My hot take

Minchy starts with a short short rope. If he takes the bull by the horns, great. If not, Carr doesn’t have the huge pressure on his shoulders and keeps the job for year. Just like Denbrock did with Desmond ridder

I'm just curious where they are getting their information from and who their sources are. They aren't at practices, the staff is crazy tight lipped and everything out of spring ball was that it was carrs job to lose. A lot of this to me is websites having to push stories when they aren't getting fed any information so it's a neck and neck competition and they can't actually be wrong on who is the starter.

My guess, reading between the line:

Coaches love predictability.

- Carr is better and has NFL-upside. But he's a bit amped up right now. Coaches are thinking, what's he going to do in those first 2-3 games?
- Minchey is very good and very calm. He's probably giving the impression that he would handle the pressure well, even if he's not as dynamic in the pass game.

To be serious for a minute (and without any data to support this): Carr has looked to me in the small samples I saw of him like an ice cool gunslinger who probably really likes certain throws, and might think he's near invincible on them. If so, he just might rotate into THAT option of his reads too quickly. The guy's young. He has to feel more comfortable doing what made him an assassin. A good QB coach would want to preserve the assassin while still getting him to pay better attention to certain routes. AND ... I'll bet that's what happens by Fall ball.
End of my dateless rant, and I happily sit back awaiting which REALLY GOOD QB starts for us, since I don't see the problem here.

Reliable Source:

- Don’t be alarmed if Carr hasn’t out-distanced Minchey yet… has more to do with Minchey continuing to improve and making it a battle

- If both guys continue as currently performing, Carr will begin to distance himself with more time… maybe give these guys another week or week-and-a-half in pads and see where we’re at

- Minchey improving in many areas, including control of the offense, footwork, pocket presence; still susceptible to making bad reads

- A lot of the focus in reports about the QB battle focusing on Minchey, but he has not shown he’s better than Carr to this point, and has not shown more consistency than Carr to this point.

My take from the info so generously provided? Freeman preaches consistency, and wants to see it. The only way Minchey passes Carr is if he stacks “consistent” days one after another, and with Carr looking as good as he did through Spring, that means Carr is going to have to show a total lack of his own consistency. Don’t expect that to be the case at this time, reading between the lines

Thanks for the info! Based on what you’re hearing…do you think we will at least get above average QB play regardless of who wins the job?

I expect a Sam Leavitt type year for our starting qb. It's reasonable for both given their talent level and necessary if we want to get back to the playoffs.

I think it is part of the counter intelligence operation as well that Jagusah is supposedly out.

I stand by the notion that no one knows what’s going on with the QB competition, and that’s how Freeman wants it. He is old school when it comes to information (or lack thereof).

This situation would be troubling under Kelly. It could be troubling in this instance too, but I have a feeling it’s not.
Yep. Thinking of all those fun trick plays last season and how effective they were he may have fallen in love with the art of deception which I am good with.

It’s gonna be hard for this team to not average 40 PPG you are gonna put your second string in and still be better than 70% of the teams first string we face

Whoever ends up being QB 2 needs to plan like they are QB 1. All it takes is one play and you will be called upon

I suspect whomever wins the job will most likely be QB all year (baring injury). Our offense has too good of a line, rbs, and wrs for the QB not to play well. The only chance I see the QB2 take over is between game 1 to game 2 due to the bye (again baring injury) if that QB just can't mentally handle it and folds on the stage at Miami (doubt it happens but it could).

What's this all mean. The QB2 will get some reps (hopefully blow out) and probably a few special packages here and there. That will be their college game film for coaches when they transfer after this season. The QB2 needs to prepare like they are QB1, and i expect freeman to let them get some real reps and run the full offense even with a big lead because it's the right thing to do for the program and QB. I fully expect the starting QB this year to play very well, especially as the season progresses and the other one to transfer out. Once ND goes all in on a QB that's most likely our QB for the next 2-3 years.

Maybe the jitters or whatever it is that Carr has before practice isn't because he's unsure, but rather that he is anxious for August 31 to arrive. Afterall, he's been waiting for two years and the time is near.
