affect solid objects?

Y'all keep ignoring the fact that we have an OT. My complaints are not about the believability of what happens in this universe. It's about whether it's believable in relation to what we know from the OT, or about how it makes the OT characters look stupid or pathetic.

The Force Awakens didn't really have these problems because we didn't have Jedi doing crazy ass shit like Force projecting themselves and completely inanimate objects across the universe. We didn't have a Jedi with Max 30 years training doing things that the Emperor or Yoda with hundreds of years of training never thought to do or were incapable of doing.

I understand the contextual nature of your concerns.

I'm just trying to illustrate that you can nitpick the OT in the same vein, based on what those movies establish.

If they establish hyperspace travel, why is the Death Star always out of position? Why not just show up exactly where you need to be? Cosmic entities in the way? Just alter your course and show up on the opposite side, or a bit further away.

If I watched the OT, I could pick out a bunch of examples that you should probably take issue with, if you take issue with the hyperspace battering ram.

Why is the milk blue?
What is Beggar's Canyon? Why does that translate to Luke being a great X-wing Pilot?
Why is the emperor so powerful?
Why does Vader sound like James Earl Jones?
Why does Vader Force-choke one guy, but physically choke other guys?

Call back to ANH where they drank blue milk on Tatooine.

I know lol, I was just poking fun at all of the questions that could be asked.

Haha, I know. Everyone is losing their shit about blue milk scene and it clearly served two purposes:

A nod to Luke's drink in ANH

A humorous view into Hermit Luke's daily routine of survival as well as countering his status as galactic legend.

I'm dying at people attempting to use science to defend/attack plot elements from a space fantasy.

This movie is targeted for "all audiences" and you guys are over here breaking it down like this is some sort of Nova special, or Gravity... Lol

Poe: I need to blow up this last surface cannon so we can blow up this Dreadnaught.

Leia: Fall back dumbass. It's not worth doing this if it kills you.

Poe destroys cannon.

Leia: Alright let's gooooooooo. Sacrifice the rest of our fleet to blow up the Dreadnaught.

Later, Leia: Poe you are a damn fool. You can't just rush in there and blow stuff up.

Later, Leia: Oh shit we are being tracked. We can't jump out of here!

Poe: Permission to jump in my XWing and blow shit up????

Leia: Hell yeah!!!

Poe does not blow shit up because they get wrecked. Leia is unconscious

Holdo to Poe: Leia is my mentor. Believe me that what she would want right now is for you to sit the fuck down and let me handle this shit.

Poe: wut you gonna do woman?

Holdo: I sure as hell am not going to tell you something that a codebreaker halfway across the Galaxy can figure out.

Later, Holdo: Hell no you aren't going to try and sneak two people onto that ship. That would put out entire fleet at risk.

Poe: uh, why would that put everyone at risk?

Holdo...well not everyone. Just the two people on the ship because I am about to fly this here ship right into that there ship. Because I am the best.

In reality, the prequels, which we are stuck with have totally skewed everything about the OT and also ignoring the things setup in the EU are also causing problems:

1. Jedi training is supposed to occur over decades and only toddlers are supposed to start it, so Luke's training level and time in the OT is absurd relative to the prequels and excluding EU.
2. Look at all the abilities granted to Prequel Jedi's as well as those in anime and cartoon's, its WAAAAAYYYYY above what Luke ever did. Not even sure one could call Luke the greatest Jedi ever if you include the prequels and ignore the EU. By all accounts he is not powerful, dabbled in the Dark side, and ultimately is a failed student and master.
3. The EU really did a great job grounding the OT but that is no more

More military stupidity:

Why hold the doors open until you can see enemy fighters? If the answer is because they were hoping Finn would be alive then why open fire on the ship?

Hux tells Poe there will be no surrender or mercy for the base but doesn't just shoot him out of the air.

Why aren't transport ships already fueled up? If they are supposed to be emergency getaway vehicles shouldn't they be ready to go in case of...an emergency?

The prequels being bad don't excuse the sequels.

And Luke's lack of training and age possibly explain why he doesn't have the crazy fighting abilities that the Jedi have in the prequels. He doesn't even have someone to spar with. Vader is similarly limited due to his injuries.

Congratulations you just deciphered the major theme of the movie. These characters are all flawed and all make mistakes and all fail over and over. Some of their failures even have consequences like getting half of their friends killed.

Have a little fun man. You don't need to defend everything.

I'm not defending everything. The movie does have some issues. But when you've seen it twice and still have missed one of the central themes I feel the need to point it out.

You can't excuse bad writing by calling it a theme.

Wait, does anyone think Holdo DIDN'T suck?

I HHHAAAAAAATTTTTTTTEEEEE Laura Dern. She is terrible at delivering lines. Not sure why she even acts.

Holdo should have been a military person IMO but maybe they were playing off of Mon Mothma's type character. Anyway, no I liked her less than Rose, who I agree is a worthless character like Biggs Darklighter ultimately was.

Here is Luke after Biggs dies LOL:

No. She seemed completely out of place and miss cast. She needed to be more of a gruff badass that you could believe actually hated Poe and might have been a dick just to be mean to him. That would help explain hiding the plan from him for no apparent reason. She seemed like a weird Luna Lovegood ripoff.

I know she's an EU book character that's friends with Leia or something but it just didn't work.

She sucked as a leader, but I thought her ramming into Snoke's ship was a badass scene, and thus she gets some residual credit from me.

Also, she is strangely attractive to me. Don't @ me.

(Might be the purple hair and slender figure. I'm 100% NOT an anime guy though. Weird.)

Should've been Ackbar tho.

She was there as a foil for Poe, and I liked Poe's character development. You didn't want Leia playing the bitch role.

But she wasn't a bitch. I would've respected her if she was a bitch.

She was just... there. Taking up space on the screen.

Another thing...

Why doesn't Luke just TELL everyone that he is stalling so they can get out??? If the point is to save your friends, it seems to me that you wouldn't want them sitting there for 5 minutes trying to figure out what the heck you were doing. Just bad writing again. Or wait is that a theme?

Imagine the amount of screen time required to properly, address via dialogue..... all the writing criticisms you have raised.

Fairly certain everyone understood they needed to escape while Luke did his thing and it wasnt spoken.... lol

Respectfully, we have achieved the level of petiness I knew was coming.

Did you miss the scene where Finn wanted to run out and help Luke but Poe said WAIT...he....wants to give us time to escape...?

Instead, have Luke say "find a way out of here" and you actually shorten the movie and clean up the writing.

I thought she was a traitor initially. The whole movie kept me off balance. I had bought into the whole grey jedi narrative and the movie totally threw me for a loop.
