Thanks for posting this. I remember them handing out the paper flags when we got to the stadium that day and holding them up. Sadly we didn't get the win that day, another loss to Sparty. Thanks, Ty Boob Davie! The win next year against Sparty was that much sweeter.

I turned 50 this year, so 9/11 is literally half a lifetime ago. I had gotten hired at my local fire department (started the next week) when the attacks happened. Two years later on 9/11, I was in the hospital watching my daughter be born. Ironically, she recently started working for American airlines as a FA. Tomorrow I'll be in Nashville at the annual stair climb. I'm older, it will hurt climbing 110 floors, but I'll get to see the familiar faces of the 343 FDNY member killed that day, as their pictures line the stairwell.

I used to treat the stair climb as a personal workout and a challenge. I don't know if it just feels like our society has become greedier and more selfish but I'm just looking forward to spending an hour or so looking at the pictures of men who put others first. Real men. Real leaders. I really hope I'm just getting older and more cynical and the world is as beautiful as I thought it was when I was young. Sorry for the depressing post. People don't forget what happened. It's just that time went on, people die, people are born who have only history to learn about, not remember. Few Americans today REMEMBER Pearl Harbor, but we can still honor those lost that day, just like 9/11.

New York hasn't forgotten, it has just evolved. Those who are upset that Mamdani is Muslim are bigger snowflakes than anyone else, I don't care if I get downvoted for that. He isn't a terrorist. He isn't a fundamentalist. He isn't Al-Qaeda. No one was ever upset like this at Japanese Americans holding office after Pearl Harbor. Grow up.

The biggest problem is his socialist policies. The fact that he's a Muslim who was caught on video yesterday giggling with AOC while they read the names of those murdered at WTC on 9/11 is just salt in the wound. Any nation who willingly imports foreigners whose policies and cultures clash with its own is moronic.

I was a Soph in HS when the attacks happened. Can remember it clear as it was 25 years ago. The first plane hit and every teacher in our school had the news on, just trying to figure out what happened. Nothing too alarming. It felt bigger but the uncertainty (maybe curiosity?) of what occurred outweighed the impact. But then the 2nd plane hit in real time. A collective gasp echoed throughout the brand-new 4 story HS. The world had effectively stood still. Moments later the Pentagon. Then United 93. It felt like every time we had a second to digest what happened, something else took the breath from us. 15yr old me didn't know what to think. We just watched and watched. Finally the school sent us home early once the real magnitude of the terrorist attacks came into view by lunch time.

My heart still hurts. I didn't lose anyone (thankfully), I barely have 6 degrees of separation from anyone near the towers. The closest I can get is I would eventually become an acquittance with someone that was in the Pentagon.

25 years later, I'm woke up by my 10 year old and 8 year old at 330 this morning. "Daddy we're scared. What if 9/11 happens again?" For some odd reason my body went back to that naive 15yr old at a high school in Niagara Falls. I felt the same pain again. I did what my parents eventually did when I got home. Just hugged them and said "we'll be ok buddy, don't worry." But the fear, the pain, the aftermath still remains.

I'm sorry for those who have lost. I hurt for the families and friends who had loved ones ripped away. Yesterday always hits hard. ❤️

With all the divisiveness in our country today, I do think that a lot of us lose sight of an important reality of 9/11. That is, that the terrorists did not distinguish between, nor care about, who they killed. They killed Muslims, Jews, Christians, black, white, Republicans, Democrats, young, old, men, and women all the same in these attacks. My hope is that we learn to be unified in recognizing it for what it was - evil - and that it was an indiscriminate attack on all of us. Even though we have differences of opinion, we are all still Americans. The victims of 9/11 did not get a choice in their fate, so honoring them as our fellow Americans, regardless of who they were in their time on Earth, is the least we can do. That is what we should never forget.

For whatever reason this 25th anniversary hit me much harder than expected and certainly much harder than other past years. I’m not sure if it was the prevalence of tons of videos of the attacks and immediate aftermath on Twitter or what, but the lead up to the 25th anniversary and then the day itself yesterday just filled me with both more sadness than I anticipated, and also somehow closure on the event and the world from then. The videos make me think of a world that seems like just yesterday and also like a lifetime ago. The stories of all the heroes from that day just make me sad thinking about the current state of the world. Perhaps I’m being pessimistic, but our society just seems so much more selfish and dark and divided now. Even 9/11 itself has become a dark humor punchline for some in my generation and the generation below me. The videos just made me sad not just for the horrible event that day, but also for a pre 9/11 world and society that we are never getting back.

I was talking to my coworker yesterday about how sad it is that it took something so horrific to (mostly) unite the country. With how divided we have become we both expressed doubt that the unity would approach post 9/11 levels under similar circumstances again.

We haven't forgotten 9/11, but we've forgotten 9/12. 9/11 brought us countless stories of heroism, selflessness and love for fellow man. On 9/12 we were inspired by their example and dedicated to being better versions of ourselves. And, for awhile we were better versions of ourselves.


Now, we (collectively ) still honor the sacrifices of 9/11 on 9/11, but from 9/12 - 9/10 the collective we revert to being the worse, rather than the better, angels of our nature.

Well, that's a scary and depressing fact.

I try to do my part and educate the youths about it each year, but ... learning about it 1 day a year is light-years away from living through it.

I promise you the response and outpouring of love and support would be the same if something catastrophic were to happen. Things change, life goes on, but interacting with people all day in the city yesterday gave me hope again. It’s why I hate politics. Most people are good folks just trying to get by.

This is the truth. It takes a tragedy like 9/11 for people to show how they really feel and their character. When the chips are down this country came together, politicians stop the division and actually showed they could work together. It just emphasizes how the rest of the time the government's purpose is to divide and keep us from unity so they can get our donations.
