That 2016 Notre Dame team may as well have been from 100 years ago, because there is no way in hell this team is losing to to Duke.

It’s more about when we play them. They’ll be coming off a bye while we will have just play scUM. Should we beat scUM, the team has to guard against overlooking Duke. Remember Virginia overlooked Old Dominion & Pitt over Delaware. Should they lose to scUM, they risk going into Duke thinking their season is over.

VT is Nov 2, the week after scUM. We play in Durham on the 9th.

It's crazy to see how this schedule... that absolutely looked like murder's row a few years back when it was first announced... has morphed into something very manageable.

This schedule scared and frustrated the hell out of me when it was first announced but yeah... I'm looking at it now like:

I think we have 3 games left that are easily losable - USC, Michigan, Duke. As we saw with UNC vs Clemson and so many other games, you can really lose (or almost lose) to anyone. But those three games all pose unique challenges...
-USC has immense talent at WR and beat a quality Utah team. They also have the athletes on defense to take risks and possibly get lucky. Their quarterback situation is hot and cold... they will likely have Slovis back from concussion for our game against them. And anything can happen in a rivalry game.
-Michigan should be MUCH better on offense than they are, and it's possible that they continue to progress as the year goes on. Their defense is good enough to thwart our offense the way they're currently playing.
-Duke is sneaky good, and we play them on the road after their bye week. They will likely be ranked in that game, and are extremely well coached with an offense that is starting to click after misfiring in week 1 against Bama.

Frankly, ND should not lose any of the other games unless they totally melt down. Bowling Green we are a 6 TD favorite, Virginia Tech is imploding, Navy is Navy, BC often plays us tough but has looked especially mediocre this year, and Stanford is on their way to a 5 or 6 loss season. It's crazy to see how this schedule... that absolutely looked like murder's row a few years back when it was first announced... has morphed into something very manageable.

I’ve watched USC a couple of times. Utah beat themselves IMO. Trojans are very undisciplined and take too many risks. You can get away with that against lesser teams but not against a team like ND.

Or you get really lucky and it works. What I worry about in that game is an offensive implosion against an athletic group of players. Not saying USC should be favored or is likely to beat ND, I just can conceive of a lot of ways ND blows that game... mainly their WRs making insane plays and their defense causing havoc.

That's essentially what happened on two of those TD passes. Having talented WR's certainly helps but wow were those balls played poorly by the DB's. That might've been the worst I've ever seen DB's play the ball in the air and the luckiest a QB could get. Finke was heaving balls into coverage with DB's falling down or missing the ball. He threw 2 literal jump balls (almost hail marry-ish) with double coverage and the WR came down with it. Now, those WR's are talented but that isn't happening against a good secondary. Those weren't Fromm back shoulder throws to Cage where you tip your cap. Those are plays that make you throw your cap on the floor.

You have the schedule a little mixed up, but I get your point. I'm saying the culture of this team is drastically different than that of 3 years ago. Hence I am not concerned with Duke sneaking up on us.

Yep. USC will score some. They’re too talented not to. We’ll need to execute on offense, and bring it on D. I suspect we will in a night game at home against the big rival and all. But it’s a win we’ll need to earn. Glad it’s at home and relatively early in the season.

And you know our WRs aren't getting any separation against USC. Can we really rely on Tony Jones to beat USC?

We'll see. We know Ian Shook will likely be a mess.

Stellar point since he only threw for 352 and two TD’s last year. Completely agree that Book has looked off but let’s not act like their secondary is lock down and that we haven’t moved the ball through the air against them.

True, but IMO luck tends to fall the way of the better prepared teams. USC also gets a lot of penalties. The games I saw they were the kings of personal fouls. Playing in a rivalry game I would imagine their emotions will be ratcheted up which could lead to more PF's.

They do have great receivers, but if our DE's get pressure on the QB, that should negate that.

Getting to the party a little late... was dealing with close to 3' of snow in SW Alberta and finally got back to the city late yesterday afternoon. I'm getting too old for this B.S.!!

The first half was meh... not scary but rather frustrating. We couldn't seem to find the rhythm and Virginia was executing really well.

The second half was when we seemed to come together. Really pleased with the D. They were a threat at every position. O played well and it was a great relief to see some production from the running backs as well as a good day for the O-line.

All in all, moving forward, I am excited for our progress as a team. I can only believe that Book is gaining confidence with every game and hope the gas tanks is registering "full" this week.

Cheers and Go Irish!!

You may be correct. I spent most of late Friday night/early Saturday morning in my wall tent. When the stove pipe came down at 3:07 a.m. due to the snow and wind, flooding the tent with a thick smoke, I retreated back to the cabin. The storm was absolutely crazy!! Two days earlier I was in shorts and sandals.

Cheers and Go Irish!!

My mistake. You’re right i got those games mixed up. Rdu pointed out the same thing. Thx to both of you for catching that.
