OK so you're fine with Trump unilaterally dismantling the post office in the middle of the pandemic because it could help him in the election. That's what I figured.

The idea that it "isn't really a story" when it has been top trending news basically everywhere for multiple days; has Republican legislators speaking out against him on it; and has lawsuits being filed by state governments is a pretty good joke. I don't know what news you get (OANN? InfoWars?) but it's being covered in length everywhere from right-leaning publications (Washington Times, Wall Street Journal, etc.) to the center and left leaning ones.

It's not a good look for DJT.

On a side note, the USPS delivery service in my area has been horrendous for a while. Some days our mail doesn't arrive until 7:00 - 7:30. Sometimes we don't get mail for a couple of days. Speaking to our mailman, he said he's working 10-12 days regularly. They don't have enough people to deliver it on time. The USPS needs to either stop providing delivery service for Amazon or charge them more so they can hire more mailmen to deliver the mail.

It's going to be a wild couple months. Voting in a pandemic is weird... we saw the Kentucky primary take multiple weeks to sort out because of the amount of absentee ballots that needed to be counted. Primaries, in general, are all about turnout and passion, and nobody really knows how suppression of in person voting is going to affect those this year. Does widespread absentee voting actually make it easier to get involved in elections? Or is it going to end up with lower overall turnout than last cycle?

I think in person voting will be up even with COVID.

Yeah it's incredibly interesting. You would think all the people willing to protest for BLM would consider the election to be another life or death cause so they would vote in person. The COVID only kills 0.1% screw the side effects crowd will vote in person too. Will the pandemic suppress the vote of the people on the fence?

On a side note- Up here before an election we get a card mailed to our address that details all the voting options and you gotta have it when you vote in person. It also has a unique code for requesting a mail in option. Of course we stil have issues with reaching people with no fixed address, but on the whole it seems to be ok. Do you guys do something like that down there?

Nah, we are in the dark ages. States can't even agree on voter ID laws. There is an incredible amount of politicking about American voting because different processes drastically benefit different demographic groups which tend to vote certain ways.

To be fair, it's crazy to read the Trump thread and not see a peep of the biggest news story the past few days. In the past few weeks:
-A Trump advisor went on television and said that "voting rights" are a liberal pipe dream.
-Trump said out loud that he is attacking the USPS and withholding money so that they can't process mail in ballots.
-Trump dismantled USPS leadership.
-Trump is removing mail sorting machines from USPS mail facilities for no apparent reason.
-USPS has confirmed that with their current disruption and delays from the executive branch that they can't process absentee ballot requests. Now legislators on both sides of the aisle are upset, and there are pending lawsuits to extend voting deadlines.

In recent polls, people who intend to vote absentee said they are voting against Trump by a 2-to-1 margin. So he's literally trying to steal an election. This isn't conjecture, it's what he admitted he is trying to do in his own words with statements on "voter fraud," not accepting the election results, wanting the winner declared night of to be "legitimate," and his actions to make absentee voting impossible.

I'd love to hear anyone -- Trump supporter or otherwise -- come up with an alternative explanation for why he is gutting the post office besides the reasons Trump has already said himself (i.e. the election). It's brazen, but no one seems to care because it helps "their guy".

Agreed. It looks pathetic & desperate...which it is. Why not promote absentee voting? I’m not read up on this b/c it’s never been an issue for me to get out and physically vote but wouldn’t absentee voting offer the same benefit as mail-in voting w/ more security?

I’ll be voting 3rd party/write-in for the third election in a row so the Biden Bros can keep ignoring his & Kamala’s faults/hypocracies & the Trumpers can do the same for DJT. Enjoy your shit sandwich b/c neither side has the moral high ground. Arguing otherwise just proves your partisan mentality.

We could use the Texas GOP Platform as the goals for future government by the GOP.

The Texas GOP Platform
- would abolish the Voting Rights Act
- repeal the 17th Amendment in which popular vote elected Senators because of bought and sold concerns previously. If popular vote should not determine who is in the U.S. Senate from states, why should popular vote determine who is President?
- opposition to any initiative or referendum vote because it is a form of socialism
- Equal Rights in voting and divisions of voting districts should be determined by individual states not the federal government or SCOTUS.

Keeping these in mind, why would you expect Republican congressmen to object to Trump's actions?

Maybe these goals can be attained partially or fully in four more years.

I think all voting should be in person on election day unless you have a good excuse for a mail in ballot or early voting. And you should have to show ID to do it. Early voting is available weeks in advance - not that hard to do so I don't understand why everyone is so bent out of shape about getting off their grandma's couch at some point over a three week period to go vote. If the right is so damn important you shouldn't feel so damn inconvenienced to exercise it.

Plus - I put my ballot in the machine and it is counted, zero people between me and that submission. God only knows how many people have access to a mail in ballot or if they ever get counted.

Don't know much about Trump attacking the Post Office but equally obvious mail in ballots are a scam waiting to happen. Sounds petty and wrong but that is how every story about him is slanted so..... stop crying wolf maybe?

This blows my mind, I get the gerrymandering over districts (typical US stuff) and what not but the legit ability to vote?

Also, why can't their be a 3 week rolling period of voting? Like based on your birth month you can go to the poll station and the day of the week is based on age cohort. Shouldn't that be the Trump rebuttal to doing mail in voting, like give a safe alternative to at least show you tried???

Trump's dismantling of the US Post Office continues to make headlines. Completely brazen, he just destroyed hundreds of millions to billions of dollars in mail sorting machinery for no reason except that he wants to try to rig an election.

