I predict they don’t occur. Hope I’m wrong.

Should be easy enough to pull off even with COVID. You don't really need an audience. Just the two experts, a moderator and cameramen.

My point is that Biden’s team surely doesn’t want to put him in a debate situation. Regardless of what I or others think about Trump, Biden won’t stand a chance on the debate stage. He’ll be stammering through every answer with nonsensical talking points. His only salvation will be the moderators bailing him out.

Agree, but if he refused to debate, that might hurt him almost as much.

I think they're both notorious stammerers, Biden comes off as your Gramps struggling through everyone's name and Trump spends 5 min contorting sentences around strongly and bigly.

If Biden can memorize his policy answers I think that'll be his spot to shine as I don't think Trump can articulate policy points sanely. If it's not policy based, Trump should easily cruse by.

Nah, if he refused to debate, his campaign would claim it was b/c Trump didn’t release his tax returns or that he retweeted a video that incl an idiot yelling “white power” from his car. Again, just my prediction, but I don’t think we have a debate (YES...DESPITE THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF 3 DEBATES). If they do debate, Ill pop plenty of popcorn b/c it will be must see tv.

Most agree Trump is an idiot who says/tweets regrettable stuff. Set that aside and go watch Biden articulate just about anything in the past six months. He can’t complete a sentence.

I am still not convinced Biden walks out of the Dem convention with the nomination unless he has Hillary as his VP.

Right, I acknowledged Biden's mental limitations. Trump may say more words, but it doesn't make it any more coherent. Except the insults, those are always on point lol.

I think the Dems are way beyond Hillary. I’ve seen a lot of speculation that it will be a far Left woman of color. Biden will be just be an empty suit. He’s already come out and said he’s simply a transition candidate w/ no eye on re-election. And...yes...EVERYONE is aware that Biden is not far left....but his presidency will be.

Who in America has not made up their mind about Trump? More than other years debates will be to persuade those small numbers of people who haven't in the swing states due to the electoral system. We have a good idea about how he would govern and lead the country for four more years.

You should’ve concluded this in the 2016 election. You know how millions of people voted Trump b/c they didn’t want to be responsible for Hillary’s victory (lesser of two turds)? This year will be the same. Those that have soured on Trump since voting against Hillary will now likely vote for Biden despite knowing he’s a walking corpse. Neither bring anything I am looking for in a POTUS to the table. Not one damn thing.

The folks that liked the Populist bluster that Trump espoused will stick by him. That said, with millions of Trump voters turned off and willing to vote for Biden plus the Democratic base with more incentive than ever to get out and vote, “awe shucks Uncle Joe” will win in a landslide IMO.

You’re welcome Legacy...you can now rest easy.

- I did conclude that in 2016 and that the Trump voters were being undercounted in the polls.
- FYI - I wasn't ever a Never Trumper
- Why I should thank you for your posted opinion is beyond me
- You have previously posted the same opinion, if I recall correctly

Need A Witness For Your Mail-In Ballot? New Pandemic Lawsuits Challenge Old Rules (Graphic in article shows "How States Verify Absentee/Mailed Ballots"

Excerpts:
With the widespread expansion of vote-by-mail this year in response to the pandemic, both major political parties and their allies are waging an intense legal battle to shape the rules around absentee and mail-in voting. The details matter a lot and could affect the outcome in November.

Dozens of lawsuits have been filed so far, with Democrats seeking to remove mail-in voting restrictions that they say are burdensome and unconstitutional, and Republicans trying to preserve laws they say protect against voter fraud.

Among the main targets are witness and signature requirements for absentee ballots — such as signing the envelope, or getting a witness or notary to sign it, or making sure the voter's signature is legible. Such requirements — which differ from state to state — can make all the difference in whether a ballot is counted or tossed aside.

If I don't sign my part of this, then they will throw your ballot out," Brenda Williams, a voting rights activist in Sumter County, S.C., explained to one voter she helped in the March primary. "It would not be counted at all, ever."

South Carolina is among a dozen states that usually require absentee voters to get a witness or notary to sign their ballots. Last week, a federal judge ruled that the South Carolina requirement could put voters' health at risk and suspended it for the June primary.

