Tennessee State comes to town to start their season in South Bend. They are led by Eddie George in his third year; to date, he's compiled a 9-13 record, which is a solid improvement based on the previous two years before his arrival, in which TSU won a combined 5 games. They compete in the Ohio Valley Conference at the FCS level, and they are the first FCS opponent ND has ever played.

Tim O'Malley provided a high level overview of TSU, which you can read here:

Spark notes:

Based on the 2022 season, they are much better defensively than they are offensively. Their offense was ranked 104/130 overall in the FCS in PPG, and 98th in YPG. They were 78th and 90th in running and passing offense, respectively. They are led offensively by returning starter QB Draylen Ellis, who transferred from Austin Peay in 2022. The weakness of TSU was up front on the OL in 2022, which was evident from their lackluster running attack and a poor 54.8% completion percentage for Ellis. They do feature a revamped OL in 2023, with only one starter returning up front, so they can't be much worse than they were a year ago. Ellis reportedly has scrambling ability as he had to run for his life frequenltly last year, but he's not known to be a serious running threat who's going to kill us with his legs. Look for him to improvise a bit and scramble out of trouble early and often, and hopefully ND can convert these broken plays into TOs. On that note, their one positive from offense last year was their ability to take care of the football, with only 13 total TOs in 2022, good for 20th in the FCS.

Defensively, they were much more respectable as a unit, ranked 39th in PPG and 50th in YPG, at 24.7 and 364 yards, respectively. They're much better in pass defense, ranked 19th overall, but were pretty vulnerable against the run, ranked 79th. They do have a very impressive red zone history, ranked 2nd in RZ TD rate at 65%, which was 2nd in the FCS.

Their last five games against FBS opponents are as follows, with a 1-4 record.

2022: Middle Tennessee St.: L, 6-49
2021: Mississippi St.: L, 10-55
2020: N/A (COVID)
2019: Middle Tennessee St.: L, 26-45
2018: Vanderbilt: L, 27-31
2017: Georgia St.: W, 17-10

They are 14-22-2 (0.395%) all time against FBS competition.

Look for ND to run rampant early and often, and feast on play action and quick passes in space, allowing their athletes to make plays after the catch. I predict Merriweather has two TDs in this game, with ND trying to force feed him to get his confidence rolling. Defensively, I don't see many issues keeping TSU in check.

TL;DR
My prediction: ND 65, TSU 7.

Tough one...How long will the starters play? Will Freeman want to run up the score?

I accidentally voted for 35-41 instead of 42-48. Oh well.

On further reflection I should have gone even higher. I'm not sure ND will be able to stop scoring on them.

I said 35-41 because my prediction is exactly 41.

55-14

TSU will score.
If ND has actual students from the stands in the game, TSU will keep their starters in so they can score in ND stadium.

I’m taking my wife and daughters, so plan on being there long enough to see the pregame festivities, kickoff, a couple ND touchdowns, & couple pics of them at the game, & gone by 2nd Quarter.

ND 49-7

The guests will score a mercy TD way late. But the new clock rules make it really hard to get a 50-burger without a couple of short fields and/or a non-offensive touchdown (or two).

I do predict Angeli and Love comprise the backfield MUCH earlier than they did against Navy, though, and we actually get to see them run more of the offense.

I think it will be interesting to see how much the new clock rule impacts scoring and offensive output. Have to imagine there will be at least 10-12 less plays run per game I would think.

ND 41-7. I think they really take the foot off of the gas in the second half after being up 4+ scores in the first half.

From a google search.

the Football Rules Committee estimated it will trim seven or eight plays per game

If their offense is as bad as it sounds, idk if they’ll score. But, I’ll give them a mercy touchdown.

Hartman and co. are way too much for TSU, as they go into halftime up 45-0. Angeli starts the entire second half and scores a couple times.

Notre Dame: 59
Tennessee St: 7

I’m gonna laugh when it’s 17-13 in the 3rd quarter

I'm not going to laugh if that's the score in the 3rd.

My Prediction is pain. Scheduling our first FCS opponent brings the desired results. This is a glorified walk through for the guys.

63-10.

Don't see Freeman running up the score and pantsing an FCS school. I think there is respect for TSU. this one turns out to be a try out for the lower depth chart players toward the middle of the 3rd quarter. TSU scores on a late 4th quarter TD and they have reason to celebrate.

Don't think ND shows too much for game analysis for future opponents.

Defense scores two touchdowns. Hartman and Estime play more than most would expect and this site goes into meltdown.

ND 42 - 10

I don't want to see him run up the score, per se, but I do hope that once the 2s get in, he leaves the playbook open. If we're up 35 points and he puts Angeli in with 15 minutes to play and just runs a vanilla offense, I'll actually be pretty irritated. He's got 11-13 more games to develop him as much as possible before we have a lot of questions at QB.

If that means we score 2 more garbage time TDs, so be it, not our fault TSU can't hang with our 2s. They know what they signed up for when they agreed to this game. Get paid handsomely to get annihilated
