Maybe there’s a guy in the portal who has been a solid career backup that we could bring in. Maybe doesn’t have the starts under his belt, but he’s had some post season experience situationally and has been a reliable guy to keep the ship upright if you need him
I heard Nico is still available 😂

We could probably use someone with that kind of mobility too to use in a package - make DCs think when they see him come into the game

Well the QB room salary hit is greatly reduced by Angeli leaving. Hopefully Minchey can be convinced to stay with some extra Benjamins, but if it’s Carr’s team than you can’t blame the guy.

I hope Minchey stays but wouldn’t begrudge him leaving. Nice that a guy who was pinned as not even the competition stuck around to give winning the job a shot.

Glass half empty on him going is that now ND doesn’t really have a backup

Glass half full is that as the other “winner” of the 3 man competition he sees the writing on the wall that CJ is too good to beat out

I just wouldn't understand the move.

Freeman has always said he wants a 2-man battle. Minchey now has that. Even if he loses the job to Carr, he's still an injury away of taking snaps for a playoff team.

Is he getting the opportunity to come in and start anywhere else? Just feels like he's going to have to earn the job whether he stays or goes.

It will be hard to figure out a real backup at this point, but they've got about 24 hours to keep tampering if both QBs move on. If not, the portal is very empty on QBs.

I think there are other schools that have yet to play their spring game, so there will likely be additional QBs entering in the near future. The window closes on the 25th, plus grad transfers can enter whenever they want.

Ok:

- Meeting with Minchey today (NIL, and role moving forward)

- ND is willing to bump his compensation fairly significantly.

- He would prefer to stay, but NIL needs to be in order, and he would like to discuss the concept of packages designed specifically for him, even if he never starts.

- If Minchey were to leave, ND has already looked at potential portal candidates, and backchanneled.
Looking at the big picture, I think it would make the most sense for Minchey to stick around for 1 more year. The worst case he gets an ND degree and is CJ's backup for 1 year and then can transfer with 2 years of eligibility remaining. The best case he gets an ND degree and wins the job in the fall.

If Minchey leaves, does ND try to get Angeli to stay?

The details on the third point matter, but as it’s not relatively unreasonable provided he isn’t asking for multiple drives.

Damn, so Carr balls out at one practice when the lights are the brightest and that's that? He sure did look the part. Losing Minchey and Angeli would be very rough for the depth though. We'll all be holding out breath every time Carr gets breathed on.

Here's to hoping the staff can put together an enticing package to keep Kenny around for the fall.

All current info almost points to the idea that Carr enters the summer as the guy already…

I mean I am quite certain that the coaches have spoken with all the QBs on what the pecking order is after the entirety of spring ball. Hence why Steve didn't want to sit around another season to be a back up.

I would assume Kenny knows Steve was compensated well to stick around and be Riley’s back up last year. I see no reason ND doesn’t do the same for Kenny to be the back up in the QB room this season. He ain’t going anywhere

I have a feeling that it's obvious within the team that Carr is going to be the starter. Makes sense when you think about it. Gives Carr that much more time to prepare and work with the coaches rather than waiting until August.

Compensating Minchey well and giving him some run seems like a no brainer to me. The money is there and Denbrock can use him perfectly.

Also no one wants to say it, but Carr was injured last year and he's one more similar fluke away from this being Minchey's show.

That said, I do see glimpses of Minchey doing some really great things both with his legs and arm. I hope he can stay engaged and ready to go, and keep working to improve.

Bingo. The Ole Miss QB situation is an absolute mess right now. Chambliss is the 2nd QB they have portaled this off-season. Their backup(not the OTHER guy they got in the portal) hurt his hand and for all the bloviating Kiffin did re: Simmons this offseason if you're comfortable with him as your starter you don't bring in a kid with two years of eligibility remaining from the D-II level.

If Notre Dame made a similar move to this one, this place would explode. I can't even imagine the reaction to a FCS player or maybe even a G6 player coming in to compete for time...let alone a kid from D-II