"We know that these signature requirements have already affected thousands of voters during the pandemic and our concern is that they'll affect thousands or even tens of thousands more as the election cycle continues," said Dale Ho, director of the ACLU's Voting Rights Project, who worked on this case and similar ones in Missouri and Virginia.

For example, Wisconsin rejected more than 14,000 absentee ballots cast in its April 7 primary because they lacked witness signatures.
As another example, from https://www.kansascity.com/news/politics-government/article244227082.html
Several large Missouri counties reported a surge in absentee ballots cast for the June 2 local elections, an increase officials attribute to safety concerns caused by the pandemic.

The temporary law, which expires after this year, allows anyone to vote by mail without an excuse if they get their ballot notarized.

If you fall into specific at-risk categories — over 65 years old, live in a long-term care facility, have a heart or lung condition, are immunocompromised, have diabetes or chronic kidney disease — the notary requirement is waived.

Absentee ballots may be returned to the local election authority in person or by mail, and must be received in the election office by the close of the election, 7 p.m. on Aug. 4.
Under the new law signed by Rep Gov Parson earlier this year, notaries are not prohibited from charging for a mail-in ballot.
So, if you don’t fall under one of the valid excuses to vote absentee or into an at-risk group, you can be charged a fee to notarize your ballot. Under previous law, notaries were forbidden to charge a fee for an absentee ballot.

House Seats flipped in 2018

House Seats flipped in 2018

Dems flipped thirty House seats and unseated Rep incumbents in 2018.

- In 2018, thirty House seats won by Rs, considered Republican districts by previous voting patterns and each voted for by Trump in 2016. Twenty-eight of those thirty were rated as Rep voting districts by previous voting patterns.
Minnesota District 7, which is rated R+10 meaning their voting exceeds average Rep voting by 10% points, displayed the greatest percentage change. Trump won the district by 30.8%. The Dem candidate for the district in 2018 by 4.3%.

- For 2020, Cook's rates sixteen of the thirty would be retained by Dems, rating them Lean, Likely or Sold Dem.

- The other fourteen districts are rated by Cook's as Toss-Ups. Additionally,, two "Toss-Up" seats have a Rep incumbent are rated Toss-Ups.

- Two other rating systems have only six of those thirty as Toss-Ups with the other twenty-four expected to be retained by Dems. One of them,Roll Call, is predicting a total of 233 House seats for the Dems and 196 seats for the Reps with six seats are Toss-Ups in their analysis.

Kansas Senate Primary

Kansas Senate Primary

The Most Bizarre Senate Race Is Happening in Kansas (Wash Monthly)

Republicans race to head off Kansas Senate nightmare (Politico)

A top Republican super PAC is set to roll out a $1.2 million ad buy in Kansas in an effort to promote Rep. Roger Marshall over former Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach in the Senate Republican primary next month.

Sunflower State PAC with ties to Dems has quietly reserved $850,000 for ads to support Kobach. The ad bashes Republican US Rep. Roger Marshall as a "phony" and "soft on Trump" and notes that Kobach is called "too conservative" who "won't compromise on building a wall" or "getting tough on China."

Kansas Senate Race Ads Approach $14M, Two-Thirds From PACs (US News and World Rpeort)

Kobach and Trump’s Spectacular Voter-Fraud Failure (Rolling Stone)

Trump has not endorsed either, but did try to call Kobach to try to get him to drop out while meeting with Marshall. Pompeo, who is from Kansas and served as a House Rep, was rumored to be a possible candidate but declined. Pompeo, who was a Kansas businessman in Wichita before becoming a politician has deep ties to the Koch brothers and received.such significant donations from them when running for House seat that he was termed the "Congressman from Koch".

Pompeo ran for the House after Citizens United decision in 2010. Overall, Koch Industries contributed $375,500 to Pompeo through his six-year congressional career, while the oil and gas industries total spent $1.1 million.

Notre Dame has withdrawn as the host for the first Presidential debate site (set for Sept 29).

The University of Michigan, host of the second debate (Oct 15) withdrew last month. The new site for that will be the Performing Arts center of Miami-Dade County in Miami, Florida.

