Crus, big individual matchup in the NIC tomorrow. Hunter Whitenack will be going up against Rodney McGraw. If New Prairie can beat Elkhart Central, they’ll win the NIC North outright.

I think the MIC is down this year. Avon may be the next 6A champ.

Good old Avon. 20 years ago those fools ended my football playing days with a 10 - 7 victory. My senior year we were number #1 and our sectional was brutal. We had to beat #8 in the first round, then #2 and eventually lost to #4 Avon in the Sect. Champ game....still pisses me off to this day as I transferred to that HS chasing the ring. To add salt to the wound...our girls won state in both volleyball and softball that year.

Back to 2019 - Avon has a tough draw in playing Brownsburg first game. During the regular season, Avon won that match-up 7-3 and all signs point towards another close game. Should be fun to watch.

Avon went down to Brownsburg last night. Another great 3 point game. The bulldogs had a scoop and score that proved to be the difference. 6A is wide open this year

Four region teams with a chance at semi-state tonight.
6A Merrillville is at home against Warsaw
5A Valparaiso on the road against Mishawaka
4A Hobart at home against New Prairie
2A Andrean at home against Lewis Cass

Merrillville and Valpo look like favorites to win. Valpo probably has the best shot to win a state title, despite having to play Cathedral or New Palestine at some point. They may have four or five D1 players in the trenches. Hobart is probably a dog but they're at home, only two losses were to 6A teams, they've won ten straight with four shut outs in the last six games. Andrean has an uphill battle against #1 Lewis Cass but they're at home and only losses this year were to quality opponents in higher class - 6A Merrillville, 4A Hobart and 4A New Prairie.

The Cathedral / New Pal game is the highlight of the tournament this weekend IMO.

Valpo absolutely dominated Mishawaka last night in a regional matchup, 49-0. I think this shows how good Valpo is because Mishawaka is pretty good themselves. I know Valpo has that d-end that Notre Dame has been interested in. I knew Valpo was good, but wow. They take on Bishop Dwenger next week.

Marian, without their starting QB and RB, are going to semi state after beating Knox 17-0. Knox is kind of a fraud, they find their success by beating smaller schools that inflate their win totals. Marian does have a great defense though; their defense is ranked #4 out of all classes in points allowed per game at just over 7. They host Bishop Chatard next week.

New Prairie’s run ended last night. Hobart beat them 36-7. Hobart must be really good because I didn’t think NP was gonna go out like that.

My cousin's two boys start for Cathedral. So sad for them. One of them had a huge game last week, and they were all pumped for last night.

Gooooooo Chatard. Or Shitard like we called them in the 80s. I cheer for all the Indy Catholic schools now.

Hobart was the gold standard for Indiana high school football in the late 80s-early 90s, and were an absolute juggernaut for close to 30 years, before taking a downturn when Don Howell retired.

My favorite game in high school was playing them in the Brickie Bowl in 1995. We were both undefeated, and it was the most hyped Region football game ever. Place was an absolute zoo. Stands were already full and raucous as hell when our bus got to the field. We won 43-7, and went to state that year. Such a great moment.

There’s analytics rankings for high school football teams and Marian is ranked in the 30’s and Chatard is #6. I think it’s going to be a long night for my Alma Mater

Any Ohio people on the board will know there’s a huge D2 playoff game this upcoming week between Archbishop Hoban vs. Massillon Washington. It’s a rematch of last years D2 state championship game. Holy Cross school, Hoban is 4x defending state champ and Massillon is a 24x AP poll state champions and 9x national champions. This game has talent on both sides of the ball. Hoban lost Bama commit Clark to a knee injury and hopefully Arizona State recruit, Traynum will be back at RB and LB for this game. ND has had interest in Hoban LB Ollison and would like them to take a look at DE Peterson. Massillon has 5* WR OSU commit and their QB is committed to Kent State for baseball. Game should draw a huge crowd from surrounding NE Ohio.

Opposite of Jones at DE is a kid named Dingman who gets after it and will probably play at a small D1 school. They have two quality HS defensive tackles and Jones little brother, who will probably be a D1 caliber player, gets some tick as a backup. They have senior linebackers who are smart, especially Krutz. I played for his old man in high school and the entire family has a high football IQ, including this kid.

They have two big high school offensive tackles - Hofer is one and he will go D1 and the other probably will as well. The rest of the line is big and good. They have two guys that can make plays out of the backfield and a good QB. They could give New Palestine a game if both make it to the state final.

Loved playing at the Brickie bowl with that fucking train going by every fifteen minutes. Good times. Hobart's current coach, Craig Osika, played there in the late 90s and he was a good one. I could be wrong but it seemed like Hobart was one of the first programs in the region to push weight lifting and off season conditioning. I remember pulling up in our school bus to play them freshman year and their varsity team was lifting in this hell hole of a garage right next to the bowl. Looked like a prison yard. We were kinda intimated but after kickoff it became apparent that half of their freshman team just got their first pubes over the summer and we beat them by fifty or so.

They had a track coach named Jim Johnston who played a big role in building their strength and conditioning program. That's my understanding, at least. His son coached me in high school and he was just an elite coach that has produced a boat load of talent. I never worked much with his father but I heard he was even better - they were both old school in some ways but ahead of their time in others, if that makes sense.

The big rumor back in the day was a lot of their players used PEDS.

It is no rumor there was a little gym in downtown Hobart called Jim McGees Health Spa, that had members (not the McGees, not slandering them) with PEDS for people looking to score some.

I noticed quite a bit of bacne tbh.

I heard the same, and I would be shocked if it wasn't true.

A few thoughts...

Our AD at MC Rogers was Dave Parry. Former Dean of Big Ten officials and before that an NFL official. (His son is Dave Parry the retired NFL official that does the rules interp for MNF) Anyways, he must have hated our football coach because TWICE he scheduled Hobart for Homecoming. LOL. Nothing like losing 56-0 on homecoming.

I kinda sorta dated the daughter of Coach Howell's assistant. I thought it was possibly exclusive on her part. lol. Turns out, she dated Ted Karras Jr. also. I heard that it might not be in my best interest to continue doing so. Nothing ever came of it and sooner or later girlfriend #1 found out and that was that besides a few circle backs.

An ULTRA rare Hobart basketball story. My senior year, We're 13-0, ranked #1 in Indiana and #5 in USAToday. We're averaging 90 something (with no 3 for u youngsters) and roll into Hobart, 3 starters have the $hit ur shorts during the game kinda flu. We escape with a 61-60 OT win vs the worst team in the DAC. Closest game we had until Game #29. :-( For our troubles, we get the Brickie treatment. They busted out 3 or 4 windows with bricks on the way out of the parking lot. That's so Region!

New Pal and Valpo tonight at 7 from Lucas Oil. My guess is New Pal roles by at least 3 TDs.

10s at half. Valpo gets the ball to start the third. It’s not looking like NP’s QB is coming back.

NP 27 Valpo 20. Valpo’s comeback attempt came just short. NP had a huge pick 6 at the end of the third that was the difference. Spegal capped his HOF career with about 140 or so yards highlighted by his 80 yard TD run.

1A has a great game. Lafayette CC scored on the last play to make it 28 to 27. Went for two instead of OT and got it - 29 to 28 over Lutheran.

Chatard ran away with 3A to the tune of 34 to 3. Their 14th title which is the state’s most - 2 more now than Cathedral.
