Realistically, barring a Buchner injury, every QB is competing to start in the ‘24 season assuming Buchner is either good enough to go pro or bad enough to be beat out for the job. I guess there is also a weird middle ground where he’s such a dynamic runner that he dominates CFB but isn’t a pro prospect, but that seems pretty improbable.
Agree and that’s the weakness of our team IF Buchner isn’t all that. Big hole in 23 and you’d be starting a frosh or soph in 24 with minimal to no experience.

They should have given Novosad a private screening of the Shamrock Series uniform drop as soon as he hit campus and he would’ve verballed all over himself instantly.

Sept 3 we will find out how important Novosad is/was. If TB struggles all year, there’s essentially an opening at ND for any good to great QB talent.

That's only part of it. Buchner is obviously injury prone, so even if he is great--and that's a big if--having the situation behind him that we currently do, followed by missing on a 2023 QB is extremely precarious.

Missed 1 game due to injury at ND

Sounded like CJ spent a lot of time with the other commits and some 2024s whereas Novosad was in meetings and such. He said he liked CJ and mentioned QB room chemistry
It’s all perception. I trust the staff to explain to Novasad that the other schools he is considering either already have a ‘24 commit at QB or will a year from now. If that is reinforced to kid & family then it shouldn’t be a big deal.

Its hard to judge

Stairwell injury is a strange one.
Go watch the VT game.
That was very strange too.

He jumps & lands, not injured.
He runs sideways after landing, not injured.
He then starts walking, takes a normal step & falls to the ground in pain.

He missed one full game and was taken out of two others for injury at ND.
While playing like one-third of the snaps at most.
We need another QB behind Buchner. This is obvious, even if he wasn't a running QB who'll take a lot of hits. And we will get a '23. Failing to do so would be so stupid it's not even worth contemplating. We just don't know who it is yet.

I don't love the one-at-a-time approach either but if it's not Novosad it'll be someone else. Keep working down the list until someone looks at the depth chart and sees an opportunity. Personally hoping it's Minchey.

He also rolled his ankle...walking. Just saying.
FTR, the coaching staff basically admitted to the beat that if it were a regular season game he would've been fine to play, but why risk making an injury more serious for a scrimmage?

I think he was talking about the VT game?
Gotcha he might have been, I forgot about that injury until I read on. I thought he was referring to the stairwell this past Spring. Which I don't necessarily attribute to him being "injury" prone to my point above. They were just being cautious.

Not that it matters but I suspect Buchner could have finished the VT game if his play had been going differently in the second half.

I have chronic ankle problems and it's just something that needs to be managed rather than actually debilitating. I expect Tyler will just have to give in and start wearing a brace.

I’m trying to remember the timeline earlier in the year.
I think, from memory, he hurt his hamstring, running down the sideline, untouched, & sat out the rest of the game vs Purdue.
Then because of it, sat out the Wisky game?
So that was sort of weird too, a 19 year old pulling a hammy just running.
That’s something I would do in my 40’s.

Hopefully they have it taped up so tight his toes hurt…

I remember in 20’s everyone said wait until your 30’s. When I got to my 30’s i was actually in my professional prime & snubbed my nose at all of them.
Then they said wait until your 40.
At 40 I still felt good…
But then at 41 things just started falling apart for no reason. The last couple years have been rough.
Now I don’t say anything to the young guys when training, but as soon as the day is over I’m a mess. Icing everything & licking my wounds.
It literally came out of nowhere.

I was a amateur Muay Thai fighter in my 20’s. I was able to bounce back no problems. I went back to a fight school when I turned 41, three weeks in I tore my calf muscle during a sparring session. It was then I realized what people meant when they would tell me wait until your 40.

There is a reason most Muay Thai fighters in Thailand retire by 25. LOL
We used to travel to Phuket Island yearly to train when we had guys in UFC Australia shows. And all the MMA guys there were literally 10+ years older than all the Muay Thai kids.
I limit my Muay Thai sparring, and all standup sparring, now. Mostly do submission grappling with just a day or two a week of striking. Just last week I was teaching SWAT guys the Thai clinch, & when done I was hurting everywhere despite beating the crap out of them. That’s sad.