I saw that. Seems odd. Why not do away with live audience. Just have the two nominees on stage...socially distanced of course...with a moderator asking questions....socially distanced of course? I think it would be fascinating to hear a debate w/o a live audience to feed off.

2020 Voting - Arizona

2020 Voting - Arizona

In the Arizona primary today, fewer Arizonans voted in person this year. However, the number of mail-in and early ballots exceeded total vote counts from the 2016 and 2018 primary elections. A change in state law allowed election officials to start tallying incoming ballots 14 days before Tuesday's primary rather than the usual seven.

Many voters dropped off their mail-in ballots rather than voting the traditional way Tuesday. One voting place in south Phoenix had two separate lines, one for mail-in ballots and one for in-person voters. They also had a drop-off site outside for people to drive up and drop off their ballots. Regular mail-in and drop off boxes are the way all-mail voting in Utah and Colorado do it.

Nearly 100 vote centers were open across metro Phoenix. Registered voters could cast a ballot at any of the locations. the county typically has about 500 places to vote, and voters have to report to their assigned precinct location.
This is the first time the county has conducted an all vote-center primary election. Voters could cast a ballot at any location and not only their assigned precinct. Polling places largely did not have lines, which in some elections in Maricopa County (Phoenix) in past years. Poll workers wore masks, face shields and gloves. Most voters wore masks as well, and some wore gloves.

As far as results, in the Rep primary for U.S. Senate Martha McSally won over Daniel McCarthy. McCarthy walked through his supporters party for him greeting supporters tailed by a team of security guards. McCarthy had a handgun tucked in the back of his pants' waistband. Masks and physical space were scarce. McCarthy told an Arizona Republic reporter and a photographer to remove their masks. “It’s all a hoax," he said. “Stop spreading fear.” Arizona's confirmed Covid cases are over 181,000 with over 3800 deaths. McSally's lead over McCarthy was over 260,000 votes.

In the race for Maricopa County sheriff, former Sheriff Joe Arpaio and his former deputy chief, Jerry Sheridan, were virtually tied in a four-way race in the Republican primary for sheriff.

Arizona officially became a battleground state in 2018, when McSally lost her 2018 Senate bid to Democrat Kyrsten Sinema. (Gov. Doug Ducey later appointed McSally to complete the late Sen. John McCain’s term.) Both McSally and Mark Kelly (D) have already spent north of $20 million on their campaigns and McSally still has $11 million to spend, while Kelly has $21 million. On top of that, independent campaign committees are expected to spend tens of millions more before the race is settled in November.

Medicaid Expansion Referendum - Missouri voters approved Medicaid expansion by 53 to 46 percent, becoming the 38th state to expand. Medicaid eligibility would expand to roughly 230,000 more low-income Missourians. Oklahoma voters approved Medicaid expansion on July 1. Medicaid expansion will likely help drive down the state's 14% uninsured rate, the second highest in the nation after Texas with enrollment potentially climbing even higher as millions lose their jobs amid the pandemic.

Trump criticized Arizona mail-in voting in Arizona in June in a rally in Phoenix, repeating false claims again.
“And there is tremendous evidence of fraud whenever you have mail-in ballots,. And frankly, if we are really going to protect our elections – and some people don’t want to hear this – we must have voter ID.”

A couple of the reasons Trump said mail-in voting was open to fraud were that mail carriers could be robbed of ballots, which then could be duplicated by foreign or domestic enemies.

Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs also disagreed that mail-in ballots aren’t safe.

“He’s flat out wrong. We have a long track record of successful and secure voting by mail in Arizona. Ballots are tracked when they leave the county recorder’s office to go to voters, and voters can find out the status of their ballots once they return it. So there’s a lot of safeguards in place.”

About 80% of Arizona voters receive ballots in the mail, according to the Citizens Clean Elections Commission.

After reversing himself, saying that mail-in voting in Florida is secure, Trump and his campaign is now suing to stop a Nevada law for mail-in voting in November.

Twenty-five percent of Americans voted [by mail] in the 2016 election. Mail-in voting is particularly popular among older and rural voters, who tend to favor Republicans.

