Something had to have changed in the NIL department, right? I’ve been pretty bullish on Notre Dame’s NIL, and have said/thought it has been up there with the best. There’s so many live examples to prove it. But now they are far exceeding my high and lofty expectations.
What I think has changed is that they are investing more NIL in high school recruiting. Basically since the beginning of NIL, they’ve been great-elite at using NIL in the transfer portal. We see it when they retain talent that’s already in the building, landing a top portal QB, and this portal season that just closed. What we haven’t seen, until the 2026 class, is the consistent willingness to pay top dollar for high school players. It seems the original recruiting pitch a couple years was “We will pay you, but get to campus and prove it on the field. That’s when the real money will come”. Sometimes it worked, and sometimes it didn’t. A great example would be Derek Meadows. There must’ve been a meeting and a change in strategy happened. There seems to be more up front money and a re-evaluation period after the season ends (JaDon Blair was victim #1).
I bring this up in King Preyear’s thread because he’s just the most recent guy I had no idea ND was a legit contender for.
Notre Dame has entered uncharted waters in recruiting. With NIL and Notre Dame’s big bags, this should be the new norm and I hope they view it that way too. Here’s to one hell of a month of May.
