Just never got the impression Al was going to be here more than a year or 2

So your comment has been something of a general consensus. Have there been any creditable rumors to this effect? Did I miss something?

To be fair I never thought Freeman would be the head coach when he first came here.

O pretty much go into coordinator hires with this mentality. If they're good then a bigger job is coming there way, if they're bad then they'll get pushed out. I would be shocked if a coordinator made it past year three at ND.

Thought it was interesting that on the II pod this week all three of them said they don’t believe Freeman would hesitate to make a change at OC if he felt it was necessary.

I think Golden will honor his 3 year contract, if they are as good as they are next year as this season it's in ND's court to keep him or not.

I could see a change at the OC in the off season rather than the DC.

ND is found four quality DCs in a row. They leave, you find another one. They will get quality candidates to apply for this job, considering how athletic the roster is right now... and it's Notre Dame.

I don't think he leaves for a HC job. He's not very young and he's already experienced that grind. How often to NFL teams hire a DC from the college level? Don't most prefer to promote from within or poach other NFL teams before they look to college ranks?

It’s also about fit so would probably depend on which NFL team would ask him to be DC.

He has (recently) spent years as an NFL assistant, though. And I think what he’s doing here as a DC will draw some NFL looks. Shutting down Ohio State and USC.

I’d agree NFL DC seems his most likely next move. Followed by G5 head coach where recruiting and such isn’t so intense. But not sure he doesn’t just stick with us if his other option is head coaching some meh MAC team.

He made Caleb Williams look like rubbish. There was no doubt his job was safe.

How long was Golden with the Bengals? Seven or eight years, right?
At this point he feels more like a “pro coach dabbling in college” than the other way around.

He was with the Lions from ‘16 to ‘19 and with the Bengals for ‘20/‘21.

If the Lou Anarumo gets an NFL head coaching job, you'd think Al Golden is going to be on his defensive staff. The guy was a finalist for the Arizona Cardinals job.

I don't really know what Golden's ambitions are but if I had to guess, he stays at ND or goes to the NFL as a DC. I highly doubt a G5 HC job interests him, and from afar where I sit it doesn't seem like a good fit.

No just the feeling I had since he’s been here but that’s not a hot take or anything. I think most fans don’t think he’ll be around much longer. Be happy to be wrong

Prister on the pod today said his thinking has changed and he thinks there's a good chance Golden is back. Prister was told by someone whose opinion matters it's a distinct possibility.

From my outside view, Rutgers and BC are having better than expected years. Unlikely to part with their coaches. Golden would like to return to NJ or the east coast. It will get interesting when Lou Anarummo gets an HC job if Golden goes to DC the Bengals or follows him.

I'd keep an eye on Syracuse. Babers is what he is, and if Syracuse doesn't go bowling this year, he could be terminated. I know Syracuse will never be a consistent ACC title level team, but Babers hasn't done much besides one great season.

Was thinking the same. They started out 4-0 and now they're 4-5.

I still think it's either stay at ND or NFL DC for Golden. Just guessing off of nothing concrete.

I doubt if Golden's work at ND is going to put him high up on many HC lists. His stint at Miami his the major item on his resume and that isn't going to help him at all.
Might be a fallback option if he really wants to go the low end school needs a coach route. But ND can (and probably already is) paying him more than the G5 head coaches are getting.
