Cross has had a sore hamstring all summer into camp.
They are definitely load managing him at this point.
There isn’t much he needs to get out of the “learning” process of camp. He knows it all.
And he always gives 100% in games when he is on the field, so no worries there.

If you guys are worried about hype, here’s the most negative/“hater” stuff I’ve heard (I don’t believe all of it, just sharing):
-Wagner is way over listed on weight and height, and is going to struggle in the run game. Has done well pass protecting though because he’s got good feet.
-Riley Leonard will be the guy at QB but he’s not lighting the world on fire. Will be closer to a Josh Allen at Wyoming than some polished gunslinger.
-WR position group is getting a ton of hype but no one is actually a “stud” top draft pick style WR. Every single starter for Ohio State is better than every guy we can run out there.
-Baker may be one of the worst starting tackles of any top 10 team. Jagusah was inconsistent but at least had NFL traits. Baker gets beat clean far too often.
-I haven’t heard anything hater-ish on the defense tbh

Here’s the biggest hype:
-Denbrock is polar opposite of Parker in all of the right ways and commands respect. Every skill position group is playing better than a year ago.
-WR has 5 guys you “trust” and the fact that they can be productive against our secondary is very encouraging. They all have complimentary skills too.
-TE has two surefire NFL guys and you can compensate for a bad tackle by keeping one of them in to block or chip.
-Collins and Thomas will also be big factors run blocking.
-CJ Carr can absolutely sling it *and* is smart AF. Likely multi-year starter and NFL draft pick. But Leonard is clearly the dude and can do more of what Denbrock wants with his legs.

-Defense… “if they can get pass rush without blitzing, might be the best in the country”… Al Golden with no “holes” anywhere.

In all seriousness....you can say this about OSU's WRs vs just about every other WR room in the country lol. If ND has a few day 2-3 pick WRs in this room it'd be a massive improvement and would help the offense a ton.

Taken together, it's a healthy reality of what we have heading into A&M. The run game could be hindered by Wagner. The passing game will likely be hindered by Tosh. WRs should be reliable and capable, which is a big change from last year. Denbrock will need to generate some quick game, easy completions for Riley to help keep things moving.

CJ Carr is the future!

The tackle situation is terrifying.

Based on that take, it would’ve made sense to me to flip Baker and Wagner. You really need your best and most athletic tackle at LT and you can get away with a road grader at RT if he can at least down block and stick with a block on an outside run.

It would appear to me that they kept the tackles status quo because they plan on trying to get Lambert ready for prime time sooner rather than later.

Leonard isn’t setting the world on fire, but is still getting compared to a QB drafted in the top 10 lol

That was prob understood w/o being said tho.

Makes me think about the 2018 DL with Kareem, Tillery, Hayes and Okwara. Good chance they get home with 4 and you are fucked, then.

Is there any chance Cross is actually hurt and Sampson is just downplaying it?
Cross has had hamstring tightness, it sounds like, for a while now. I’m just nervous cuz several players had hamstring issues last year and it never seemed to get better during the season. So hopefully they are being ultra cautious and just wanting it to heal now rather than letting it nag all season.

Irish illustrated instant analysis post practice review did say that there were reports about cross suffering a lower extremity injury but that they don’t know anything more about it.

It’s hard not to fear the worst after the crap month we’ve had

My biggest concern has always been this. Up to this point, this who he’s always been. But we should’ve known that coming in. We just have to hope Denbrock can manage it better or he doesn’t have one of those games, throwing the ball, in the big games.
