If the only two choices are Hartline or Parker, I agree with you.
Those aren't the only two choices, thankfully, but it's interesting how suddenly play calling experience and resume no longer matter when looking at the two.

Having one year of play calling experience should be a positive over someone who has none. For Parker, I don't think that's the case.

Well, parker has had no development or opportunities to learn to be an OC and it showed. He clearly did not have a clue on how to prepare a game plan to move the ball vs a good defense other than to hope estime or hartman make an amazing play. He clearly was thrown to the wolves at WVU and did bad there.

Hartline has been building up for this and developing under Ryan Day who is one of if not the best offensive minds in college football. He should be in a much better position to understand how you build a great offense, coach it, lead it, and call plays. That is WAYYY ahead of where parker was going into this year even with his short stint as OC at WVU.

Can someone provide me a reasonable explanation on why Hartline would leave pOSU for a lateral move (at best) to ND???????
Wanting a fresh start after realizing that there is a definitive ceiling with Day at the helms. Three losses in a row to UMich. When the goals at OSU are

- Beat Michigan
- Win the Big Ten
- Win a Natty

Day (and by proxy Hartline) is now 0-9 here over the last 3 years.

In the Michigan game, twice Day settled on 4th and short. He intentionally drained 40 sec off the clock and settled for a 52-yard FG attempt to end the 1H, when they had a timeout and could’ve gained 10-20 more yards (spoiler: they missed). If this feels like deja vu, it’s eerily similar to when they were driving with Stroud against Georgia last year, got to the 30-35, and then went ultra conservative and missed the FG to lose the game.

Beating up on Rutgers and Illinois is cool, but for all the hate OSU fans give ND and BK about never being able to win the big game, it does feel like Ryan Day is in a similar spot right now - some of it is definitely his coaching. They also entrusted their season to Kyle Mccord.

OSU had JSN, MHJr, Olave, Garrett Wilson at the same time and couldn’t win a natty. Hartline is doing all he can there.

It’s not unreasonable to think that Hartline could want to try elsewhere if his A+ WR groups aren’t enough to get OSU the title.

playing Devils Advocate... if Hartline's greatest skill is recruiting, why come to a school which would limit your ability to recruit?

Furthermore, MF seems to be committed to pounding the football vs. spreading it out and throwing it around the field. Not sure that puts him on the same page as Hartline.

So Loy dropped Shephard's name and said he expects him to be the hire. But then floated out the caveat that ND will have to pony up because Shep makes good money at UW.

He didn't say he expects him to be the hire, he said he expects him to be the #1 call. After Loy limbed out all recruiting season and hit more than missed, I won't allow misinformation on his name ;)

AHC is usually a title added to be able to pay an assistant more than normal. Its common to add titles to justify a pay bump. With Shep I could see us offering Pass game coordinator and other titles as well. Hartline seems like a reach for this search but Loy put it out there. Might not be happy that he has become just a figurehead OC and might be able to be more involved with MF.

edit: Loy has just posted that the only hang up with Shephard at the moment would be money. He does well financially at Washington but we might have the money to spend this year.
We've always had the money. It's whether the higher ups can be convinced to spend the money.

I just became a huge Oregon fan. The idea of waiting for the playoff makes me nervous.

He said "Just to be clear: Jamarcus Shephard is my best guess for Notre Dame's next receivers coach."

Best guess doesn't mean "I expect him to be". Best guess means he makes the most sense given he's the #1 call, which is kind of all he has to go on since it's so early.

"Expects him to be the hire" is saying he'd predict Shepherd over the field. These are different. If I missed a follow up post of his where he added to this, I apologize.

Hartline's positive is he can recruit receivers at Ohio State, and Notre Dame is not Ohio State when it comes to admissions said everyone ever who has drawn breath for the last five minutes.

Is there an issue with the players not respecting Parker? Is he liked among the offensive personnel?

Brian Hartline is a pipedream, and for me, a lot more hype than substance. Somebody in Loy's profession is going to drop the name as long as he can to stir the pot because there is a minority that believes it's possible. The guy is well documented as a die hard Buckeye and to @BoredIrish's point, he can keep doing what he's doing with relative ease at Ohio State vs coming to Notre Dame and having one hand tied behind his back in comparison.

He may very well be a viable option behind the scenes, but from what we see on the surface, it doesn't feel at all plausible unless a lot of what we know to be true suddenly changes in 180 degree fashion. As ND fans, we're sure as hell not used to that.

I have never believed the dollar amount was the reason the Ludwig thing fell through. JS had to get clearance for a buyout that was 3x (?) what the board had agreed to. He can't just make that call unilaterally. By the time that happened Ludwig got cold feet.

Seems like the most realistic scenario.

I'd prefer a quality OC who is experienced. But if the choice is Hartline or Parker, give me Hartline. He'll get better WR's on the roster and is arguably the best WR coach in the country.
How much of his successful recruiting and development really about the pull of OSU though?

I also read (I think it was on this board?) that Ludwig never truly wanted to leave Utah, and that his "buyout" was tripled after the ND visit (i.e., he leveraged the ND interest to get a better deal out of Utah).

If that's the case, I don't mind ND walking away. My issue is that they didn't continue to truly search for the next guy, and just turned and handed the keys to Parker.

I read that Shepherd was the runner-up to Stuckey last year. Sure would have been nice if Freeman had chosen correctly the first time.

Freeman let Tommy decide on Stuckey since Tommy was the OC.

On the podcast I used to run, Shepherd was the guy who I falsely reported was going to be WR coach. I thought my source was good.

Two years early, but maybe the source was right all along 👀

That may have been true - that the buyout was higher than ND expected - but that just means JS and company screwed up the vetting process. Sampson reported after the debacle that the details of Ludwig's contract, including his buyout, were public long before he interviewed. Local Utah beat reporters had reported those details sometime after Ludwig signed his deal. If ND got those details wrong it was through their own negligence.

Also, it doesn't matter if somehow they innocently got the buyout details wrong. After the fact, JS said ND was willing to pay it. OK, well if in the end it didn't matter that the buyout was 3x higher than expected, then you better have a process in place to expedite approving the final deal. Bama didn't let Rees get back on a plane until they had a deal in hand. ND let Ludwig get on a plane without a deal and then tried to circle back to him after letting him think there was a good chance no deal could be made. It's no surprise that he made peace with the idea that he was going to stick with Utah. That's ND's fault for not being prepared for any scenario and not getting the deal done while Ludwig was on campus.

Wasn’t it like a month before spring practice? Might explain why MF decided to wrap things up quickly.

The implication is that Ludwig didn’t really want a deal with Notre Dame. He wanted a better deal with Utah. If that is in fact true, and he leveraged ND for a better contract. I don’t have a problem with ND walking away.
