Does everyone who is butthurt forget the fact he was recruited by BK and Del? BK left before he decommitted and everyone knew Del was going to be fired post bowl game. I’m not sure why we expect a WR recruit to stay through that. It’s a miracle we kept Meriweather.

I don't have strong feelings about CJ one way or the other but Del was hardly only assistant who departed, yet all but one other commit stuck through the coaching transition.
Of course they were both WRs who flipped to hated rivals...

Ryan Roberts and ESPECIALLY Shaun Davis were *all the way* in their feelings about CJ Williams on Irish Breakdown today.

I think Shaun wants to fist fight that kid outside the Gug when he comes for his visit. EXTREMELY big weird behavior from an adult human being and a paid media member and representative for their operation.

I think they got derailed a bit by some of the comments they were getting during their chat.

But, they did bring up a good point. We have a few players on the roster with his skill-set, or his type of “game”. This is the point both Shaun and Ryan kept getting back to.

But talent is talent. Even though C. J. has some questions about his ceiling, or his potential and system fit, it’s relatively the same questions we have in our current wide receiver room, especially those that are going to be on the two-deep.

Can Styles improve? What’s Colzie’s role? Is Jayden at slot his best position, can he take over as that “safety” blanket in the middle of the field? How big of a jump can Merriweather take from Year 1 to Year 2?

Adding another player into that same mix of questions could be puzzling to some, but it’s the old saying: “Nothing wrong with a little competition.”

One final point that Ryan and Shaun had, more specifically Ryan, was he said Merriweather was more productive than Williams on three less catches…. Like buddy, Merriweather only catch was a play designed to get him deep over the middle, with Stanford being in the absolute worst coverage to stop it. Williams’ 4 catches for 34 or 38 yards, could have been curls, slants, quick outs. Maybe I misinterpreted his comment, but it’s improper to make comments that one freshman stood out over the other because one had a touchdown and the other did not. They both barely played, for similar and different reasons.

Another thing to consider about taking Williams: We might consider him flighty/flaky, having flipped late from us and then bailing on USC after one season. But he can't transfer again as an undergrad. Wherever he goes now, there he is, for two, probably three seasons.
In other words if he wants a successful football career he'll need to put in the work.
That can have a clarifying effect on a young man.

He can still transfer. Just needs to sit out a year, unless he's goes FCS/JUCO

As long as he does his penance, then let him come. He brings depth with decent skills. We all know how one injury can make things go sideways.

I feel like Loy is hard to read on this one. Is he saying if CJ makes it to campus it’s basically a done deal?

I don't know what Loy is saying but that's probably a fair reading on the situation. He wouldn't be coming to campus to learn more about ND because he's already been through that process.

Well if he's coming to campus, classes start on Monday, no? So I think it's more a decision will come quick one way or the other. Also he wouldn't be taking this trip if he was sold on Wisconsin or WVU.

Right, but very small chance he actually would do that before he's graduated. So you got him minimum two seasons, more likely three, with four also an unlikely possibility.

He’s also mentioned the possibility of taking another visit or two this weekend. We will see. But it’s Wednesday and no news has come out about that scenario.

Which freshman?

USC only took one WR in the 2022 class.
I thought Michael Jackson and Mario Williams were freshmen. They appear to be sophomores.

At any rate, he wasn't just buried behind the big transfers. He had others in front of him.

He's a depth piece at ND, which is fine. I'm not excited about him.

The reality of the situation is that Riley wants speedy + explosive receivers because he runs a big play offense. CJ Williams was never a fit for what Riley does + Riley never offered him at Oklahoma. The whole thing was a clown show from the jump.

He is buried behind current players + they are bringing in another elite transfer + they have two freshmen 5-star players coming in. So the most generous reading of the situation is that he actually realizes now that he has no role in Riley's offense and knows he made a mistake and doesn't want to waste time before moving on... he wants to find an offense where he can be utilized as a high volume possession receiver. The most ungenerous role is that he is afraid of competition and/or can't compete with existing USC WRs. Regardless, it's hard to see him being anything special. But ND didn't really need "special" last year, they just needed people who could run consistent routes and catch the ball, so it's easy to see how he could be a value add here if a schollie is open.

This is it. I'm going to guess if CJ was here this past year, he would have replaced Styles. Especially on those quick short passes that seemed like he always had trouble holding onto.

Anyway, if Williams visits this weekend, he’s ND. I don’t blame him for decommitting last yr w/ the coaching change and Del getting fired. I do hope this opens the door for more undergrad transfers at ND. I’d like to think it would also open a pipeline with Mater Dei, but probably not. That school sucks.

Yes, true, if he totally bombs out at ND (or whatever his new school is), he could either sit or go way down the food chain.
But for someone of his pedigree and talent, and presumably ambition, that would be a major disappointment. Point is he’s not in position to jump again to some other P5 if he doesn’t win a starting job right off the bat.
