These were my top four guys, but I feared they might not name Sam (because so new.)
I am delighted with these four. (Tyree was admittedly my "admirational" choice, but I
prefer captains to be sure-things on the field as well as the locker room if possible. I
also like it when a DLineman stands up, but I didn't see the candidate.) The fact that
these are the Choices of the Players voids anything else regardless.

Seems to me like 4 is a low number and the number of captains has been higher before.

All eyes are always on the Notre Dame QB, I think Sam has handled the situation exceptionally well since arriving at ND & deserves to be a captain.

I would agree with those saying that Tyree deserves to be a captain.

It’s no hate on Hartman. I’m a huge fan and love that he’s our QB.

But I look at a guy like Chris Tyree. He hasn’t been able to live up to the expectations that recruiting sites, and fans, put on him. I don’t think he was utilized correctly by Rees. He had every reason to transfer. What does he do? Moves to receiver and works his ass off in the offseason to make sure he’s an asset in the passing game. Now he’s basically a guaranteed starter and one of Hartman’s favorite targets.

I think some people take guys like Tyree for granted. Players like Chris Tyree and Avery Davis are hard to find these days.

That’s a good story… doesn’t equate to being any form of leader. Not saying he isn’t.

Personally tyree doesn’t seem like the one leading players in anything. Not a dig, just seems like a low key personality on and off field.

Which is fine. There’s other ways to be a leader than being vocal. If being vocal is all it took, Nana and Onye would be 4x captains lol

Right… but there aren’t reports of him being some great “lead by example” person for workouts or wr room or
Rb room. He did what like 20k jug catches himself

Again, not trying to throw digs at him but there hasn’t been any signs or reports that he’s a great leader

Tyree has another year of eligibility, I think. He’ll be a captain next year, I’d wager.

The offense won in a scrimmage on Saturday and now the Irish will shift their attention toward the season opener against Navy.

Pete echoing most of what has been trickling around.

- Coogan and Spindler the surprise emergents at guard. Freeman talked about being confident in three guards that can play at any time, but it was unclear if Schrauth or Kristofic is the third guy, and which is the fourth that still needs to show he can help during games. Id imagine Schrauth is the guy they still don’t know they can count on to play at any time, based on Kristofic’s experience, but not 100% certain.

- Still waiting on a go-to WR to emerge. You know Thomas, Tyree and Merriweather will catch passes by default to start the year, but nobody is an alpha yet… and you’d hope to find one to take advantage of the year you have Hartman (though, devil’s advocate, this is THE year where you can probably survive on a spread-the-wealth basis, too, so….). Stock trending slightly down until someone emerges/steps up/turns it on.

- Tackles as good as advertised, Zeke an important veteran at center, even if small and physically leaving some things to be desired.

- Estime did not participate in the big scrimmage, and surprisingly no mention of Payne as a backup… he mentioned that Ford, Price, and Love each had their moments, and that the run game looked fine even with backup RB’s and different combos at guard. I wonder if Payne has locked down #2 duties already, and this is about finding #3 and #4?

- The buzz on Onye and Rubio as legit options behind Mills and Cross is for real, so much so that the interior might suddenly be the place to watch for generating pressure on opposing QB’s while the Vypers figure things out behind Botelho and while NaNa and JJB settle into a rotation.

- The depth at CB is so good that maybe it has been understated, particularly if Harper and Lewis combine to create a decent nickel situation. They’re legit four-deep on the outside with Gray’s sudden emergence the past two weeks and Mickey getting his confidence back.

- Oddly, no mention of safety at all, which could be a good thing?

From what I've seen mentioned multiple times by the Tims on II is that Price is 100% the 2a RB but all of them will get play time.

I would wager that right now it's Estime 1. Price 2a and Payne 2b. But it might be more of a "2b" by committee until everything shakes out. So much talent there it's really exciting.

I’m an offensive lineman. I’ve coached QBs, TEs, OLs, DLs, LBs, and STs, at various levels from youth to HS varsity and small college. Each position group has its own nuance and importance.

That said, there should be an offensive lineman represented in your captaincy every year. No group quite sets or determines the fate of a program like the OL. I have no doubt that Zeke Correll will continue to lead and I have no doubt that Joe Alt will likely wear the C next year…but that’s just personal to me. A Hawg should be a captain every year. Period. If you’ve never played or coached OL, you just can’t understand. It’s a unique position group with a unique mindset that above all encompasses the ideal of team over self.

If Joe Alt is projecting as a potential top 5 pick after this year (which I've seen a few early predictions already list him), he should go to the NFL and not stay another year.

The third guard is Billy, the fourth is wide open… sounds like kristofic having a bad camp

Yeah. I'm not trying to call anyone out. But the idea Joe Alt will be playing for the Irish next year is entirely unrealistic. He would be getting terrible advice.

And he's awesome, but he's not traipsing into an NFL locker room and getting a C patched on his jersey automatically.


Its likely we have Fish here next year and we should be really happy about that. (But maybe not if this team shocks the world!)

If the guard situation gets sorted and the interior d line lives up to some of the hype that’s been circulating I could see ND stuffing Ohio State in a trash can in the same manner that Michigan has the last two seasons.

I mean, it doesn't help that your best interior player and offensive captain misses that game and they have to pretty much get Kristofic ready in like 2 days.

Also, Fisher was coming off an injury and had half a game of experience. Lugg was known to be very physically limited and there were questions if he could be even a solid guard/tackle. It also probably would've helped if ND didn't move Correll to guard in '21, so he'd have more experience at center going into the year. Still don't understand that move.

The tackles have A LOT more experience, as does Correll at center, and the guards will have the full fall camp + 4 games of experience before they have their first massive litmus test.
