my thoughts after last nights game:

1) I'm more convinced than ever that Freeman can win big here at ND. I didnt feel like the moment was too big for him. Calm, fired up, and had the boys redy for the game. Anyone that thought this '22 team was set up to be a championship contending team off the rip was kidding themselves. Freeman didnt look overwhelmed in the least bit.
2) Defense is solid. They did a great job giving multiple intricate looks. I think the drop 9 and the double safety blitzes were the only bad calls. Otherwise Stroud was flustered. Multiple double cluthces. Never felt comfortable. That is becuase our D was causing him issues.
3) Our Dline was underwhelming I thought. Granted, they definitely got tired and those 3rd downs where Stroud scrambled and found recievers breaking open late and making great catches didnt help. But I felt like we had a better rotation than the one we were given.
4) Offensively the same issues are there. The only hope I have is that Buchner can learn how to make broken plays happen. Not that he needs to leave the pocket every play. But be able to move outside the pocket to make plays happen. That last drive he threw one into the dirt to Lenzy, but he had the guy and it would have been a good first down play. If he can learn how to do that at a high level, he should be fine.
5) OL needs to get their ish figured out. Not sure if its a talent issue. Not sure if its a communication issue. But they need to gel, and fast. That looked like early last year. Can't have it.

My biggest takeaway though:

Fowler is an absolute douche. If he comes to the Irsay YMCA for the brawl, I will fly in from Utah to punch him in the face.

1. Too conservative on offense. Then the one drive they decided to get aggressive, they should have pounded Estime instead based on field position.

2. Great game plan defensively, but failed to adjust mid-drive when Ohio State broke their backs with the run.

3. Golden got aggressive at exactly the wrong time, too. Need the staff to get some cohesion going… but that was a tough environment to expect it to happen.

4. FB dive for a touchdown. Tommy gets a pass for the lack of attacking the seam for that alone.

5. Attack the seam more if you’re going to insist on letting teams crowd the box. Throw over their heads, punish the run blitz. Safeties filtering down should be money for Mayer and/or a slot receiver.

6. Go 11-1 and get a rematch.
The opening drive of the second half killed the Irish. Great field position along with two personal fouls on OSU, and nothing to show for

Does anyone know if Patterson returning this season had any sort of contingency (in his favor) for playing guard to make him more valuable in the draft? I guess what I want to know is if there's anything stopping them from putting him back at center moving forward?

Based on what? You’re saying you’ve seen enough football half way through week 1 to know that while ND may not be better than OSU, Bama or UGA that they are also nowhere near the other unnamed seven teams that comprise the top 10? If so, you need to share your picks going forward b/c u should be able to kill it in
Agreed but it’s not often that it happens in year one much less in game one. I’ll be curious to see how they progress the rest of the year. It’s still too early to fire coaches & cut players.
I wouldn’t get my hopes up if I were you

I’m assuming him showcasing at guard is to show the NFL his versatility? Not to mention, 1 center per starting 11 vs 2 guards.

Who the fuck is talking 6 wins? That person clearly doesn’t see
I’ve seen a few,… I’m still where I was before the game,… 8-9 wins. If anything the defense made me think they can win more but yeah, the offense has got to open up

Show me, please. That’s just nonsense.

Buch and the O is about to go nuts. This will be a much different team come playoff time.

Couldn’t run the ball against a weak OSU D with a young qb. Game over

I've heard this from Irish fans prior to the game as though it is an unquestioned fact. Last season, Ohio State finished ranked HIGHER than Notre Dame did in rushing defense. To suggest that OSU is a "weak OSU D" is fanspeak and not factual at all. There are 3 things that lead to either a bad position group or offense or defense. Poor scheme, Poor coaching/development, talent issues, or some combination of those 3. ANYONE suggesting OSU doesn't have the talent on the roster is clearly someone not following recruiting.

Over the last 5 recruiting classes, OSU has not had a class ranked below #5 with that many kids, you can eliminate talent.

Buckner is going to be a STUD but he is a FRESHMAN in one of the most hostile stadiums he will likely ever play in against a team LOADED with ELITE talent. Frankly, I thought OSU was going to beat ND badly and the fact that your defense is as good as it is is a testament to how good Golden and Freeman actually are.

What I saw last night was a defense that is going to be a problem for every opposing offense they face this season. OSU was down 2 starting WR's and that affected the passing game. OSU has an elite OL and in the fourth they wore down the front of ND and was able to escape with an 11 point win.

ND is going to be VERY good this season. It was game one on the road.

Because Homers like the Irritable Bowels (IB) Nation want to protect Tommy at all cost and think that getting rid of BK would "unleash the offense" in some naïve Homer rant.

Reality is now setting in that merely hiring an unexperienced HC in Marcus Freeman will not in itself be a "Gap Closing" act.

Time to load up on the Built Bars because its going to take 3 years. At least 2 for Freeman to realize Rees is the problem and another year to get an Al Golden type on the Offense to help get Freeman closer to a Top 3 program.
Yep, and they all downvoted your post. The Rees-baiters. Wonder if they still have my posts bookmarked.

Honest question. Is Styles kind of slow? I was very underwhelmed on that opening play with him in the open field.
Looked to me that he held up for a split second. I thought if he had kept his foot on the gas he might have beat the DB

Not absolving TR by any stretch of the imagination but that IOL, especially after JPatt left, didn’t instill any confidence that Buchner could drop back and deliver a dime. Seems like most times they did, he had defenders in his face.

Im assuming they tried to keep the game plan simple, albeit too simple, to limit Buchner’s chances of a turnover. Incredibly difficult environment to let TB loose.

Not defending the game plan. Just trying to have a balanced view point.
They need Jpatt back to center & possibly new Guards, Buchners best passes were his deep shots & he got hit on almost every pass he attempted except on a couple role outs.

Tommy needs to put his big boys pants on because he called the game like a unic, zero guts. Very basic schematically.

No staes, rairidon or Merriweather at least put some athletes on the field for TB to throw the ball up for 50/50 shots.

Tommy better grow some hair on his chest come next weekend, perfect game for the Offense to get into a groove & put 60 on the scoreboard

And then we have the haters that can’t analyze the game because they only focus on the negative.

Mike Frank just did his game rewatch notes and swear to god 50%+ of the bad plays in some form involve Correll fucking up. The drop off from Patterson to him is insane.
Doesn’t surprise me. I was watching the interior a lot and the issues were constant.

Would have loved to be in the same room as HH watches the game film.

A lot of people were worried about this. And bringing HH back. Looks like those people were right.

Re watching the game right now & I can’t believe how many times our WRs were left in single coverage & we took almost ZERO deep shots..

Mannn we really could have won this game..

I think ND was a few plays short of winning this game. I agree about the deep shots, but why no short passes? I don't get why people are ripping on our WR's, I thought Buchner played worse than our WR's.

But the sky is not falling, ND only lost by 11 points to the #2 in the country.

I’m of the opinion that if we had an offense with half a pulse, we would’ve beaten Ohio State 35-21. I think it’s entirely possible that our defense is really damn good and our offense just royalty stinks.

Well said, and fair. Stick around. Your team played a hell of a game last night. Buckeyes had too much talent on D to remain down for long. It just took a good coach to right the ship.

Who is #77 on OSU? He did a pretty cringe-inducing mock in Ademilola's face when the teams were shaking hands at the end of the game.