A former aide to John McLain explained why they instituted mail-in voting in Arizona:
“We did it principally to encourage seniors and winter visitors who re-registered [in Arizona] to vote,. His base and Republicans are much better at returning ballots” by mail.

I suppose if he feels like he is losing or wants to try an taint the results, he tweets yelling "voter fraud". I thought he says there was no foreign interference in 2016. I did forget that Trump says he won the popular vote over Clinton because over 3 million people in New England voted fraudulently. If he could only control voting procedures.... BTW, Kris Kobach, who ran Trump's Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity and equested every state turn over voter data to them, lost his bid for the Republican candidate for the open Kansas Senate seat. Kobach also claimed over 3 million non-Americans voted in New England states.

Listening to a NYT pod, they reported that Utah is very experienced at mail-in voting and have been able to run it smoothly. States, like Georgia; are the opposite. The challenge has been when running both live in-person voting simultaneously with mail-in voting is quite the undertaking. They noted it was like running two elections.

I’ve never had a problem physically getting to the polls so I’m unfamiliar w/ “mail-in ballots”. I’m sure it could be done efficiently but I lose confidence if they’re throwing it together in just the past six months & the USPS is involved.

I have friends & colleagues who have to do absentee voting a lot when they’re out of town for work, etc. When it was explained to me, it sounded pretty secure & turnkey for the voter. Why not offer that in lieu of mail-in voting? Just curious...it may be impossible logistically

Biden and the DNC seem to enjoy the Mail in voting option. Why! It's very obvious the guy has issues and has a hard time speaking.

I am an outsider looking in and I'm confused. https://justthenews.com/politics-po...travel-milwaukee-accept-democratic-nomination

If he Is that worried about a virus that he gets tested for and results within 20 minutes,, and everyone gets tested and temperature checks before they enter... PLUS, they wear masks.... No Brainer.

What's the issue?

If they do antibody tests, they get results in a few minutes.

House Incumbents losing in the primaries

House Incumbents losing in the primaries

So far, four Republicans and three Democrats have lost re-election in their primaries.

Steve King, (R, Iowa, 4th District - known for his extreme right views and outrageous statements, which were described as "disgusting" and for which he was stripped of his Committee memberships by his Party. King asked when the term "white supremacist" became bad (The House passed a resolution condemning it and white nationalism" and "white supremacists", has opposed rape and incest as a reason for abortion rape saying "would there be any population left?" He's represented his district for eighteen years.

Steve Watkins (R, Kansas 2nd District) - Charged with four felonies related to election and voter fraud. The residence he listed turned out to be a UPS Box. He has two condos in Alaska and applied 11 times between 2002 and 2015 for the Alaska Permanent Fund dividend which is givven to long-term residents He does not have a residence in Kansas, but said Kansas “was always home in my heart." and has been criticized by local GOP for lack of presence in his district. His dad set a PAC to fund his campaign, largely through his personal donations - a campaign finance violation that is being investigated by the FEC. Watkins is a graduate of West Point with degrees from MIT and Harvard. Really, committing voter fraud in Kansas no less!

Scott Tipton (R, Colorado 3rd) - beaten by a bar owner who advocates QAnon philosophies. QAnon is classified as a terorist organization by the FBI. Tioton was Vice Chair of the Congressional Western Caucus and served on four House Committees. His District is very Republican and the bar owner should be elected to Congress.

Denver Riggleman (R, Virginia District 5) - Conservative, but party was upset he officiated a marriage of two friends who are same sex couple. He was not chosen as the candidate in Virginia's party convention. Riggleman is an Air Force veteran and has been CEO of small businesses including several defense contracting companies. Riggleman was posted to the National Security Agency in 2003, and co-founded Analyst Warehouse LLC (AWL) to provide intelligence consulting to the NSA, Services and other government agencies

Democrats later.

I'm not sure why? If I can do banking and my taxes and everything else through my phone/computer why can't we register with our SS# in order to vote?
I understand there are some logistical problems but It's our democracy at stake.

Yeah conceptually it should make sense. But there's a lot of concerns over it - https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cs...so-why-are-some-governments-using-it.amp.html

If you thought identification issues with mail-in voting are tough to verify....
