I've never felt more confident Bilal would leave the Oklahoma drill SHOOK if he went against me. He probably just slowly falls forward with his head down and never gets a hand on me.

SHOOK.

Would Koon make his own ‘Koon’s Bod Squad’? My column...

I was in the middle of a brutal 39 round IDP fantasy draft, so hard for me to go into too much detail until I re-watch.

Way late to the game here but:

- Need tp hit and wrap on defense...tackling atrocious
- Oline looked good at times and passive at others...Need Q's intensity
- Bilial wouldn't hit water if he jumped out of a boat...poor hips...nothing new
- Book kept fighting...at times he had happy feet (hangover from Clemson)
- Mobile QB fvcked us up...D-Line not getting off blocks...AKA Weis era defense
- Tightened up in second half...which was good
- never "felt" like we were winning
- Young guys did great...will pay huge dividends as the season wears on.
- road win...NEXT!

Good:

- The run game. When UL couldn't stack the box, ND ran at will and dominated up front. The OL was excellent and Jones/Smith were absolute battering rams. Hopefully Jafar's injury isn't serious.

- Tommy Tremble is going to be a weapon. Big body with that kind of speed and catching ability.

- Impressed with the defensive tackles, especially MTA. He was in the backfield quite often. A reason why UL wasn't even touching the interior was because he was winning up front consistently.

- Kyle Hamilton...more of him please.

- Special Teams. Yeah, hard to believe Special Teams was the most consistent phase of the game.

Meh:

- Wide Receivers. Where were they for most of the game? I don't recall anybody getting open deep whenever a replay occurred.

- Defensive ends. Was disappointed with Okwara especially. A lot of great play from the defensive tackles was nullified by ridiculously sloppy and undisciplined football from him and Kareem for much of the 1st half. You two are captains and upperclassmen vying for early round picks. PLAY LIKE IT.

- Elliott, Pride and Gilman. Speaking of captains who didn't play like it. It's not as if they were bad. Gilman started out poorly but came around to have a decent game, but you have to set the tone. Elliott was just...there it seemed like. Pride needs to be more physical, period.

Bad:

- Ian Book. Where was all that progress made over the offseason to maintain composure in the pocket? Where was it? Because it damn sure wasn't on the field. It was like watching one of those cheap bail bonds commercials that they play during re-runs of Maury. "BAIL-OUT! BAIL-OUT! BAIL-OUT!!!" A part of me wanted to nail his cleats to the ground so he would stop leaving the goddamn pocket. It was infuriating. And it's not like the pressure was ridiculous. The pass protection was solid for the most part, but he just continued to bail for no reason.

- Chris Finke. Paging Mr Finke. Mr Finke, you're presence is requested at Cardinal Stadium. Yet another captain who did not step up when his team needed a jolt. I'm just flabbergasted by the near universal lack of urgency and initiative from the leaders on this team.

- Asmar Bilal. No player on that field last night had anywhere close to a worse game than Asmar Bilal. I take no pleasure in typing that he was beyond atrocious every time he stepped on the field. I really cannot recall a LB being so horrible. Sure, there's been bad LB groups, but Bilal single-handedly brought down the level of play of the LB corp when he was in. Sure, the other guys like White, Owusu and Simon didn't have great games, and they missed their fair share of assignments or tackles, but they also made up for it by improving as the game went on and making plays. Bilal did not. He would go in, commence being glued to blockers, making incorrect read, or whiffing on a simple tackle, then come out, return and do the same exact thing. I think it's safe to say Bilal should not see the field again outside of garbage time. He was a complete disaster.

They played bad lasts night don’t get me wrong but I think we need to pump the breaks a little. Like NDMIA said a good amount of teams played bad. It’s the first game we will make adjustments

With the bad tackling it was anticipate to an extent. I think I remember hearing the coaches mention that it is hard to know where you are at with tackling just from months of practice. Now with 2 weeks mini camp they should head back to Culver academy for 3 or 4 days and get back to the fundamentals.

With Bilal and Finke maybe they spent the entire pre season practicing against one another 10 or 15 metres away from everyone else. If so, assignment successful.

Maybe Bilal was just the one who paid the price for the slightly strange offence that Lville ran. Wasn't he on the running back most of the time when it ended up being a QB run?

Five takeaways:

1. Thank God it's over.

2. Louisville is not a good team. No way to spin it.

3. Teams have the cliff notes on Book. We may see Jurkovec if he can't find a way to keep defenses reading honestly.

4. Senior leadership needs to develop quickly. No big brother Tranquil anymore.

5. More passion, less corporate. Yes, please score the f-ing ball with three plus minutes on the clock, Kelly.

Bonus perspective: Ball St. and Vanderbilt were embarrassing early games last season also.

