They just don't have a true second threat nor a reliable 3pt shooter. Can't win against good teams consistently with that.

Disagree on the both ends of the court part. They held NC St to 59 points, well below their season average. The Irish also won the rebound battle. If you would told me those to things happened before the game I would have banked that as an easy win.

43 points on 27% shooting is embarrassing.

Totally agree on Watson OMM, but it seems like there is a lot of that “Zen” missing on the team. No one shoots with a very high percentage under the basket or in the paint, and the outside shooting is just way too streaky. Would be inclined to agree with NDAccountant but don’t know who the first threat would be within the offense. HH needs a lot of work on her shooting, most of scoring comes off her defensive disruption, or getting to the basket or the free throw line in transition. Offensive sets look really week with no true scorer.

I do think HH is a number one threat, but the last two games I think she’s finally hit her freshman wall. She looks exhausted and equally in pain leading to low percentage. Before that, she could score pretty easily from any level of the floor.

Sonia is plenty capable of being a second scoring threat, but that’s not materialized since she’s come back from injury. She looks tentative on the offensive end. My guess is it has to do with two things, still not mentally over the injury she sustained and not fully in sync with Hannah. It looks like the two of them don’t know how to play with each other.

I agree with the offensive sets. Both Louisville and NC St have found ways to disrupt the sets and it seems the coaches have not been able to make adjustments.

i think coach Ivey needs to go back to the princeton offense that worked so well for coach Mcgraw because whatever this is that she brought with her from the NBA is too easy for good teams to figure out and stop.

Irish went 3-0 with wins against Duke, Clemson and BC. With upsets yesterday occurring to Louisville and NC St we now sit in a three way tie for 3rd. We’ve got two tough home games remaining against VT and Louisville. Need to at least win one of those to get a top 4 finish and a doubl bye in the ACC tourney.

On a discouraging note, Nat Marshall was out with an ink for yesterday’s game. Hopefully she’ll be back this week.

Agree on the Sonia take, she is not the player she was last year. And Hannah is hitting the wall and Westbeld is inconsistent and not able to carry us game to game. BC game was an abomination; we couldn't hit a wide open shot to save our lives (why does DeWolfe even play?) but neither could BC and Westbeld eventually got it together.

Adds up to a couple of losses to end the season no double bye and not home court in the NCAAs.

I could be wrong, but think it would have to take some significant mental gymnastics to come up with a plausible scenario ND gets top four with another loss. If they win both they are guaranteed top 4.

Looking at the schedules of the teams tied in that 3rd spot.
NC St.- vs. Syracuse, vs. Wake Forest. Both are at home, but they could easily go 1-1 with a loss to Syracuse
Louisville- vs. FSU, at ND- toss up on what happens
FSU- at Louisville, vs. Clemson- either 1-1 or 2-0.

So at least one of those teams has a guaranteed loss. It's not incomprehensible to see each team in that 3rd spot go 1-1. Looks like we are currently in the 5th spot on tie breaker but if we beat Louisville could we jump them with a split? Not sure what the tie breaker there would be.

I could be wrong, but think tie breaker after head to head is then head to head differences with the #1 seed and below. In this specific case, for ND to be split over last two games and not lose head to head with Lville, it would mean a loss to VT.

So both UL and ND would have lost to VT, the #1 seed. So comparison would move to #2 seed, which say is Cuse. UL beat Cuse so they would get the nod ahead of us. Best case is UL loses to both FSU and ND and ND splits with UL and VT. But that is the only way I see ND getting 4 seed with a loss in next two.

Citron has completely lost her shot and is a liability on D since the injury

Ladies are looking good so far. Missed a few bunnies rushing the shot, but their D is making up for it

This aged well! 21, all in the second half, no way we beat Va Tech unless she comes alive! Way to turn it around Sonia!

She must be a reliable scorer for us to make a run in the tournament. Hopefully she is gaining confidence in the knee.

If there was ever a "team" win, this is it. The defensive game plan was masteful by the coaching staff. They had the players ready to execute, and they did. I've been impressed with the defense most of the season and tonight was no exception.

I've been pretty frustrated with Watson all season, and certainly she didn't contribute much on the offensive side, but she was fantastic against Kitley on defense in the first half. Then Westbeld was equally impressive against her in the second. I hope we see the same thing against Louisville on Sunday, especially since Walz is probably my least favorite coach in WBB.

huge win and now the big question is does Hannah Hildalgo win ACC player of year award over the VT center with tonight's performance to go along with what else she has done this year.

No Hannah won't win it but she won't lose to Kitley, I don't even know if Kitley is in the running to be honest. I think it will go to Fair at Syracuse. She for sure will get Rookie of the Year though. Probably 2nd or 3rd in ACC POY.

Edit*- My bad, I didn't realize Kitley was averaging a double double. Last I looked, I thought she was only averaging 13 a game. But I still think Fair is gonna win it this year.

Ladies have struggled against the top teams so it was good to see them get one. A win against Louisville might be the thing for a good tournament run.

That's the best energy I've seen them play with in quite some time. They were definitely dialed in for that game. Now, go beat Louisville to grab a 3 seed in the ACC tournament, and then hopefully win another game or two to secure a 4 seed, and home court advantage in the Tourney!

I was most impressed with how they never panicked. VT made a couple of runs in the second half that got the game to four, yet the ladies responded both times with clutch baskets and rebounds to push the lead back to 9 or 10.

I'm running out of words that properly describe Hannah Hidalgo and her game. She broke the ACC freshman scoring record last night. She is already at the level of Arike, Lloyd, Diggins, etc. She'll blow past that level next year.

Across all sports, I can't remember a freshman athlete this electric at Notre Dame.

I’d say it’s more they struggle against teams with superior athleticism across all five spots. I believe OMM pointed this out a month ago against UCONN and I saw the same thing last night against VT, both those teams didn’t have the athletes to break down our defense. Which put us in a lot of advantageous spots on offense. Both Sonia and Hannah could also get to the paint pretty regularly last night which is always advantageous on offense.

Against teams like Louisville, Syracuse and NC St, we don’t have the athletic advantage and struggle at times on both ends of the floor. Coaches really need to figure out how to scheme up some good offense against Louisville for Sunday.

Watched the whole game, great D and nice to see the team playing at that level. Much needed win for the resume and psyche.

We would need NC ST to lose Sunday for us to have a chance at a 3 seed, they play wake forest at home, so I don’t see that happening unfortunately.

4 seed then? I thought I heard they could still get the double bye in the ACC?

Yep. It's either play Louisville in the quarterfinals as the 4 seed or the 5 seed. Obviously we want the that 4 seed and the double bye.
