I'm not okay with how mediocre that movie was.
The Leia scene may be the worst part of any Star Wars movie. Just abysmal.
The pacing was like a rollercoaster the entire time. What happened to character development? I'm guessing it went out the window when Disney decided that more characters and more action figure sales beat storytelling. Did we need Captain Phasma to have useless roles in two movies? Did they need any of that casino crap? Did they need the hacker/criminal goon? Did we need that Asian gal in this movie? They spend so much damn time showing us new action figures that they don't have the time (over two and a half hours!) to develop any characters.

That was the consequence for using the force projection powers or whatever they're called. Kylo mentioned it to Rey in one of their very first interactions.
3 was on TV the other day and it's so fucking bad. 8 is way better than it IMO.

I remember 3 being the only mediocre one of the bunch, whereas 1 was bad and 2 was awful. Maybe I'm wrong.

3 was the best of the prequels for sure but it still had terrible writing and some horrific CGI. I think 8 is a really good movie with a few obvious flaws, whereas 3 was a terrible movie with a few cool ideas.

It's pretty crazy to see how people that consider themselves Star Wars fans can see a movie and have completely different takes on it. Sometimes I think people build up the "I want this" to happen and they forget they are just simply there to be entertained. With that being said, I was entertained.
The humor in the movie, at first glance, seems a little clunky. After thinking about it I think it's because of who it comes from. I thought the humor was very Star Wars like except that it didn't come from Han Solo. That made it a bit weird. On reflection I am totally good with it and glad it was part of the movie.
I really didn't like the Leia scene while it was happening but it was completely worth it to have the scene of Luke and Leia together one last time. That was very necessary. I hate that there won't be an opportunity for Leia to go out in dramatic fashion the way both Han and Luke did. That had to be the plan for the next movie, right?
No other actor/actress has been cast better than Rey. Daisy is perfect for that part(I hope it does ruin her for other acting opportunities).
I am so glad they gave Finn a love interest. I didn't want there to be any chance that there would be that kind of romantic tension between Finn and Rey. That would have ruined the relationship tension that Rey and Kylo have. They are doing a great job with those two and keep you on the hook for what will happen next.
Kylo Ren is a great character.
I loved the little boy at the end and how the subtle movement of the broom to his hand foreshadowed
I was very pleased with the way they handled the Luke and Rey scenes.
Does Anakin ever come back and spend time with Kylo? I hope so, but not sure if that will happen.

I liked Poe's opening bit with Hux. I laughed.
Luke brushing his shoulder off? That was too much (and outdated) modern pop culture for me that kind of made me wince, but I don't get offended when Star Wars films have flaws, so I can live with it haha.
I'll continue to go to bat for Leia's Force Life Support until the end of my days. We have no idea what she's done over the course of 35 years to foster that type of power... perhaps Luke taught her a few tricks to keep up her sleeve for when she needed them the most. Perhaps she's been doing mental Force exercises in all of her free time in case she ever needed a Force pull. I don't know the answer, but being offended about someone using the Force unexpectedly in a Star Wars film seems odd to me, especially when that person has very clearly been shown to be Force sensitive in the past.
And I'd argue that there's more character development among Rey, Luke and Kylo in this film than there was for anyone in the entirety of the original trilogy. Luke went from "Whiny Kid" to "Wise-ish Jedi" over the course of three films. His fluctuations in TLJ were to greater ranges than that. The other greatest character development in the original trilogy was Han going from "I'm a badass and don't care" to "I kind of like these people so I'll help... sometimes"

The problem with the Leia scene isn't that she used the Force IMO. We've known she has the force since Return of the Jedi. The problem is how it looked on film. The CGI was trash.

That's a reasonable take.
Guardians of the Galaxy did it way better with Quill and Gamora. I don't really know what it's supposed to look like when someone is freezing to death in outer space, but I assume Guardians got it better with the blood rushing into the head/face/brain.

No joke: somebody posted a meme the other day on reddit that spoiled several things. I thought it was a complete joke because they mentioned that Leia sh*t and I thought "oh there's no way that would happen. This must for teh lulz", boy was I wrong.

