Why would you want to allow a Cinderella? If your goal is to crown the best team as the national champion, then the emergence of a Cinderella is an even bigger problem than blowouts are.
Football is flukey. NIU beat Notre Dame but nobody thinks they're the better team because the weight of the evidence over the course of the season provided additional data points. A single elimination tournament magnifies the problem of flukes.
Cinderellas in college football are going to be teams who are overlooked, like the old Boise State or TCU teams. The data points in college football are next to meaningless because you play at most a tenth of the available teams all year. Let's say IU beats us and then Georgia and Penn State and Oregon. It shows that the weak schedule shit was wrong and they were a legit team.
