I have no problem with laying our recent struggles against UM at Diaco's feet. If we beat them this year, Kelly will likely end his career 2-3 against the skunkbears (somewhat annoying); but he'll have won the two most important games.

But goddamn do we need this win. This is the first game of the Kelly era where I feel like a loss will be an unforgivable letdown.

I agree, I think Diaco caused a large part of those Michigan woes. We've seen in the past where Diaco struggled to make halftime and late game adjustments against teams like Navy and Michigan. Aside from a brilliant destruction of Denard in 2012, it was poor defensive game planning and a lack of successful adjustments that resulted in the late game heroics of Michigan in 2010 and 2011, as well as a poor job bottling Gallon and Gardner in 2013. 2010 was probably somewhat out of his hands given the fact Crist missed much of the game and our backups weren't ready, but I doubt the outcome would have been much different given the defense.

This certainly is a very important year though when it comes to Michigan. I imagine both teams will see each other in the future, but probably not before I turn 40...maybe even 50. I'm hoping BVG comes up with a brilliant plan and the team is able to execute.

Understatement of the day. 76-3 over a two year span....ouch. Weis also had a problem with MSU....2-3 with one of the wins coming from one of the worst late game meltdowns I have ever witnessed. I think it is fair to say that Charlie generally struggled with everyone, just like Ty.

Michigan State was up and down. Weis could have easily gone 3-2 against them given the overtime game in 2005. You'd like to do better against a rival, but going .500 against a good team isn't struggling I think. I was going to say that Charlie struggled much less with our regular opponents than Willingham did, but it's actually fairly even between the two. Willingham always sticks out more I guess because his teams got progressively worse during his tenure, and he had some of the more lopsided losses in our history:

Ty vs. Michigan 2-1 (The one loss being one of the most lopsided losses in Notre Dame history at the time at 38-0).
Weis vs. Michigan 2-3 (One game was the buzzer beater that began a streak of Michigan comebacks. There was also another 38-0 lopsided loss in there).
Advantage Ty, although how he pulled that off I can't guess. More than anything that fluke of a 2002 season helped prop up his record in this rivalry.

Ty vs. Michigan State 2-1
Weis vs. Michigan State 2-3
Advantage Ty. More 2002 heroics help prop his record up. I'd give that 2002 win to Arnaz Battle, Pat Dillingham, and the Gerome Sapp before Willingham though.

Ty vs USC - 0-3 (All losses coming at 30 point deficits or greater, all embarrassing against our biggest opponent)
Weis vs. USC 0-5
Advantage neither, although Weis certainly kept it competitive some years and not always embarrassing.

Ty vs. Purdue 1-2 (Ugly loss in 2004, lone win coming in that 2002 season)
Weis vs. Purdue 4-1
Advantage Weis.

Ty vs. Boston College 0-3
Weis vs. Boston College 1-2
Advantage Weis.

There are a few others, but I wouldn't throw them in here. For example, Weis had one loss in his 5 years to Stanford while Willingham never lost to the Cardinal. However, Stanford was a radically better team by the end of Charlie's term given the fact Harbaugh had completed Stanford's turn around by 2009. During Willingham's tenure I imagine Stanford was still trying to recover from his own influence.

Damn it, why do cool people sometimes have to root for shitty teams?

Grew up watching Reading Rainbow in the 80s. Looks like Levar Burton is trying to resurrect that show in the form of an app and provide it free of charge to schools. Now that is cool. On the other hand, he appears to be a Michigan fan and graduated from USC's drama school...so now he's dead to me.

I believe his daughter goes, or has gone to Michigan.

It actually says that he is getting high quality kids as well as the best four and five star talent out there. In the spirit of the article, I chose not to use italics.

Are you kidding? This was a serious piece of journalism. That is why they used Peppers as an example of a high character kid . . .

some chump commmentator on the article:

Do you think Alabama has a bunch of high character guys? Do you think Urban at OSU and the players he had at Florida are high character guys? What about Les Miles’ players at LSU? I agree that it is important to have intelligent players, but when it comes down to it the most talented teams are going to excel. I for one am kind of sick of hearing about getting a "Michigan Man" screw that. I want whoever is going to give Michigan the best opportunity to win National Championships…not just BIG Ten championships either. Michigan needs to get with the times of college football and back off of their traditional ways somewhat. Character guys are great and great for the players that are like that! I don’t intend to sound like I want a bunch of "thugs" getting into trouble off of the field or anything, just saying look at the schools that win titles and that Michigan needs to get with the times of college football.

this guy gets it...haha

Hoke specifically termed them in an interview, "right kind of guys."

RKGs for short.

Michigan men.

Like when the two WR's left for the NFL, and it was leaked that they got a 4 and a 6 or a 6 and an 8 on the Wonderlic. Someone asked how that could be, and what it meant. The answer was functional illiteracy.

Lewan was on Sirius XM Radio on Tuesday, and was asked how he thinks Gardner will perform in 2014.

"It really depends on how the team rallies around him; it depends on how his leadership skills develop," Lewan answered, as per MLive.com. "He does have a lot on his shoulders being quarterback at the University of Michigan. If he can get there and do the right things, I think the sky is the limit for him."

HE'S GETTING A FABRICATED EXTRA YEAR!!! I CERTAINLY HOPE HE CAN HANDLE THE PRESSURE OF COMPETING IN A MEDIOCRE BIG INTEGER BY NOW.
