Is it possible at all that Waffle started waffling or went full waffle because Notre Dame was going after other players at his position and felt threatened?

Pure speculation but I could very well see a scenario were Wafle and the ND coaches don't see eye to eye as they see him Nose and he sees himself as a SDE or as DT and can see its becoming an issue and decide to cut bait and move on to NG who knows he's a Nose.

The reason they're not taking both is because ND already took 2 guys who look to project to 1T in Houston and Vernon.

They also took Mukam and Traore, of which one or both will move inside.

It's also looking very likely that Bryce Young will grow into a 3T. Dude packed on 40 pounds over 1 year and it looks like he is going to get even bigger before he even sets foot on campus.

You take Sevillano and Young, you have a lot of bodies on the interior.

All that said, if Sevillano is the guy to replace Wafle, I'm scratching my head on that one. I like Sevillano's size, but Wafle looks more athletic and longer, so I can see him getting up and past 300 pretty easily. I know Sevillano is already 325, but I imagine he has to cut some of the baby weight down and I'm not sure he's going to be as explosive or disruptive as Wafle could be. Maybe they project him better at demanding double teams and being a mauler in run defense.

I don't know, I'll have to concede to the experts on this one. I was a fan of Wafle.

and I dont see Traroe getting big enough to move inside either.
Houston is gonna play inside, I believe Vernon will be a Rylie Mills type but I think he will mostly play Edge, same with Tracore, Armel could play inside too if he adds the weight

22 Sacks, 50 TFL's, 6 Forced Fumbles as a Junior, he didn't play defense 3 of their games because their center got hurt so they moved him to center.

The curious case of Sean Sevillano, for me, is that this is exactly the type of prospect we were told we had too much of on the roster before Spring Ball. He reminds me a lot of Jacob Lacey (who was our most productive DT before the transfer). Wider than he is long. Quick off the ball. Plays with great balance and leverage. Needs some body work. Cool. Excited about that.

But, Lacey got benched and transferred after his breakout performance against Cal. Largely because it was said then and reiterated, prior to Spring Camp, that ND was too "small" in the middle. And how we needed to get bigger and longer.

Now, I never really subscribe to all that. In fact, I took the opposite side of it, mostly. I always assumed the recruited size would development, which it seemingly has. But, that was the narrative. Now the narrative is, this guy is it. He's one of the coveted DT's. Great. I like the game but he's the exact type of prospect everyone was complaining we have too much of, a few short months ago.

I am as pleased, excited, (insert what ever adjective you want to use for this possible commitment) as I would've been 2 years ago. Just funny that we were told it wasn't good enough, a few short months ago.

There's been numerous podcasts in the past about ND looking to switch to a 3-3-5. Does Sevillano fit that defense more than Wafle does? I really hate the idea of them going to 3-3-5. Seems more like a gimmick defense. Maybe it's the flashbacks to BVG using it against Texas.

What was Lacey’s weight?
He was at ND for over 3 years in the weight program & was probably maxed out.
Sevillano is only 17 & over 300 already out of shape.
Maybe they see him 315 in shape 3 years from now, plugging up the middle?

If I remember correctly, Lacey arrived at ND around 280.

Freeman has said several times he wants to be multiple. Even fronts, odd fronts, big nickel (which I think they're looking at this year), etc.

What?

Dude was up past 280 prior to his senior year. He can definitely get big enough to play interior.

He has the frame to play at 290-300 easily.
I was thinking same. He seems to bug to be an end.

Fair point. Lacey got to 300 at one point and couldn’t hold it so he had to drop the weight. But is that really that unusual. How many sub 6’2 guys play really good football above 300. I believe Hinish maxed out right at 300. It’s just hard. It can be done but it’s rare.

There were only 3 DT’s drafted in the first 4 rounds in April that were 6’2 or shorter. They were all sub 290.

I like Sean just like I liked the others.

I think it also depends on how wide their body is.

It's like in basketball. Regular height is only part of the equation.

Charles Barkley was notable for being really short for a PF. He was listed at 6'6, but he was closer to 6'4. However, he boasted a 6'10 wingspan.

A guy can be on the shorter side, but have a wider body with a bigger wingspan. Some guys can carry the weight better than others, as they have natural explosiveness and use their weight and hands better.

It's rare, but I think of guys like Lou and Star Latulelei, DJ Reader, Javon Hargrave, Al Woods who were on the shorter side respective to DL, but were capable of carrying 300+ pounds very well.

Louis Nix played a decade ago. That's not a pipeline so much as a dried-out creekbed except it rains once in awhile.

No.

Sevillano is the guy replacing Wafle.

Scott is a luxury pick. ND seems to be keying in on a core DL class of Thomas, Mullins, Young, Sevillano and Mylachi Williams. Then they're going to swing for the fences for Scott and Rushing.
I hope they have Aaron Judge ready to go for Scott and Rushing
