Class of 2020 Houston (Tex.) North Shore running back Zachary Evans is heading to TCU, according to HornedFrogBiltz sources. The 247Sports Composite five-star is the highest-rated player TCU has ever landed.

According to sources, Evans signed a financial aid agreement with the Frogs on Sunday night, but had to attend an online class on Monday morning before it became official. TCU started their first summer session on Monday as the COVID-19 pandemic has forced students away from campus.

Evans is the first five-star recruit to choose TCU in the modern recruiting era. He was ranked No. 16 overall in the 2020 class. Former quarterback Justin Rogers was ranked No. 43 overall in 2018. Evans will be able to compete as a true freshman during the 2020 football season.

Landing the Texas prep certainly had twists and turns during his recruitment.

Evans originally signed with Georgia during the early signing period but was released from his National Letter of Intent. He never made it to Georgia’s campus and was granted a full release with no restrictions. His recruitment began to look like a puzzle during the week of the Under Armour All-American Game. He was supposed to announce his decision during the broadcast, but the announcement never happened.

A month prior to the non-announcement, Evans was sent home before the Class 6A Division I state championship game by his coach, for reportedly not giving up his phone. Evans later apologized for his actions.

After getting his release from Georgia, LSU and Texas A&M became the frontrunners in his recruitment. He visited both programs for official visits during the fall; LSU in late October and Texas A&M in mid-November. He received an in-home visit from Aggies head coach Jimbo Fisher on December 11.

Other schools that began to pursue Evans following his release from Georgia were Ole Miss, Tennessee and Florida. Evans visited Ole Miss and Tennessee in back-to-back weeks in January. He was scheduled to take an official visit to Florida on March 20 before the NCAA restricted visits. Auburn was another school that had become a school of interest for Evans according to some reports.

However, TCU quietly became an option behind the recruitment of head coach Gary Patterson and other coaches from his staff. Sources told HornedFrogBlitz that TCU had actually been building a strong relationship with Evans for well over a month.

The 5-foot-11, 200-pounder finished the 2020 recruiting cycle as the No. 16 overall player in the nation and No. 2 running back according to the 247Sports composite rankings. He was also rated as the No. 1 player in Texas according to the composite rankings.

During his recruitment Evans compiled over 40+ offers including Texas A&M, Tennessee, Texas, LSU, Ole Miss, LSU, Auburn, Baylor, Michigan, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Oregon and USC among many others.

The addition of Evans puts TCU at an even more phenomenal finish in the recruiting rankings despite a 5-7 season in 2019. With his addition, the Frogs class would bounce up to No. 23 in the final team rankings according to the 247Sports composite rankings. The Frogs had six four-star players in the class with their top three signees as offensive prospects.

Evans is the third running back in the class; he joins Oklahoma City (OK) Bishop McGuinness’Dominic Richardson and Mount Enterprise (TX) running back Kendre Miller.

Evans had a huge high school career, helping North Shore to two consecutive Class 6A state championship games. For his career Evans rushed for 4,867 yards with 76 touchdowns.

Hard to believe ND doesn't offer and chase a guy from one of the premier Catholic programs in the country. This is a guy who openly admits he chose Clemson in large part because of the faith aspect Dabo injects into the program. Seems ND could've matched that plus has a strong contingent of Poly guys on the roster.

Overcoming being the heir to Watson & Lawrence may have been more problematic.

If I remember correctly Pine was a top 50 recruit early in the 2020 cycle. Fell in the rankings after he had already to committed to ND. Regardless, I’m hoping he wins the job for 2021. More arm talent and better wheels than Clark.

My guess is he dropped because he Committed early and is the only 4* QB that is undersized. He had offers from all the SEC elite including Bama and schools like Oklahoma and Mich.

247’s write up on him is promising:

Lacks size of prototypical pocket passer. Has some dual threat ability. Runs 4.7 in 40. Productive in high school with 6:1 TD/INT ratio. Quick release. Superb touch on intermediate passes. Drops balls between linebackers and defensive backs. High understanding of offensive concepts. Pocket presence is impressive. Feels pressure and moves in pocket. Can extend plays. Arm strength needs work. Accuracy is inconsistent on deep balls. Uses a lot of body power to make throws down field and on deep outs. Multi-year starter at high-level program. Could develop into an NFL free agent.

Dabo talked about DJ’s recruitment. DJ was actually the first to express interest. I’m pretty sure Clemson was his top choice.

Just watched both Pyne and Clark's senior highlights. Tough to watch both of the below videos and not come away thinking Clark is the better prospect. For whatever reason I thought Pyne had a little more Spencer Rattler in him than he does.

Honestly think Pyne's junior year highlights were better than his senior year. Looks like New Canaan rarely threw the ball down the field his senior year. Definitely is a very accurate passer but yeah the lack of arm strength is pretty apparent. Probably similar to Book athleticism wise. I can see why 247 ended up rating him a 87 by the end of the cycle. Would be curious to hear what Bama, USC, LSU, etc... thought of him at the time of their offers.

Clark definitely isn't polished but has a damn strong arm, some size and speed, and loves contact. Really tough to watch these highlights and think Pyne was the kid that colleges loved more. Think i'm rooting for him for 2021.
