Personally I'm getting frustrated hearing this from coaches. How about dummy down the playbook so players can play fast? I mean is our playbook so much more advanced than everywhere else? We need these athletes to be useful on the field. The rules make it so simple to play offense now. Sorry I'm tired of this excuse and just getting old to me.
I find Sampson's tweet encouraging. It means he really wants Burress to put it together because he can see the obvious talent. I immediately think of Kevin Stepherson but I believe Burress' background should have him prepared to do the work. Once he settles in and stops making mental mistakes, he'll earn snaps on an increasing basis.
Honestly, that makes me believe more than ever that Burress might force his way in this season. Really excited to watch it play out.
And FFS, can people stop saying "dumb down the playbook" as though the offense can simply be changed around to suit players who haven't fully memorized their responsibility? It's one thing if the guy is a 4.3 freak who can run go routes all day, then we can talk about selectively putting them in for plays to challenge the defense.
But with a tactician WR like Burress, who looks like he does all of the little things well, they can't spoon feed him. I would guess those remarks are intended to light a fire and keep Burress grinding. Denbrock doesn't say that unless he can see something special in his game.
