To be fair, Bertrand and Kyren Williams were literally tied in the 247 rankings - as the #358 player nationally - Kiser was tucked right in between Bertrand and Liufau, and Cam Hart was rated below all of them. The "best" LB in our class that year was Osita Ekwonu. So who knows.
Got me to go back and pull up the 2019 class. And then my face made the mister yuck sticker. Got Hamilton and Foskey right and some contributors but a whole lot of yikes in there.

I posited that the coaches want the best players to play because their jobs depend on it.

Your position is to throw skepticism at this with some half-thought examples. Joe Alt wasn't ready to be a starter when he first went in, he HAD to play and he seasoned quickly. I think most believe, retrospectively, he would've earned a starting spot as a RS freshman after he had enough time to develop. His development was redlined out of need and he grew into the position. Justin A. was probably the more consistently sound player last year. Botelho would've probably given us more splash plays and more gaps unaccounted for. This is what all of the coaches have been saying for 2+ years.

I'm rooting hard for Botelho, seems like a guy who has worked his tail off to get better and play under control but they are still talking about this 3 years after matriculation. That means he's still learning.

Of course there are players whose games elevate under the bright lights but there aren't players who miss their assignments who all of a sudden become assignment sound.

Retrospective analysis is always so easy, it's predictive analysis applied to the human element that's difficult. The coaches are taking in far more data points than we are. They are charting wins/losses/assignment correctness and then applying their own assessment and making a determination on who gives them the best chance to win. No one gets to learn on the job unless there are no better options.

How many busted assignments would you give up per sack? How many per QB pressure? Are they an even trade? Does one potentially have a bigger determination on the game? What about when the game is close? 3rd quarter? 4th quarter? These are the equations constantly being run through spring/summer/fall and the season.
I think coaches do want to play the best player but many of them play players they trust. Ideally you want it to be your best players as well. Historically ND has struggled getting their best talent on the field early compared to other programs, probably due to class obligations. Not always obviously.

I don't agree with the bolded. I think historically, programs have trouble putting their best talent on the field unless the player is either a 5-star can't miss talent with so much athleticism that even when they 'miss' they don't miss or you have a very athletic player with supreme understanding of the game and responsibilities.

Very few programs have young 'talented' guys starting early/making huge contributions. You can always find a stud if you look across the landscape but show me the national title contenders that are starting a lot of freshman and sophomores. It's incredibly rare and most likely at a place like Georgia/Bama/tOSU where they have amassed so much top end talent around them that a few are bound to break into the starting line-up.

It feels like we're having the Jordan Johnson discussion all over again.

I would suggest EVERY coach has this challenge. Sometimes they go for trust-sometimes they go for talent/best.

Historically Who?

The top teams in the country, the ones always up there lately. Bama, Georgia, osu, Clemson have young players everywhere. They have to because so many are expected to and do leave after 3 years. Oline is probably the biggest exception where even they have some seniority.

Look at mickens last year… Ben mo made some major mistakes early bet kept rolling him out there, and second half of the season he was one of the best corners in the country. It would have been easy to not play him as much after Syracuse, instead next game he dominates vs Clemson because he’s talented.

It’s not a perfect science I get it. But if someone isn’t performing in games over and over, I don’t care how good they practice or their experience/seniority. You have to give others opportunities or change what you’re doing with them. Marist we just had banging his head against a concrete wall game after game, and missed tackle/assignment game after game.

Who was the bigger air swing JJ or Darnell Ewell. God bless them both. Hope they are kicking butt somewhere. Did Ewell get his degree?
Ewell was put on a medical so you'd think he could have graduated. Don't see anything online about him though since he left the team

Kollie was an incoming freshman as Lea took the Vanderbilt job; thanks for Lea for not poaching him to Vanderbilt.

I think Kollie can get PT this year if he is patient. I would like to see better play out of Bertrand, Kiser, and Liufau, but I think our reserve LB's can make a difference.

If he wants to transfer, bye.

Freeman said Kollie is in concussion protocol and he hopes to get him back to get reps this week. Let's hope so!

Wasn't he in concussion protocol last year? Better this than the portal-I still believe he will be a stud for the Irish.

I talked a lot about that last season. Long and BK dropping the ball in 2019 and 2020 are a big reason we've been starting so many Freshmen and Sophomores the last two seasons. Lots of talent in those young guys, but the experience and leadership weren't developed yet. These next few seasons should be fun.