Anything is possible.

Watched the game again. Gotta get a few things together. Good players that need to come together as a team. At this level tackling is innate. Gotta work on that. Hopefully, as suggested, Book is close to his offense. That will buy him the confidence I think he needs.Too many good players to skew hope this early in the season.

Cheers and Go Irish!!

Good and Bad about the game -

Good:
Irish Won
Book no INTs / 2 TDs - 1 Rushing/1 Passing

RBs No Fumbles / 3 TDs
Defense played very well after HT adjustments
Offense scored a TD in each qtr

Bad:
Ran out of beer before end of game - started too late
Missed the spread by 3 points (damn second half FG)
Neighbor wouldn't shut up about Vols loss while watching the game
Other neighbor overcooked the wings

There's never an excuse to run out of beer or liquor.

Say what you want about Book’s performance, but I was very impressed with the pass he completed to the cheerleader’s face. Pinpoint accuracy.

What about the following play when he slammed into the back of some female L'ville assistant? She was metoo'd

Should have hit her in the chest. Any swelling caused by the impact would've been welcomed.

You would feel a bit unlucky getting hit seeing as Book wasn't hitting anything all night.

As a gesture she should be offered a scholarship. Get her on the Irish sidelines.

Is anyone else concerned that Book's nylon arm sleeve may be contributing to his ball security/ fumbles? He was carrying the ball in the arm with the sleeve both times he coughed it up last night. The fumble he ran into the tight end, in particular, looked like it came out too easily. Those sleeves can't be good for ball security, right?

This was one of the most meh games I've seen. We weren't terrible, we weren't great. New Mexico should be a 3+ TD win, so it'll still be until Georgia to see if we're any good.

Maybe, but I noticed he doesn't switch arms when he runs and can leave it somewhat exposed.

Was at the game. Most of this was probably already stated but I need to get back to work.

1. First game of the year, Who was expecting perfection?
2. New coach was going to have them playing better than last year. To expect them to roll over is foolish.
3. Team got things corrected and won like they should have.
4. Irish Nation was strong. Card fans booed when Irish faithful started chanting.
5. Attendance recorded as a record 58K. Lots of empty seats on the UoL side. Thank God ND showed up or the stadium would have been half empty.
6. Koon would have been disappointed as most of the Irish faithful appeared to show up in blue.
7. Need to work on tackling, but I contribute some of that to some of the youth being a little too excited.
8. Rotation of the LB's tells me that during camp, the staff couldn't tell who really gets it. Wouldn't be surprised to see Bilal start against NW and get pulled early.

Observations from the stands:

-This was my third Irish road game. I went to the NC State and Navy games in 2016. Once Louisville took a 14-7 lead, I thought I was a curse.

-I don't know what a loud road crowd sounds like. Louisville fans weren't as loud as a Notre Dame game at night, but I thought the crowd noise was decent. I'm sure it still didn't compare to Miami, VT, or Clemson though.

Offense:

They played the way I expected they would. I wasn't surprised at all they had a slow first half. Opening up with a true road game could do that. I definitely thought Book would look to be more in command. He was not good in the first half, but was much better in the second half. Converted some big third downs in the 4th quarter.

Running game has to be better, it has has to. I know we racked up 250 yards on the ground. I'm looking at it from a situational standpoint. If it's 3rd and 1, we should be able to get a yard with Jones or Smith. I know Long didn't show too much though. PA boot legs to the TE in the flat will be coming soon.

I loved what I saw from Tremble. He didn't light up the stat sheet, but he just made plays when someone needed to make one. Both Book and Tremble looked good on the TD pass.

Defense:

The run defense will get better when the linebackers get more experience and fill the run gaps consistently. There were missed tackles, but it was week 1.

I thought UL did a good job mitigating the pass rush. It seemed like there were a lot of quick throws. Kareem and Okwara seemed to not have a lot of opportunities to cash in.

The secondary did a great job against a solid group of receivers.

I was really impressed by Hamilton, JOK, and White. All new faces to this defense and I thought they proved that they're ready for big time CFB.

Bilal is an IN player and it is so very, very rare that a player from IN is worth two shakes of a flip. Day and Smith being the exceptions.

But not wanting to get into a pissing match with you guys from IN. Hey, I grew up there too btw.

Here's some exceptions off the top of my head.

J Smith
