I mean sure, you’d do that in certain parts of the city. My family and I “Walk right through” Fort Wayne to dinner all the time…in certain parts of the city. Other parts you avoid. Of course South Bend has some very nice areas, but other parts are still very dangerous. Just like Fort Wayne. Just like Indy. Just like most midsized towns.
I’m just saying there is this stigma about South Bend that hasn’t been true for a long time.
Other fan bases, & even ND fans who live far away, talk about South Bend as if it’s Gary or south side Chicago.
It hasn’t been like that in a very long time.

It's 2023. You cannot live in a main city without having shady parts at best. Los Angeles, Miami, Columbus are no different. Not sure about Ann Arbor. But it is a liberal hell hole of a state. Don't think SB is going to scare any serious recruit off.

Just out of general curiosity, what are the nicest areas / nicest neighborhoods of South Bend? As mentioned, I've lived in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and now Houston, and I am generally/weirdly curious as to various cities, their trajectory, gentrification, etc. - especially in relation to the local universities. All are different, but I find them to still be interesting.

Scott is telling others & ND he will visit for the end of July BBQ.
But he has said that before.

I look at it this way;
A) He shows up to the BBQ, he commits to ND
B) He doesn’t show up to the BBQ, he isn’t going to ND

So I think we will have our answer the end of July.

If he shows, that BBQ better be on-fucking-point. Brisket, ribs, burnt ends, pulled pork, chicken thighs, all the fixins'...

Get Tobias Meriweather's dad on the grill!

Kelly was already heading to Baton Rouge, yet he still kept pushing and recruiting Tobias to ND for those burnt ends. Those burnt ends sealed the deal!

ETA: Kelly still has nothing on Tuberville while he was at Texas Tech. Tuberville left recruits high and dry at a steakhouse in Lubbock during the middle of a recruiting trip. Note that he didn't just leave to head to the men's room and/or to take a call. He left the restaurant premises all together. :ROFLMAO:

I don’t think South Bend has ever been Gary or South Chicago. The problem with SB is and always has been that typically there isn’t a lot to do for what you have to potentially put up with. Big town issues, small town entertainment.

Isn’t Notre Dame it’s own town? I think that’s my second stupid question for the day. But it looks that way on google maps.

It's more the campus and a very tight area around campus than its own town.

SB is close to Lake Michigan. St Joe is 35 minutes away and the western coast of Michigan is by far the most beautiful part of the Midwest. Beach towns after beach towns all the way up the western coast. ND people might not even know it’s there. It’s crazy how close it is and how much a world away it is and how many students miss it bc they’re home in the summer.

Also, I’ve been to Ann Arbor dozens of times. It’s not that cool. It does have 2 Whole Foods and SB area only has 1 so maybe that’s winning over Scott?

The area around UM has a few more bars and coffee shops but unless you’re a hippie and counting the actual # of pour over coffee shops, I don’t see how Eddy Street and Mishawaka can’t satisfy your needs.

Not to mention weekend trips to Chicago are far better than to Detroit.

So what’s Mike Singers update on Scott and Michigan? EJ trolling Irish fans again
He thinks Michigan has gained steam and thinks they're the team to beat, but he also doesn't seem to know where things are with Scott.

Says it could stretch out to the winter or might decide next months.

Frankly, I'm taking his update with a massive grain of salt. Because this time last month, Miami seemed like the team to beat.

Again, ND continues to be the constant in this recruitment.

The longer it goes where he doesn’t commit, the more he forgets the Michigan visit. Get him to the bbq and an OV for Ohio State and it all flips our direction. We will know a lot in the next few weeks.

This is where I'm at. He makes it on campus in July, I think ND gets him.

If he doesn't...well, we've seen this movie before.

And I think ND students have to live on campus their first few years, correct? The campus and around Eddy Street is a decent area. Going toward Mishawaka you might be okay, the SB surrounding area isn’t awful but the closer you get to downtown it gets meh.

I’m in Granger and I find myself in Saint Joe and Chicago both at least once per week for work. As well as on the ND campus 2 times per week. Love it!!

That’s a good spot to be. If I had to choose between Ann Arbor and SB I would personally choose SB (even as a college student) for its proximity to Chicago, the nearby beaches, breweries and awesomeness of the Michigan west coast, and that the Notre Dame/Eddy St area combined with Mishawaka/Granger is relatively similar enough to Ann Arbor. Ann Arbor literally has nothing good surrounding it besides quiet neighborhoods and it’s not a big city at all. From my pov, Detroit and Toledo are not fun. From a purely statistical safety standpoint since safety was mentioned, SE Michigan is one of the least safe areas in the nation, so I’d actually give the edge in safety to the Michiana area. While Ann Arbor itself is safer than SB and there are parts of SB that I probably wouldn’t hangout in at night, I’ve never felt unsafe there at all, particularly near campus. That said, I highly doubt any of our 6’3 250 lb dangerously athletic football players are scared of SB not consider that at all in their decision making. Updated Eddy St. ND is a lot more enticing than the ND I remember as a child.

Yes. The area off campus had a bad reputation in in the 00's but has significantly improved since I graduated (2008). Eddy St has provided a lot more nightlife options and the off campus options within walking distance are much better, to the point where I think South Bend's reputation is now undeserved.

I would say the area off campus of Ann Arbor is aesthetically nicer. And while I live in Chicago now and would take it 10/10 times vs Detroit, 30 minutes to Detroit is a different sell than 1.5 hours to Chicago.

Plus in Detroit you are only going to get shot at if you are involved certain activity. In Chicago you get shot at for walking down the wrong street or wearing the wrong colors

Not exactly true. Per capita the city is much safer than many other big cities, including Detroit. Violence in Chicago just happens to be much more visible for various reasons (political, drill music, etc).

I'm kinda surprised Oakland is on their over SF.

Sure, Oakland has the reputation, but SF has gone to absolutely sh*t in the past 10-15 years.

I agree SF has gone to absolute shit (no pun intended?). The list I linked covers murder/rape/robbery/aggravated assault, a lot of what has turned SF to shit has been the explosion of "nonviolent" crimes and the City/State's lack of desire to enforce consequences for them.

Corner is one of this teams strengths
CB RECRUITING has been average over the last decade...Morrison looks like a stud but wouldn't say it's a strength overall but definitely better than average. Recruiting leaves much to be desired

We're coming off a CB class of Gray and Bell, two very athletic highly rated corners.

Moore and Hobbs are also a really good tandem with a good shot of adding Beasley to that group.

I'd say CB recruiting has been desirable.

I’ve only been to south bend the once when I went to ND stadium for the opening of the 2017 season against Temple (Wimbush first game).
I was blown away by the whole experience but I did think south bend was unimpressive.

It's based on violent crime. Murders, armed robberies and the like. Felonies. A lot of the stuff you hear about in SF is more like petty crime, public nuisance, misdemeanors. But also SF is one of the wealthiest cities in the country. Rich techies aren't holding up no gas stations, even if there are a lot of homeless addicts living in tents downtown.

Either way, those sort of numbers get blown out of proportion as they relate to the average person. I lived and worked in St. Louis City - #1 with a bullet - for a decade and, while yeah there are some BAD neighborhoods, the worst thing that ever happened to me was my car got stolen (and recovered the next morning).

Anyway, South Bend is fine. The area south of campus is a lot nicer than it used to be (largely because Notre Dame has colonized it). It's probably not a "plus" for us on the recruiting front, but for most kids I'm not really sure it's the "minus" it's so often made out to be. LA and Miami are more fun, sure, but I doubt Clemson or Tuscaloosa is actually more exciting?
