I do think you try Knowles and at the very least try to make OSU pump more resources into retaining him.

It'll likely be Mickens but I'd be interested to see who else gets an interview. The postion should be incredibly coveted at this point. Last four guys:

1) Left on his own terms to become the highest paid DC in the country, is now a P5 head coach;

2) Left on his own terms to head coach his alma mater in the SEC,

3) Became the HC of Notre Fuckin Dame,

4) Was one of, if not the, highest paid DC in college football and left on his own terms to be DC in the NFL.

Like damn, basically everyone should want on this train.

Edit: Plus you'll be working under a HC who everybody likes working with, who just got extended, and is incredibly popular both with his school and nationally.

Not certain I'd choose either of them over Mickens but Tyler Santucci and the guy from IU would be worth a look. If Belichick and Saban turn us down.

Golden was fantastic here don’t understand his decision here. But it’s not my decision to make or question why he wanted to go back to the NFL.
IMO this isn't about the money. Most of these coaches have earned petty good salaries over the years. I don't know what his new salary will be compared to what he was making at ND, but the NFL is the pinnacle of competition. The mismatches are fewer and smaller. This could simply be that he wants the challenge or his personal goal is to be an NFL HC job which would be easier to obtain as an NFL DC.

Good luck to Al. Hate to see him go, but appreciate what he did to elevate the defense.

Got his son into ND and dipped less than a year later. Respect.
I'm sure the Bursar's office will get that bill out to him pretty damn quick since he's not longer an employee. lol

If Elston was so accomplished and you say, why has he never had a sniff of a DC position?
Good question. He's too busy being a great recruiter that can't ever be replaced, maybe?

Not the point. Two individuals, neither of whom has ever been a DC, are being compared. One has coached twice as long as the other and just spent his first year in the NFL after winning a National Championship last year. Don't tell me Mickens is more accomplished for coaching half as long and only coaching one position.

He never sold his house in Cincinnati. He lives down the street from Taylor and that's where all his roots, friends, and attachments are. His kids went to Cincinnati high schools. Notre Dame is a long commute. Just stays there in-season. I think this is the only job he would have left for. I don't know about you guys, but if I could take a job that let me be closer to my family, friends, etc. I would take it in a heartbeat. He probably felt torn all the time.

They're just jobs to these guys. It's work. A paycheck. At the end of the day, they do what is best for them and their families. They don't have decades of being a fan invested into anywhere they go.

Even for an alum like Weis, it was a job. Nothing more.

Does he have some deeper ties to Cincinnati? Is his wife from there or something? Because Golden only coached for the Bengals for two seasons before coming to Notre Dame (most of that was pretty deep Covid times, too, fwiw). He spent more time in Detroit, Miami, and Philly (not to mention Notre Dame), and is from New Jersey.

I'm sure he has a good relationship with Taylor but this feels mainly about challenging himself as an NFL DC than about the chance to live in the wonderland that is Cincinnati.

I don’t disagree with you but on one point. The ND job is really good, you have a great boss, great group of assistants and players that have really bought in. Paid pretty well from what we are told. And job security is top notch.

The NFL is less forgiving, the head coaching is all that. His overall record is under 500 and he has been there since 2019. His seat is getting warm. They play in a division that 2 others always end up in the playoffs. Just doesn’t seem like a great overall move.

Aren't the Bengals a franchise that doesn't really fire coaches for underperformance? And their current coach went to the SB. I can see why he has a long leash there. Or maybe Golden got some sort of promise he could stay regardless of what happens to Taylor after this year.

It's going to be lit when Al Washington gets the promotion and not Mickens.

I saw recently released VT DC Chris Marve's name mentioned. Former Vanderbilt player. Hokie defense was pretty good in 2023. Dropped off some this past year and Brent Pry had to make some firings to bide his time.

VT has now had back to back 6-6 regular seasons. Pry is going into year 4.

I think Co-DCs of the two is not out of the realm of likelihood
