Ho many teams need to leave for the GOR to just dissolve? What if the SEC and B1G both took 4? Or SEC/B1G/Big 12 all take 2?
2/3rds. 8 teams.

Don't know that there are 4 teams each that the SEC or B1G would want, tho.

Did they remove divisions last year or is this the first year without them?

He may very well destroy his program and his own legacy if this is how he intends to go forward.
That article is really badly written. The first three paragraphs set the tone for a great article about how Dabo hasn't used the portal or what his stance is on NIL. Instead it turns into a "who is D.J. Uiagalelei" article.

Mentioned this in the realignment thread, but I'm wondering if SMU buying their way to a seat at the table will do harm mostly to A&M and the other NIL heavy schools. I was wondering how this could impact ND, what do y'all think?

Feels like this is all just getting started. The balance of power is going to shift significantly and it could happen very fast. NIL, the portal, all of this money flying around means that people are not going to be patient for programs to get built and rebuilt.

I would think SMU, whose football program has been pretty much dead since the death penalty, would have enough patience to at least disrupt the short term NIL market for the money-up-front guys. Maybe I'm being way too optimistic but if you're resurrecting a dead program then pulling your funding after a year or two would be silly if they're not winning 10 games.

I think you are being very optimistic. 30 people putting together $100M isn't exactly a few family members cobbling together some money for a used Buick. They're going to want results. I don't think patience is a virtue people like that are willing to possess.

I don't think they'll pull the funding. they'll just fire coaches and get someone in who can get them where they want to go.

Nobody is getting 4-5 years to build anything anymore, and I think these coaches know it too. You're not even getting three years to do anything. The SMU and Texas Tech types will go from one guy to the next because the people actually pulling the strings are signing checks and not part of the universities.

SMU has the coffers to push their program forward. I have no idea the ceiling but they could be a top 25 program if they can convince some local talent to stay home. They are currently giving $36k per player on football and basketball roster. That's pretty good money for a school in a low-level conference. That article suggests SMU has a lot of money but money can't buy a contending squad. Look at TAMU.

Now they need to focus on culture.

There's really no reason SMU cant surpass TCU as a program within a decade. They (1) have more money (2) are better academically (3) are in the better DFW location (4) are in a better conference long term and (5) have similar historic success. They'll win their fair share of head to head recruiting battles immediately

The worst seems to be long behind them. If you look at the last 15 years they've gone to bowl games and such. Nothing is as dark as the post Death Penalty 1990s.

This^

Just drive around the Dallas area where SMU is located & it’ll be very clear how much $ resides in such a small area.

TCU has a larger endowment than SMU: $2.48 billion can $1.9 Billion. That’s a pretty size-able difference. $100 million is a massive amount in comparison. Definitely not sustainable, even more so if results aren’t realized immediately. That’s more than a 20th of their total endowment, which has taken years to amass.

I could even see moves like this backfiring. Administrations being frustrated by the money being funneled into the football program while the academics and university as a whole sees little attention. Especially if the football programs do poorest and fail to bring in revenue at all.

This puts things in a bit of perspective. Very big game for FSU. That 2018 game is still so fresh in my mind.

If you look at the replies to this tweet, one of the local drive-time sports radio guys debunked this by talking to fellow players who said nothing of the sort happened. Who knows?

On his Twitter when he announced his return he has a quote "The pursuit of excellence has no goalline." Not sure if he's being intentionally funny there. I just assume he's working on his 3rd doctorate at this point, excellence and all that.

Look at this meet n greet shit FSU has to raise money for their NIL fund. The place hosting it is a local joint that brings in bands and hosts other party events.

And now also, the Seminole Showcase

The Battle’s End was founded with the sole intention of building a sustainable, best-in-class NIL operation for Florida State’s student-athletes.
