I've paid them to beef up his name, hoping to loop Giddyup into The Bet. Tried the Browns, but they were more focused on Hebert have already asked the NFL for a draft exemption for him to come out this year.

Anyone have any insight on how the QBs played during the scrimmage on Friday? Info on this camp is extremely limited.

My take on the QB: Freeman has all coaches stating it's neck and neck when they get reached out to by media. Media also has zero clue about what they don't see, and they see less than 10% of what occurs. So, PsyOp seems correct.

Edit: This serves a few purposes. If everyone knew Carr was crushing it or had the job, Minchey "could" become disengaged. With media stating neck and neck, he is still there producing and engaged.

IrishLion seems to have a solid source, and is backed by Mercke. Freeman and his staff have always kept things locked down.

My take on the QB situation is this (with no expert knowledge or source):

Freeman is making good on his promise to create as much pressure as possible before Miami. QB competition is part of that. There is no way to simulate the stress of a game, imitate the heartburn of a turnover, or increase the pressure than by pushing both guys as hard as they can. I bet he has asked the QBs to take on risk/reward of pushing the ball down the field as another way to generate that type of pressure.

I think if Carr loses the job it wont be a matter of skill, but rather, that they don't trust him to keep his composure. After hearing his interview at the beginning of fall I remember thinking, "is this a guy who would get inside his own head if he threw a pick? or after any mistake?" That was only amplified by him saying he is so gittery that he needs to release some energy before practice. It's also why I think Minchey stressed how cool he is under pressure. He knows that he doesn't have Carr's skills, so he's emphasizing his emotional steadiness and his ability/willingness to run with the ball rather than take on risk when he doesn't have to.

I see a lot of what is happening now, the lack of media presence, the lack of clarity, as Freeman intentionally putting Carr in a pressure situation and seeing he can keep his cool.

Me personally, I keep thinking back to the 2 Blue and Gold games and the offense looked so much easier with Carr at Q than Minchey. I dont quite understand why everyone thinks Minchey is supremely athletic in comparison to Carr. I think Carr ran for more yards in HS than Minchey did for example. And Minchey I think is like a 4.7 guy tops. Not some huge gaop there. I understand he did that backflip, but so did our Walk-on Fullback in the preseason for the Steelers. And I dont see anyone else lauding that.

I could be totally off. But I would say they are putting a ton of pressure and stress on Carr and seeing if he can take it. If he's struggling, then he probably needs to develop a better mental game. But I just think in everything I have seen live and in person, he checks that box and more.

My other thought:

If they had named a QB in the first week, it would have signaled we only have 1 viable QB.
If they announce one between now and the 17th, it means we have 2 true viable QBs.
If they announce after the 17th, we have no viable QBs.

So I think we are right on schedule. Anyways, rant over.

On hit and hustle, they said Minchey has been steady and what they expected. Carr hasn’t take the leap/hasn’t looked as good as spring ball Carr

I keep hearing that he "hasn't taken the leap." What's that actually mean? When I watch the Blue Gold game, he looks better than Minchey, and frankly, better throwing the ball than any other QB we've had since Clausen. He ran through his progressions effectively, and was extremely accurate and on time with pretty much every throw aside from the pick.

What's "the leap" they were wanting or looking for? I wish our reporters would talk about that more. I think its the mental aspect of the game from a failure standpoint/stress of being the starting ND QB, but I'm not positive, just extrapolating from what coaches and he have said. Otherwise, I dont think he needed a "leap" to be ahead of Minchey. And I'd actually be more interested in what the beat thinks Minchey did to leap Carr.

I stand by the notion that no one knows what’s going on with the QB competition, and that’s how Freeman wants it. He is old school when it comes to information (or lack thereof).

This situation would be troubling under Kelly. It could be troubling in this instance too, but I have a feeling it’s not.

I keep feeling like people have this expectation that him or Minchey should be polished, know the playbook, defenses, coverages, not make mistakes, be able to think short to long, etc. They aren't senior QB's, why do we expect them to do senior QB things?

The fact is, whomever wins this battle, we as fans better be ready for interceptions at a rate we haven't seen in probably a decade. Every young QB makes mistakes and it's going to happen here, and it may even cost us a game or two that we otherwise should have won.

I agree with this sentiment, which is why I haven't really commented or cared about it a whole lot. I trust that Freeman has a good pulse on the QB room and knows which buttons to push to get what he wants from the position. I've loved how he talks about the room in previous years and how he handled each of them. He's obviously very methodical about it. He and Gino know what they're doing behind closed doors.

Consistency is always the baseline requirement for any position, but I’d like more clarity on what each guy needs to be consistent in.

@SDIrishFan made some great points about the growing pains that almost any QB will face, and real growth often involves making mistakes along the way.

So here’s what I’m wondering:
  • Where exactly is Carr lacking consistency right now?
  • Where is Minchey lacking it?
  • And what “jump” did people expect Carr to make over the summer and first couple of weeks of fall camp that, according to the beat, hasn’t happened yet?
Those are the questions I’d love to see answered, though I doubt we’ll get specifics.

That said, I trust Freeman and Gino to develop these guys and pick the QB who gives us the best chance to win.

If i remember, @Merckxe525 said Carr needed to be more consistent with his progressions. I agree knowing what “consistent” means would be helpful

I have always attributed it to decision making.

It could mean throwing in tighter windows with more success, too
