Can someone provide me a reasonable explanation on why Hartline would leave pOSU for a lateral move (at best) to ND???????
Wanting a fresh start after realizing that there is a definitive ceiling with Day at the helms. Three losses in a row to UMich. When the goals at OSU are
- Beat Michigan
- Win the Big Ten
- Win a Natty
Day (and by proxy Hartline) is now 0-9 here over the last 3 years.
In the Michigan game, twice Day settled on 4th and short. He intentionally drained 40 sec off the clock and settled for a 52-yard FG attempt to end the 1H, when they had a timeout and could’ve gained 10-20 more yards (spoiler: they missed). If this feels like deja vu, it’s eerily similar to when they were driving with Stroud against Georgia last year, got to the 30-35, and then went ultra conservative and missed the FG to lose the game.
Beating up on Rutgers and Illinois is cool, but for all the hate OSU fans give ND and BK about never being able to win the big game, it does feel like Ryan Day is in a similar spot right now - some of it is definitely his coaching. They also entrusted their season to Kyle Mccord.
OSU had JSN, MHJr, Olave, Garrett Wilson at the same time and couldn’t win a natty. Hartline is doing all he can there.
It’s not unreasonable to think that Hartline could want to try elsewhere if his A+ WR groups aren’t enough to get OSU the title.