Do what? Pull objects towards one another? That seems to be pretty basic Force stuff.
One artistic decision that I think they'll regret is that Leia's hair and clothing were perfectly still. It makes the CGI look extra fake, even though it's probably TECHNICALLY correct in the vacuum of space.

As of right now, how I'd start the next movie: It begins with Leia's funeral, with the alliances that she forged now tenuous with her death. The new leaders of the Resistance know that they have a limited time frame to make a statement and come up with a daring plan to strike at the First Order's secret base or whatever

Also gotta give Kylo Ren time to establish himself as Supreme Leader, that way he can do some fucked up shit and they can write it into the opening crawl. Also gives time for Hux's distaste to fester.
Still not sure how I think they'll handle Leia/Fisher's death. It'd be a bummer if they wrote her out in the opening crawl. I'm starting to think it's more likely that they'll open the movie with her funeral or something, or that she'll bite the bullet in an early scene where they can use CGI without it being distracting for too long. I doubt they have enough cut material from TFA and TLJ to make a meaningful story arc about her demise.

There really isn't one, unless they filmed a different version of her character's death for TLJ and decided to scrap it... but that seems very unlikely, and would affect the writing/story for the next film in dictating its direction.

I'm a little bummed about Snoke. What we know from the Aftermath trilogy, Bloodline, and Battlefront II is that Palpatine left secret orders with some key people that if the Empire failed to protect him, the Empire didn't deserve to survive. So they essentially sabotaged themselves at Jakku while a few remnants gathered in the Unknown Regions to form the nascent First Order. There's a gap in there where Snoke rose to power, and I was intrigued to learn more about it. Now I don't care so much. Because rip.

Maybe they're saving his story for a "Snoke" trilogy of books.
Any dude with that fashion sense (luxurious gold robes FTW) and talent for interior decorating (dat throne room) needs more shine.
He was much more about the eccentricities and finer things as "Supreme Leader" than Palpatine was as "Emperor." That makes me think he was some borderline-regular humanoid alien, with Force sensitivity and a decent station in life, that stumbled into some secret Sith teachings and ultimately filled the power vacuum. He couldn't let go of his vanity once he came into power.

A Wrinkle in Time looks SO bad. Like, John Carter plus Tomorrowland levels of bombing. It's like they took the Johnny Depp Alice in Wonderland and put Oprah in it for some reason. Get your shit together, Disney.

No, but his powers fall towards the "Dark Side" even though he mentions "balance" a lot, so I assume he honed his Force sensitivity via Sith teachings/training.
If he weren't operating from Sith teachings, he probably wouldn't feel the need to use Force lightning against Ren.
He uses powers we usually see from the Sith... that doesn't mean he's a Sith.

Leather, automatic recliners are trash. They are uncomfortable and create weird viewing issues as you go further back, because the headrest doesn't adjust.
I'd rather be in a standard, bouncy, cloth-laden theater seat and adjust myself based on years of theater training.

I went to the new theater in the yuppie part of town for Wonder Woman and it was the first theater with those recliner seats. They f*cked it up somehow because instead of just reclining, the back was leaning forward a little bit. I found it incredibly uncomfortable and reclining actually exacerbated the problem.

I did... it made perfect sense as a nice curveball to throw at the viewers.
Everyone spent two years wondering who her parents were, preparing themselves for the cliche that it would be Luke, hoping it would be something else more unexpected and epic.
Making them some drunk nobodies makes sense in terms of Rey's character, I think. She has no predisposition to aggression or light. She has no internal conflict based on heritage.
When she was meditating during her first lesson with Luke, she was at peace when she felt the balance inside of her. She tapped into the balance of everything, even the dark part of the island. Luke was frightened that she didn't resist it, but why would she? She doesn't know anything, either consciously or within her DNA as a Force user.
She is a blank slate, being used by the Force. Maybe she is the chosen one?
Now that I type all this, she's probably Kylo's sister.
