Where's Crus with Dean? CB thrown.

I did the deed back in March. Dean's happy to join us.

Adam Gorney and Clint Cosgrove from Rivals play fact or fiction on a few questions. One pertaining to Justin Scott and whether an ND offer immediately puts them at the top of his list.

Gut feeling. This just makes too much sense given his background, high school, location and the need at. Nose tackle ND has. Nice to see the Illinois kids get the love.

Over the years I've seen a lot of this kind of sentiment on Notre Dame message boards. Maybe I am out of the loop these days, but I don't recall IL ever being considered a football hotbed. I've looked at the obvious spots like CA, TX, GA, FL, PA, OH and to some extent since Weis NJ as being the go to spots of the last 15-20 years. Not to mention that during this same period of time, recruiting has gone heavily national with the Internet and the rise of content from Rivals, Scout, ESPN, etc.

The obvious in this situation is he's attending a Catholic school from Chicago, but having seen in recent years who the top players have been in the program during periods of success and the higher drafted players that have moved on to professional careers, I have to ask why so many ND fans feel that Chicago/IL recruits are so important?

I want GOOD players to get the love, regardless of where they live.

I mean, isn't it mainly just because Chicago's the closest thing Notre Dame has to a backyard?

Yes, we can and do and should recruit all over the country but when you've got the nation's third-biggest city 90 minutes from campus doesn't it make sense to put at least some energy there? They also have a strong tradition of Catholic high school football (like New Jersey). So all the usual issues of weather and distance and culture actually work in our favor with Chicago kids.

Chicagoland certainly was a "hotbed" but those days are long gone. There was a time when probably half of the best players in CFB were Catholic (actual Catholics not just guys who go to a Catholic High School to get themselves into college) and Chicago had the best Catholic league in the country. Not coincidentally that was in the days of Leahy and Ara when we were always good.

Things changed and now Chicago is no longer among the top areas to recruit. Some of the midwestern teams who cannot survive on instate players hit Chicago pretty hard but ND should recruit nationally. If we get a large number of players from Chicago we are probably sliding towards "regional power" status.

I've done business in Chicago for 20 years. For a lot of these city kids, Catholic school or otherwise, Notre Dame might as well be the damn moon. Even their suburbs, the gravitational pull can have more of a Big Ten vibe than a place like Notre Dame.

The state overall has seen a rather significant population drop in the last 8 years and the city has seen it's population go down as well as more and more people migrate to the suburbs (you get more bang for your buck, better schools, etc.). Catholic schools are not getting any less cost effective and the property taxes in IL are some of the highest in America. Some of the surrounding suburban programs are top end when it comes to their place in the pecking order.

I think the Chicagoland area is always going to have Notre Dame guys like Zorich, Hughes, Love, Kmet, etc. From a football standpoint I like that this staff is casting a wider net in FL, GA, TX and CA. Fish where the fish are. As demograhics continue to flux more, look for TN, NC, SC and VA among other places as being states where recruiting talent is going to get deeper.

It would seem to me that if Illinois was ever going to get anywhere in terms of consistency, hitting Chicago area kids three stars and up is far more important to them. They don't have ND's reach, even as being one of the best public universitites in America. Seems like Wisconsin and Iowa would need to be slugging it out in there too since neither of them has a metro area that even compares to Indianapolis.

Agreed.

In this instance, this guy just started playing ball in HS and if he is at Ignatius deciding to stay there rather than transfer to Mt. Carmel, Phillips, IMG, etc. he's probably a balls to the wall fit for Notre Dame on and off the field.

THIS is a guy that Notre Dame should be firing all the pistons to get. Let Bielema have the three star kids from the suburbs.

Right now the back end of the DL recruiting bullpen is Washington in the 7th, Golden in the 8th, Freeman to close in the 9th.

Love it. Plus this young blood is less than two hours from ND on an easy day down the Chicago Skyway.

EJ from the Wolverine says it’s a ND-UM battle for Scott.
Says he wants to stay close to home.
Says he is attending UM’s BBQ event the 30th after ND’s the 26th.

Here is where EJ pisses me off & On3 doesn’t do anything about him.
It’s illegal for him to recruit for Michigan. But if you read the Q&A’s of his he always says, “It would be against NCAA rules to recruit for Michigan…” then will give some “wink, wink” comment, admitting he does it.

With Scott he mentioned in the past he lives right by him and would “get to know him.” Yesterday he was at his HS talking with his HS coach, who supposedly is his mentor & helping Scott make his decision.
Of course EJ is already in that guy’s ear.

EJ said it was worrisome that the HS coach said he hadn’t heard much himself from the Michigan staff. EJ said the UM staff should be contacting coaches of high profile recruits.
I guarantee EJ contacts the UM staff and tells them what the HS coach said. He always does. He will interfere with this recruitment like he always does. He negatively recruits ND so much.

I mean, honestly, I think the man negatively recruits UM by the way he carries himself.

Spindler had told certain people, not EJ, that backstory about promising his grandpa he was going to ND, way towards the beginning. That’s why a few insiders were confident in ND.
Along the way EJ inserted himself into Rocco’s recruitment and started hanging around, like he always does, & constantly bothered Rocco & his family.
EJ was convinced Rocco was going to Michigan.
Towards the end everyone started putting in picks for ND & EJ went on his podcast talking about how none of them knew anything & how he was close with the Spindler’s and Rocco was going to UM.

Then Wiltfong put in a prediction for ND. EJ did a podcast the day before the announcement and said the Wiltfong pick was a concern because he knew Wiltfong knew something & that if true, the Spindler’s had been lying to him.

The next day EJ drives out to the announcement, finds out on the way there that Rocco was choosing ND, and literally stops his drive & pulls into a Starbucks.
He watches the announcement from his laptop at Starbucks near Clarkston, then proceeds to write a scathing article about Rocco & his dad.
He says they have no integrity & so on. Says the betrayed him & blah, blah, blah.

So dude wouldn’t even show up to the announcement, just hides somewhere & badmouths them.
Then avoids them Rocco’s entire senior year of HS.
He was covering other Michigan HS recruits that entire year & avoided the Spindler’s like the plague because Rocco’s dad would have buried EJ.

So he ran his mouth about Rocco & his dad than hid from them.

If you ever see recruits standing in front of the Michigan flag, the one with the Wolverine wearing the M hat…that’s the flag EJ keeps in his car & has recruits hold up when he interviews them. LOL

Someone started a thread on the fart asking if it was a crazy idea for UM to hire EJ on the recruiting staff. They know he does it and are not ashamed of it either.