According to @maddow tonight, 502 sorting machines costing millions of dollars are being removed and scrapped. It's gotten so bad that in addition to dominating the news cycle on every legitimate news network and media outlet, you now have crossover into pop culture:

He's putting millions of Americans' lives at risk? How, by forcing them to go to public polling places with sectioned off voting booths? I thought Republicans were supposed to be the fear mongers? So Taylor supports the large protests, but people going out to vote puts lives at risk. Okay.

Pretty interesting that you have no outrage over a billion dollars of public property destruction to kneecap the post service; but Taylor Swift talking about potential health risks draws your ire.

And on top of COVID, Trump destroying mail sorting machines and intentionally slowing down the post service is delaying delivery of things like prescription medicine. But hey, that’s not important to public health either, right? Ends justify the means as long as your guy wins.

Public property destruction only matters if it's a statue for a guy from 1847. Voting machines go brrrrrrrr!

There isn’t. Trump outright stated he’s doing it to handicap the Post Office and make voting by mail impossible come November. His words.

Totally bizarre there isn't any outrage, especially from IE's self proclaimed moderates (lol).

In terms of cohorts that are hoping for mail in ballots, what's the feel down there? I would think the people protesting will vote, and the #FireFauci crowd will vote - but the mail in ballots, wouldnt the more vulnerable older cohort want those? Who are traditionally republican?

I was looking through the candidates on the VoteVet.org website. Eight of the nine Senatorial candidates are Democrats.

Dan Feehan is running for Representative for the Minnesota District 1 covering southern Minnesota. What he has done is remarkable. He was inspired to become an active duty soldier due to 9/11. He completed two combat tours of duty as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In Iraq, I searched for roadside bombs and led a scout and sniper team that captured dangerous terrorists who threatened Americans and Iraqis alike, earning the Bronze Star for Service, the Army Commendation Medal with Valor, and the Ranger Tab. He continued service after discharge. Irish, Catholic. Lost to the current incumbent in 2018 by 1200 votes.

Mo Davis is running for Representative for the North Carolina 11th district, representing western NC. Moe Davis is a retired Air Force Colonel, former Chief Prosecutor at Guantanamo Bay, Director of the Air Force Judiciary, national security specialist for Congress, law professor, judge, speaker, writer and expert. His military honors include the Legion of Merit, six Meritorious Service Medals, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Headquarters Air Force Judge Advocate of the Year award.
https://moedavisforcongress.com/meet-moe/

Adrian Perkins is running for the Senate seat in Louisiana. Perkins grew up in Shreveport and was also inspired to join after 9/11, seeking an appointment to US Military Academy. While at West Point, Perkins was elected class president, the first African American cadet to graduate to serve as class president in the 215-year history of the institution. Perkins was selected to be a Tillman Scholar by the Pat Tillman Foundation. He attended Harvard Law School, where he earned his Juris Doctor and served as president of the student government. He completed eight years of active duty, becoming a Ranger. He returned to Shreveport and is now their mayor.

Lol I always thought lax was a great poster on this board until he shared a tweet from Taylor Swift. Poor lax.

There is no reason you can’t get out and vote Corona or not. I 100% agree that there will be cheating on. Both sides of the isle and of you don’t believe that than you are a moron. This is just another area Trump is going to far he knows it and his team knows it. Incidents like this cost him votes when he could just shut up for a few mins and win this election just like he did last time.

People on here are pretending this isn't a story. It's been all over everywhere, and I shared a Taylor Swift quote with a half a million likes as an example of this being widely discussed. Not really sure why that's offensive or controversial.

Trump destroying hundreds of millions of dollars of Post Office equipment for no reason other than to disrupt an election, not sure there is Democrat equivalent. If there is, I'm all ears. I agree Democrats often try to angle shoot in ways to help them (e.g. undocumented immigrants voting, ballot harvesting, etc.)

Prove that there has been cheating from the left. There are clearly-documented cases of voter fraud on the Republican side, including Trump voting from Florida.

I think people get away with this "both sides are bad" stuff with nothing but hearsay and inference.

From CNN.com

(CNN)The US Postal Service plans to remove hundreds of high-volume mail-processing machines from facilities across the country, leading some postal workers to fear they may have less capacity to process mail during election season.

Documents obtained by CNN indicate 671 machines used to organize letters or other pieces of mail are slated for "reduction" in dozens of cities this year. The agency started removing machines in June, according to postal workers.
While the reductions come amid decreased mail volume this year and are described by some postal officials as making the service more cost-effective, the effort overlaps with other actions implemented by the Postal Service that workers have blamed for delivery delays. The new procedures were described in a July memo and include staff hours being cut.

The removals are also occurring as President Donald Trump has relentlessly attacked voting by mail, falsely claiming that the practice leads to mass fraud. Amid the pandemic, a record number of voters are expected to cast their ballots by mail this fall. Trump said Thursday that he opposes additional funding for the Postal Service because he doesn't want to see it used for mail-in voting this November, though he later said at a news conference that he would not veto a bill that included the funding.

The Postal Service said in a statement that it "routinely moves equipment around its network as necessary to match changing mail and package volumes. Package volume is up, but mail volume continues to decline. Adapting our processing infrastructure to the current volumes will ensure more efficient, cost effective operations and better service for our customers."

But the Postal Service's own document calls the move a "reduction" of equipment. Postal workers in various locations said machines have been dismantled and that it wasn't immediately clear what the agency was doing with the parts.
